I'm in search of the first digital piano for my kid and found Pianoworld. So far I was able to learn so much about the digital pianos from all the threads - thank you everyone!

After several weeks of going back and forth between several Yamaha Clavinova models, I first narrowed down the choices to CLP-635 & CLP-645. I soon realized I wanted the keys to have "wooden" keys for better feel closer to acoustic pianos. I found some local shops where they were selling CLP-545 at a slight discounted price as well but not much lower compared to 645. Having my mind set on finding the reasonably priced wooden keys, I decided to expand my search outside Yamaha and started to look at Kawai brand.

I was hoping to find dealer nearby of CA series to try (78, 58, or 48) but didn't seem to have one in stock. However, one of authorized dealer showed me CS10 which was one of their last new one remaining. I definitely liked the key action and how it felt but the price & the fact newer model CS11 worried me.
So here is my questions -
1. Comparing Yamaha CLP-645 and Kawai CS10, is CS10 too old? or rather is the new technology of CLP-645 substantially better than Kawai's CS10?
2. If the price of both pianos are comparable is one better than the other? It's been hard to compare Yamaha vs Kawai based on their model numbers so I'm not even sure if comparing these 2 even make any sense.
3. I haven't seen much reviews of CS10 but saw many positive reviews of CS11 so maybe CS10 is too old by now. Am I a fool even considering CS10 which is almost 5-6 years old?

By the way, I'm in US and found that the Yamaha Clavinova pianos are almost 40% cheaper! but can't seem to bring it over here. So not fair!

Thank you!

At this point, CS-10 is old. Even CS-11 has older sound technology compared to CA-98 and CA-78 Pianist mode sound. CS-12 with Pianist mode is expected sometime in future.

The key benefit of CS series is shiny black look. If you are fine with matte black look of CA-78/98, I would recommend those over CS11. And definitely stay away from CS-10 at this point.

Besides from the sound technology, what about the key action? Is Grand Feel vs Grand Feel II significant upgrade?

I'm yet to find out the prices for the other model, but I noticed CS10 because the dealer offered a price that's compatible to Yamaha CLP-645 at under $4k. The discount is probably due to the fact it's old and the new ones are out on the floor.

I'm going to find out more about CA78, 98. So far, I definitely prefer the key action responses on Kawai over Yamaha.

Thanks!

As someone who has had Grand Feel (1) action DP for over a year, no. It's not a significant upgrade at all. It's more or less crazy to upgrade your DP solely based on moving from GF1 to GF2, as they're SO much more similar than they are different.

I have never had a DP with GF I but I have GFII equipped CA67 - and it is absolutely great action. Only better action in DP is Yamaha AvantGrand or Kawai Novus.

Yamaha's 645 only uses wood for the white keys, the black ones are plastic.
Not sure about the 685 but that's probably out of budget anyway.

As for GF I vs GF 2: you probably have to be a concert pianist to be able to tell them apart and appreciate the subtle differences.
Don't worry about it. I have the RM3-Grand II (predecessor of GF 1). It feels great and is quiet.

The changes between GF1 and GF2 are noticeable, but extremely subtle:

Different hammer weighting and positioning. Gf2 feels slightly heavier.
GF2 can be played off the jack (note sounds from letoff)
Gf2 has ebony feel black key texture
Gf2 has 88 key counterweight (gf1 actually has 87 key weights, guess which is missing one :))

As to the Yamaha, I don't think any of their natural wood or grand touch actions have wooden black keys, just the whites.
