I was at a Kawai dealer today to purchase a K-500 and was offered a GL10 for about $1000 more. Both were offered for a very good price. I tried them both and liked both, although I felt the sound of the K-500 was warmer and more full. I do not have a lot of room, but can fit the GL10 which is 5 foot. Would a 5 foot grand be more desirable in general than a 51 inch upright.

I prefer most K-500s over most GL10s I've tried, but pianos are individuals, and some come out better than others (and more importantly, some are prepped better than others). Some prefer the look of a small grand, but I like the fuller, more balanced tone of newer, good quality tall uprights. Others will probably disagree...

As the owner of a new K-500 myself, I'm still getting used to the sound and feel of this particular instrument in comparison to my 2003 7 foot Mason and Hamlin grand and Kawai CA65 digital. smile

The K-500 is Kawai's "almost" top of the line upright (the larger K-800 being the flagship model) while the GL10 is Kawai's base model baby grand. I would assume that you can tell a difference between the upright action and grand action - which could also be a factor in your decision. And, for all its worth, even though both models have much the same basic features, the K-500 is built in Japan while the GL 10 is built in Indonesia.

If you haven't read Larry Fine's latest write up on Kawai, here it is....

And his ratings.......

we've read right here on the forum one of the ironic facts of piano life, that many grands sound better almost anywhere in the room except adjacent to and facing the music desk. with most tall uprights placed with a wall behind it, the player does not have the same 'handicap'. as far as the advantages of the grand action vs. verticals, the variation in both genres is such that more than a few grands don't really have actions that respond better or have more touch feed back than high quality uprights. upper tier verticals can often be better values than smaller, entry or moderate level grands, but some consumers are attached to the notion of owning and playing a grand piano or get more satisfaction from seeing one in their residence, and their opinion is the one that counts.

I’m being offered the K-500 for $7,300 with delivery and the first tuning. Would you consider that to be a very good price or average.

That's 57% of the SMP ($12,790) and 50% of MSRP ($14,695) - so yes, $7,300 (including delivery and tuning) is an EXCELLENT price.

I paid $8K for mine a few weeks ago (without delivery). At 62% of SMP I thought that was a very good price. I didn't feel I paid too much, nor did I want to invest more than $8K in a new upright. Certainly could have paid less for a similarly sized new Chinese built instrument - but didn't want to go that route.

Of course, this also means that you can get the GL 10 for around $8,300 - correct? That's 58% of SMP ($14,190) or 55% of MSRP ($15,095). Also an excellent deal.

I'm assuming you are looking at the basic ebony satin or ebony polish finishes on each instrument.

Yes both are the polished ebony. Both obviously a good deal then. I decided to go with the K-500.

An adjustable bench with a tufted, black vinyl cover.
