I was living in Japan when I joined PW (I had been living in Japan when I first took up piano), and I chose ShiroKuro because of the piano keyboard -- means literally"WhiteBlack" and in Japanese, rather than saying "black and white" (like B&W TV etc.) we say "white-black." So, not all that creative, but I now use this name for all of my piano-related online activities.

At the time I joined PW, I had already used an online moniker starting with a number (how many kids I have), followed by a word found in the Bible that is another name for one's offspring. However, I wanted a musical name for this forum, so started paging through my Harvard Concise Dictionary of Music and found the term andamento, which I'd never heard of before. It refers to a longer fugal theme, and, like fugues, which contain multiple subjects weaved throughout the work, I thought the term reflected the various musical themes that run through my life. (I enjoy teaching, performing, and composing.)

I see that andamento is also an artistic term indicating the visual flow and direction within a mosaic. I'm not at all skilled with visual arts, but have always enjoyed the connections between visual and musical arts; for example, Impressionism as displayed in Monet's watercolors and works like Debussy's Reflections in the Water.

So when I registered here last December, Andamento it was. smile

That's interesting. In the visual arts there's a very similar word that originated in the Renaissance: chiaroscuro - chiaro = clear or light and scuro = dark or obscure

It should be obvious, but I'll explain anyway…

Ce-Fi- are the first two letters of my first and last names, except that one letter is changed. "Now" is a homonym of "Nau" short for "Nauru." For some reason I was thinking of the plight of that unfortunate, plundered island nation, when thinking up a username… and "now" is catchier than "then" anyway. Cefi-then?

Whew… That wasn't as hard as I thought!

When I joined this forum my playing sounded like I was all thumbs. Since then it has improved a bit so maybe I could change my name to something like: Fingers1and2

I have 3 grown children, which, of course, is where the" mom3" comes from. I did not put a number after "gram" because the number of grandchildren kept changing. It's up to 11 as of now.

With all the new people showing up for the recital, I thought I'd bring this to the top, see if we have some more people who would like to share!

Oh, why not!

Mine is simple, yet a little weird.
It is simply a nickname that gives me a childhood friend (we are still very good friend today and she still calls me that way very often). I start using it on the internet very early on, since there is no way someone would take this name on any given forum, game, or so on. It is always an available.

This nickname is really something that came up from her without any explanation other that she has a big imagination, and we must have been about 9 years old when she started calling me that way.
It is mostly a (big) deformation of my real name (which is Josée). She always says it with a happy voice, so there is really a good feeling associated with this name, that she is the only one to call me in real life.
The «J» is pronounce like in «John». So it is like «djwee-she» («oui» is pronounced like the «wii» console).

My piano journey from day 1
Started piano on February 2016.
Pieces I'm working on :
- Rameau, Les Sauvages
- (Classical piece TBD)
- Chopin, nocturne op. posth. in C# minor
- Debussy, Golliwog's cakewalk
- Pozzoli, E.R. 427, etude no. 6

I love it, djwii-she! Now that I know how to pronounce it properly, I can read your posts with a little more...accuracy...no that's not the proper word...humanity? ! It's funny, sometimes I meet people even in real life and see their names in writing but never actually say them, and it's a little sad to not be able to pronounce them. So I'm glad I can associate yours with the proper pronunciation.

My username (Dr. Rogers) is self-explanatory. Not very creative, I know.

But I should point out that I'm a PhD, not an MD. I've read different opinions from etiquette experts as to whether or not PhDs should be called Dr., and I've known one to switch from "no" to "yes" upon further consideration. But I worked bloody hard for that Post Hole Digger, so I intend to use it! Professor is a more polite form of address, but I feel it would be a little too gauche to call myself Professor Rogers.

The Dr. also helps (or rather helped in the past) distinguish me from my father, who was also a teacher and went by Mr. Rogers. Sadly, my father is now of blessed memory.

Dr Rogers, I find that most MD's do not refer to themselves as doctor, but most others with a doctorate do (eg dentists, PhD's, etc.). My take is that a PhD is a doctorate in the classic sense, an achievement of a high level of proficiency in a field above that of a BS, BA, or even masters level degree and I know these things aren't given out willy nilly; I'm sure you worked hard for and deserve that title.

I love these posts! I wish there was a "like" feature like facebook ;-). My Username is self explanatory and not creative at all. Unlike many of the names that I see on PW which are very creative.

10 years ago, I was looking for a piano teacher for my kids when I came upon this forum. I was only joining to ask a few questions about piano teachers, so my name is MomOfBeginners. I didn't think I'd still be reading this forum 10 years later, and my kids are no longer beginners, but I'm not changing names.

I am boring, just my first name with a "." after it. Mike. was taken so I went a little more formal.

What an interesting thread that I thought I'd pitch in. So, mine is 'lyricmudra'.

'Lyric' is a song that is played with a lyre, while 'mudra' is a gesture (using hands and fingers) to express inner thoughts and feelings, or to tell stories in dance. They are prominent in Hindu and Buddhist art. Here is a link on what 'mudras' are:

https://www.yogajournal.com.au/2017/06/28/mudras-2/

By combining ‘lyric’ and ‘mudra’ (much like ‘Lyric Opera’ in Lyric Opera of Chicago), I thought I’d be referring to all our aspirations of being able to ‘sing’ and express ourselves through gestures of hand and fingers when playing the piano. :-)
