OP iamanders Full Member I Joined: Apr 2015 Posts: 265	I've heard from a pianist that traditional folk music is played on a piano like you do on the accordion but I never undwrstood him.. He played Swedish music but I guess it applies to other traditions as well. Has anyone tried playing traditional folk music on the piano? What did you do with comping? Did you play bas, chords or second melodies under the real melody (in Sweden they call it andrastÃ¤mma for the violinists).

And it seems like the LH plays the bass and RH plays the fiddle or vocal. Whenever I hear Swedish folk on piano it sounds like classical music. but think about this: if two fiddlers were to play a tune they would play the original melody and a second part (andrastÃ¤mma the Swedes call it. What do you Norwegians call it?). Could you DrBekken do that on piano or is it difficult?

You should check out the music of Norwegian pianist Ingfrid Breie Nyhus, especially SLÃ…TTEPIANO - a truly wonderful recording where she specialises in just that. The 1st link is right tempo for dancing. (I've danced this Finnish polka many times) The 2nd link does not work...but not hard to find recordings of The Kid from Red Bank by Basie. Of course it can be played on piano and it sounds like it. The atmosphere is best captured on a button accordion though. Can't be beat. Will do some R&B for a while. Give the classical a break. You can spend the rest of your life looking for music on a sheet of paper. You'll never find it, because it just ain't there. - Me Myself
