I'm thinking of putting a steel flat file cabinet under my piano to get it out of the way, but am concerted that it will affect the tone. Thoughts?

Try it and see...

Worse case scenario, if you notice some difference in tone, or buzzes and rattles, you'll know it was not a good idea. There is a lot of empty space under the belly of a grand piano, but now that you mention it, I don't usually see things stored underneath the belly of a grand.

Good luck.

I have an exercise ball stored underneath my piano. I haven't noticed any change in the tone, but it's mostly air.

My money is on some rattling. Kind of like loud speakers in a room!

I'm thinking there will be some notes on the piano that will cause some buzzing to come out of the filing cabinet -- maybe more than one. I bought my son a cajon (type of rhythm drum) for Christmas. It has copper string snares in it and the rattle to the A3 & A4.

Now is really the time for storage inside the piano.

I think try it and see is a good approach.
Resonance with the file cabinet would also depend on what gauge steel the cabinet was made of.
Some these things were manufactured with industrial use in mind and can be quite substantial...

Try something big under it and see for yourself before you put money into that file cabinet. How big is the room?
