Hello group,

I just bought a used Kohler and campbell console piano. I would love some insight any of you have on them. It was built around 1974 and I am only the 2nd owner. The couple bought it brand new when their daughter was small and she gave up lessons and it hasn't been played much at all. The pedals are still stiff. The condition is excellent. Any opinions would be appreciated!

My opinion is that you should get it tuned and ask the tuner's opinion.

Typically folks ask for opinions before they purchase.

I did ask opinions before I bought it! I just thought that I would get some opinions on this forum. I called my local technician about it. He seemed to think I got an awesome deal.

Tina,
According to Larry Fine's survey, most tech's said that the Kohler & Campbell consoles were fairly well made and came out of the factory in decent regulation. However, They did agree there was a problem in tuning them accurately, because of scale design deficiencies, in addition, the technicians found the case parts to be very poorly designed for servicing...and also the tone is not good overall. Sorry for the downside info among techs, there were some problems in the 70's when it came to some pianos. Again, this info comes from the Larry Fine Piano Book. There you are then. Enjoy your piano. When you are ready to trade up, come on back and you will get plenty of pre-purchase advice and opinion.

edit: Ahh gee, I read my post and it sounds like I'm being a jerk. I don't mean to be. Let's just say that such piano is probably not one that you would have been advised to buy by the many piano geeks here. It should be noted that the regulars here are all very piano informed - and - players. If you are just learning, you did fine. Enjoy the adventure. Post again when you are looking to upgrade..

lol....Thanks Mike for the reply! I did kind of think you were a little harsh! he he! I am glad you cleared that up! NO hard feelings though smile And yes I am a fairly new player. I learn by ear and don't take lessons. I play mostly old southern gospel so I am really not in need of anything elaborate. I do thank you for the reply!

Also Thanks Jonathon for your info out of Larry Fine's book. I really appreciate it!

Hi Tina,

I recently purchased a 1966 model Kohler and Campbell 46.5 inch studio upright from the original owner and I love it. It sounds great and the Pratt-Reed action is nice and smooth with a light touch. It may not be a tier one piano but a nice piano still. So, based on my on experience with Kohler and Campbell, I think they are nice pianos. However, please keep in mind that all pianos are individual and the same model of the same brand may sound differently from one to another.

You will get a broad range of opinions here (all of which is purely subjective, as is mine). Occasionally you will get verifiable facts to back up an argument. Don’t let a gruff response discourage you from participating in the forum or enjoying your new-to-you piano.

By-the-way, I too like traditional Southern Gospel, classic country, blues and jazz.

Best regards,

Rickster

I had a circa (approx) 1977/78 K&C console before I bought my Estonia 190 two years ago. It gave me a number of years of good service before I outgrew it completely. It was the piano for me at the time, at the right price. Enjoy it until you don't enjoy it anymore. You will know if and when the time comes. Just don't go playing any good Grands or the time will come much sooner than you might want it to. wink

You will be 10 years older ten years from now no matter what, so go for it.

Well my Technician just left and he seems to think by looking at my piano that I got a really good deal. He said that it is in extremely good shape and that it would probably sell for around $1500 in a retial shop used.

So I am happy considering I only gave $550 for it!
