Please forgive me if this post isn't appropriate here...

I just completed a short-subject documentary about the art and science behind maintaining pianos for artists. This group was one of the inspirations behind my making the film. It is called "Piano Man". You may view it at this link:

Hope you enjoy!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for this! I LOVED YOUR FILM! Next to my immediate family, the most important person in my life is my piano tuner(s). Actually, the tuner in your film so reminded me of my tuner - his attention, patience, commitment, and downright love of the instrument. He knows my passion for my piano and love of it - and he takes care of it like it is a soul - to me it is. Loved the cinematography in your film and the playing at the end. I take it that piece was improvised by the pianist - very "Chick Corea" in style. I wish you success with this!

Thank you, again.

Beautiful! Your video reminds me what an art caring for a piano is. there really should be a piano tech appreciation day. Thanks so much for the insightful, professional production

Beautiful -- and you give it away for free on Vimeo. Could you get a grant, expand it to an hour, and get it on PBS?

Thanks for all the kind words, everybody. The project was a labor of love. I got to know Nevin when he started working on my piano a few years ago. I was fascinated by his personality and the way he worked. I thought it would make an interesting movie.

Beautiful film, Phil. Thank you for sharing it with us. Certainly deserves to be widely viewed.

Thanks also for the glimpse into the inside of the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. A former colleague of mine was the founding executive director of the Schermerhorn and was involved in its design. I've heard that the acoustics are exceptional.

I really enjoyed that! Thank you!

One minor thing I noticed is that at the very end when the credits are rolling it seemed as though the notes/sound wasn't in sync with the video. Not sure if it's an easy fix, whether it's just my computer, whether it's a Vimeo thing. Certainly doesn't take away from the great video - just thought I'd let you know.

Wow. Great perspective from someone who is an artist in his own right. I love it when a person has such passion for what he is doing.

Can you ask Nevin a question for me? At 9:25, he says that over time the upward strike of the hammers pulls the strings up from the bridge pins and he likes to tap the strings back down. Is the faulty sound he is try to fix false beats?

Thanks a lot! That was indeed inspiring. I enjoyed the sound and camera!

My favourite quote from the movie was:

Quote
If a piano isn’t inspiring, what‘s it doing there?

Many others as well, like
Quote

A great piano can sound lousy, if it is not well serviced.

A bad instrument can stop anybody from learning to play, a great instrument; inspires people to play.

So you did this in 15 minutes? I would like to hear what you could do in 20.

There are more things wrong with a new piano than any other.

We have pianos because they provide us with emotional experiences.

John, seating the strings is done to improve tone clarity, and yes, sometimes to reduce false beats or buzzing noises. Obviously I have no idea why he was seating those strings in this particular case, but does it matter?
