With some ABF regulars wondering if an online recital would be possible, it gets me thinking about the feasibility of an online piano party. The idea has been tossed around a little before. My idea would be to pick a date, preferably a weekend in about a month, to host a live streaming event. It would be informal; participants can play one piece, up to 5-10 minutes depending on number of participants, or just watch. You can reprise a prior recital piece ( which would be presumably polished) or try something new; restarts allowed, etc.

We could try to find a time when ppl from several time zones would be awake; as an example, 4 pm EST(FL, NY), it would be 1 pm PST (California), 9 pm GMT (London), 10 pm CET (Italy), 8 am AEDT (Sidney). That covers a great deal of this forum.

I believe video conferencing software exists that would make this possible....if we could pull it off, it might be epic!

Feasible? Interest?

It sounds like fun. Though I am not sure how it would work. Skype?
I don’t know how many people from Italy/France/CET zone would participate- it’s not that we wouldn’t be up at that hour, but rather that we mostly live in apartments and you can’t really play piano at that hour.

I do / can play late in the evening but I use the Silent feature and turn the volume down low or use headphones.
I know it’s tricky to accommodate everyone- possibly impossible!

Even so, I think it is a great idea!
Worth a try!

I take part in an online advanced performance workshop once a month with my teacher. We have students from all over the world, and it is really fun to meet each other. We use Zoom, and it works quite well. We perform our pieces for each other, as well as technical exercises. She sets up time by GMT, and we have had participants from the US, Canada, Britain, Spain, India, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia. The Workshops are generally 11:00 GMT or 16:00 GMT on Saturday and Sunday. Those times might work for this.

I would definitely participate is a PianoWorld online party!

I think that a "gotomeeting" type program that is free might work.
'Stride previously called "hall" is a one alternative.

[Linked Image]
It is free or paid at $3/mo that allows you to cancel anytime.
Meaning at most you would pay 3 bucks for the online session .
Also it allows unlimited attendees and time duration.

Stride goto

p.s. if you have forelocks for Firefox you can tell what time it would be in any timezone.

Zoom looks good to me (and I would be very interested in participating.) If we were to do this as a regular thing, I would be willing to chip in a month or two for a license to allow longer than 40 minutes. I love my local piano forum, and would love love love and online version!

Could I join you just to watch and see how it all works this time? I'm also in Italy CET. I don't want to commit to playing just yet and besides I'm not even sure that my Internet connection is good enough for that, I am on LTE and if I happen to be in the country that weekend my connection could be weak.

Another idea would be to post a thread asking for video submissions for a few days only and theme it to a country with the above like criteria
"post a video with an intro of 5-10 minutes of the said area with personal information you've had e.g. pictures, places or experiences, even food recipes! and a piano piece of your choice"
Vimeo is now accessible to anyone and also a link-able vid on pianoworld. I assume someone could close the thread too once submissions are done.
--so that's another idea ....
In a big way , it's less expensive and nerve racking than travel.

A live party would be pretty hard to accomplish without very firm limits to time and what to present by the presenter. I think making a ghost account somehow on you-tube and presenting a VIDEO of any duration once every 6 months for players to comment on would suffice and be less confusing. Also, people are able to leave comments on you tube so there’s feedback.
The differences in this and a piano bar or recital would be
the less formal aspect of being able to introduce yourself, or talk about anything piano-wise e.g. like what you use to record, or play a piece you like.

For fun I guess you could theme them too, like swiss alps- requiring green knee knockers (lol), or I don’t know… the Bach era ( in humor wear a wig). Or require a food recipe or work of art or something indigenous to the theme for an intro
For instance, I could imagine maybe someone introducing themselves by a vid making homemade ravoli, then say playing “Ave Maria’ on their piano.
The downside (or maybe upside ) is not being “live”.
Maybe I’m way off course, but it is MHO.

In a way I think the first one should be, if it flies that is "your hometown or area "etc......

Cheers!!!

Very interesting, I would participate. At work, we use Google Hangout for conference and meeting. It's free and works on Mac, Windows and Linux.

I think those are some good thoughts, pianoprimo, I like the idea of a video that's a little more informal...however, I feel like it would create pressure to perfect / polish like in the recitals; my idea is less to polish, but more to just play, hesitations and pauses and all if needed. I personally wouldn't submit a terrible performance to a recital but wouldn't be adverse to playing a partial song or an idea to folks on a live recital.

The google hangouts looks like the best bet yet. I haven't used it - does only one active person speak or does it record everyone simultaneously? Don't want it to be too much of a mess. We could make a list and try to stick with it in order if needed.

For Google Hangout, everyone can talk at the same time like in a conference call or mute their microphone. The participants can choose which camera they want to see. No need for a camera or a microphone, if someone just wants to watch.

From my work experience , one person is the manager of the "hangout" and must share their desktop screen with others to see what is being coordinated, though -other//you - can use a web-cam when playing talking etc , but still, it is one at a time with a manager/coordinator so to speak in managing the meet up..

I'm responding because I like the idea of getting the feel of other areas, and maybe even "getting" others experiences in the process of different cultures , countries and areas- who are pianists. But, honestly I can't see an easy workaround with a "goto" hangout.

MAYBE...A ."post a video" and have a free chat setup contributors. e.g. a chat session lasting a couple hours .[after submitting ], but not a goto..

I'd even be willing to do a sample video of how i would do one submit if it ever would occur.

I'm interested.
U.S., Eastern Standard Time (but I'm not an early riser).

I would still encourage people to host or participate in as many in-person piano gatherings as possible.
There's something about sharing music, food & drink, and conversation (between performances) that enhances the experience.

But I do understand the challenges of putting piano parties together.

Speaking of which, we (Kathy and I) are discussing putting together another European Piano Tour like we did in 2011.
I've been contacted by a few people expressing an interest in participating, more on this later.

I see a few different ideas about the app to use for streaming video/audio live.
I would suggest anyone planning to participate test the apps well ahead of time. Bandwidth and speed will be a factor.

I am not familiar with Google Hangouts, but with Zoom all of the participants can be seen and speak at the same time. One person does have to host the meeting, and they can switch the main screen to the person performing, and everyone is in little screens at the top. The way we get around the 40 minute limit is we simply restart the meeting when it cuts off. That gives you another 40 minutes. There is no lag with Zoom, and it has worked well for the performance workshops I have done. I am quite willing to try Google Hangouts though.

Another option-
I think this might work if a few steps are taken by who'd would want to join.
--it’d still be free, meaning no charge involved and secure!—
FIRST 3 STEPS OPTIONAL
Step 1 [for ease of deleting everything in one step]
First if you don’t have “Firefox” , download it.
From there create a separate profile from default in case you decide you want to delete the whole shebang.
On the desktop, click the properties of the firefox icon and add a “switch”
[Linked Image]
After quotation marks add “-p –no-remote” without quotation marks
Thus when you click on your desktop icon you can add a profile.
[Linked Image]
That’s step 1 completed.

Step 2.
Register for a mail.com account and use your pianoworld “handle” to register the mail.
You don’t need a cell or telephone for this process.
All mail is online.
[Linked Image]
Step 3.
Register with stride free- STRIDE.COM
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
And Login as per instructions given: “check email”… etc…
Once you’re logged in it’ll ask you to join a group.
Choose or type
“Virtual-piano-gather rooms”
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
go to settings and make sure you handle is the same as you pianoworld name, and type “Pianoworld member” for ‘organization”
[Linked Image]
Almost DONE!!!!!
You’re there!
[Linked Image]
You could either 1. chat 2.do videos live or 3.meet with up to 20 people in one room!
But, if that’s not enough add another room or meeting during the session for more people.
That’s all I have …..but I’d like to try this out , for fun anyway!!! Even if it doesn’t work, it was worth a try!
Note to cover all time zones a session would have to be open for a 4 hour period preferably on a weekend, (1pm to 5pm EST) that would cover zones from California, USA-7:00 PDT to Moscow, +3:00 MSK, everyone having at least 2 hours to do “live” video.
You can see how it’d fit the timezones below.
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
at 1 pm EST, USA
it is
9am Calif , USA
5pm London, England
9pm Moscow
SO that was work....who knows I'll probably not make it if it does come about smile

Whew. That’s complicated at first glance!!
I will have some time tomorrow to look into it.
For me, it would gave to be a Saturday as I can’t play my acoustic on Sunday.
Of course if the majority are available on Sunday- go for it.
If I get it going I would love to test it with someone!

I'm willing for a 10 min test run next Saturday, i work nights, so it has to be short. for a test
I'd figure afterwards if a success, I'll post a first virtual piano bar thread, and leave the rest, as far as dates ( like every 6 months?) to who'd ever plan the rest or popular vote.
Still, I'd post one pre recorded vid of something about where I live, a recipe or something akin. that's limited to 5 mins in the thread.
Also note that stride allows you to download the app to an android , so you can have two cams at once.( I Ithink but haven't tried on my smart phone yet.)

Cheers!!!

Great!

What time (your time zone) would work for you?
If I get it working I will pm you to organize.

Pianoprimo - I just got back from a week away. I tried Zoom with my kids and it worked very well, very easy to use. I'm wondering we can start with this? Maybe just get a logon that is the same as our user name here and invite people? I downloaded the app on my iPhone, but will try next to use the computer as the audio and video quality are better.

Next Sat can work for me - how is 11 am EST? That's 8 am PST, 4 pm in London. Can organize and let everyone introduce and play a few minute, possibly in order below, except I'll be happy to go last smile.

We have 11 below. Who's in?? smile

I'm sure Zoom is fine ,but it's too steep for my budget, and frankly would rather pay pianoworld than a video conferencing tool, besdies, at most Stride is 3.99 a month with more features . So that being said I'm out.
Honestly I'veo only used google hangouts and GoTO) both are costly . but either way if you check out Stride .. maybe let me know

Cheers!!!

I am looking at Zoom now, and it is FREE for 100 participants to use for 40 minutes at a time. FREE is not much of a budget buster??

Zoom is free.

It's true, I don't have any special attachment to any platform, but the above steps seemed complicated. Zoom is free for 100 participants. I tried w my kids and it worked. All I had to do was invite them and I installed it on my phone for free. I also set up a user name but the recipients just needed to be invited by phone number or email. You might even be able to log on with a meeting ID.

I'm not against zoom, just not familiar with it- but will check it out.

.....................
Looking at the features Zoom does look pretty good ..like the virtual background feature !

Yet with stride, you can make the initial meeting public then private thereafter if everything works out

Importantly though the original idea was yours , so I'll be happy to test for short period just not on this week end, e.g. Sat or Sun- preferrable after Easter like Monday .

I use Zoom for my lessons and for the the monthly performance workshops I do. It works really well. There is no lag, and the sound quality is pretty good. It is much better than skype. The 40 minute limitation is only for group meetings. For our workshops we just restart a new meeting to make our meeting an hour. I actually have a workshop next weekend at 4 pm GMT, which conflicts with the chosen time. I might be able to join the Sunday workshop instead. I will let you know.

I'd very much be up for this. Zoom is probably the best option (I use this for my coaching; not piano related) - it's a very small download and free up to 40 minutes for groups. If we want to make it longer than that, we need someone with a paid account who can create the meeting.

Apologies if someone has already said that, I haven't read all the previous posts yet, am at work and a little rushed right now.

TL;DR: Count me in!

How's this for structure.

Zoom chat rooms have a 40 minute time limit. Probably good enough for a first time around anyway. I suppose another room can be opened if more time is needed.

Set up phone / computer / ipad etc where we can see you or the keys, can position however you feel best, then chat for a few minutes. After some brief intros, everyone can have a turn playing for a few minutes, say one piece, then if time permits a second round. If you don't have anything "finished", that's okay.....this isn't a recital. Mistakes allowed (even encouraged lol); you can even stop in the middle of a measure and say something like "I'm having a little trouble on this spot". Totally casual.

How's Saturday morning at 11 am EST? I know b#, the only PST that replied, gets up at 5 am anyway! Will be mid afternoon for Sibylle.

Thoughts?

Yes, you can join with an iPhone, iPad or computer. If you use an iPhone or other mobile device, you need to download the (free) Zoom app. Then when the time comes, check here for the meeting ID, which I will provide upon starting the meeting. I am not sure if you need to create a user account, but you might. Either way, it's free.

You can also join from a computer. Go to the Zoom website, click "Join A Meeting", and enter the meeting ID. It will have you download some little app / program and then enter the meeting ID. No signup required.

Yes, it's 6 pm so it s not too late to play the acoustic...I can try but I will probably mess up with all the phone stuff. I have actually never bothered to learn how to use my iphone..especially not the camera smile

And it would have to be without me in the video...I am in my day off look which is not something pleasant...will you accept sound only?

I'm not sure how compatible it will be with some video, some sound; might work. But then, you can just aim the phone at the piano. Hey, I'm no model! I've found I can rest the phone on the far left of the keyboard, standing up on the keyboard soft close arm; maybe you have something similar.

I just did a trial zoom meeting with myself, worked fine. I can turn off the video while in the meeting. I have a small phone and if I have trouble getting any sort of view of the keyboard without holding it. The only thing is you cannot be sure it's me playing and not one of my cats...it can really be that bad smile

Well, that was quick. I went from never having used Zoom and not having it on my computer to being a paid subscriber sometime between practicing the piano at 1am this morning and working on some music theory exercises at 2am. LOL. (Poor impulse control. Although I should also blame poor impulse control for shopping for opera DVD's on Amazon 13 months ago, but ending up with a piano that hadn't crossed my conscious mind before that moment, and that incident of loss of impulse control resulted in piano lessons and a new beautiful hobby! So poor impulse control can be good. grin )

I can host if we want it to go on more than 40 mins. But 40 mins is also ok. Whatever people think is good.

So who is hosting, cmb13? Or does this work in a more ad hoc fashion than that?

Shoot, did I miss it? D'oh. If it's still going on, I'd need a Zoom link?

Sorry, work today is busier than expected, time got away from me.

Thanks for organizing that! It was lovely meeting you, Sibylle and Moo : ) and chatting. Connecting faces to online handles. You and Moo : ) played wonderful pieces. Perhaps next time I will beat my Clementi into shape and join you smile

Let's do again soon (but maybe with a better platform for music/piano transmission than Zoom!)

I second all of the above! It's wonderful to be in a "room" (albeit a virtual one) with three other people whose eyes won't glaze over as I gush on about everything piano related. Lovely seeing you all and putting faces to the names smile

Yes, that was a ton of fun! So unbelievably amazing that we can video chat and play music like that across the ocean in 3 countries, 2 continents. Just astonishing!

The second was Piazzolla, Milonga del Angel. I have that and the Liszt (and others) recorded on my YouTube channel.

The Rach was Devine, Moo! I think it's on my "Someday" list (yes, I actually do have a "Someday" list!)

Hope to do it again soon.

The Piazzolla was very nice. I have no idea who he is so will have to look him up. The Rach I knew, but Moo : ) did it so well.

BTW, re: Consolation No. 3, a new PW member is asking about whether it is too hard for them to learn over in Pianist Corner and someone pointed out is is RCM 10! Wow. But regardless, you did a very impressive job with it. I'd think you'd want to keep this one in your fingers and not let it fade out of your repertoire smile

Maybe we'll do it again in a couple of months, as winder winds down.

With regards to the format, we spoke for most of the time, played a little. We didn't prepare much ahead of time, so it was very informal. I liked that. There was no pressure to have a perfect performance, just to play a little for one another. Moo and I each played two pieces; the others weren't yet ready but will be very soon.

Zoom was excellent in terms of formatting and video quality; it even highlighted the person currently speaking on the main screen which was really cool (I used a MacBook). It also allows for all kinds of formats (computer, phone, iPad). It was also free, but limited to 40 min. It allowed us to extend that as a trial. We could, of course have ended and resumed another meeting if needed.

The limiting factor was sound quality. On my second piece, I used my external mic, which the others said made a big difference. I'm not sure if there is a similar format that allows better audio quality......would be interested in finding out. I do suspect the limitation may be bandwidth, or bit rate / compression, but can't be sure.

Sorry I missed you yesterday. I hadn't been up long enough anyway. I did stop in to look for the meeting ID, but I guess I'm the unlucky one in that more often than not, the site hangs for me. I click on a post, go do something else, and then come back and hope the page is up.

As for setup, I'd like to use the camera I already have since it's already in place, but I'll need extra cable/software to use it as a webcam. Not sure what sort of compression Zoom applies to the feed. Does it vary between free and paid version?

Another option would be to meet in one of the practice rooms on Discord, no video though, just audio. However, the audio quality there is sometimes lacking.

I just found this feature of Zoom a minute ago. Perhaps we could try turning off the echo cancellation and post processing in Zoom. That might have a positive effect when playing music, since those features apply to speech anyways. This explains how all this works in Zoom.
