I attended a solo piano concert last night in a medium size church. The piano on which I have heard 4 other good performances, was a Schaefer 6' grand. A nice piano, not spectacular, a little undersized for the space, made here in California in small quantities for about 30 years.
I was immediately struck with how the dynamic range had increased! I thought it must have been regulated by a new tech since I last heard it. It hadn't been. The dramatic increase was entirely attributed to the pianist's skilled artistic technique. Her range of ppp to mf was enormous, and the previous 4 pianists I have heard on this same piano were certainty no slouches. (Her use of the una corda pedal was also very instructional.)
I know this is obvious, but you can work letoff, after touch etc to a concert level of response, but if the pianist can't take advantage of it............

I’m pretty sure that piano was a Korean Samick stencil, not made in California. But I’m happy to hear the pianist could coax a nice dynamic range and good sound out of it.

The artist is more important than the piano. Much as I would like to flatter myself about the importance of my own skills, this truth is made amply obvious year after year.

This was vividly brought home to me a few years ago at a combined male voice choir concert in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

The accompanist for the choirs had been doing a solid job, on the Steinway D. And then a guest pianist and his soprano wife were to come on and do a bit each. I had been perusing the printed program while stage hands rearranged the stage a little. And then he started to play. I looked up and suddenly thought Oh - they've wheeled on a different D while I wasn't looking - it sounds much mellower and more subtle! Very very different. But they hadn't. It wasn't the piano, it was the player.
