Source of music:Sheet music
Instrument used:Pianoteq Grotrian through Roland FP50
Recording method:Audacity. Thumb drive from P'teq

Additional info:Mozart was nobody's fool. so when he's having a laugh, you laugh too. And he is here, imo. Hacking up a child's nursery rhyme and turning it into something special.
This is a fun piece; the sad bits are just to add a bit o' balance, so he would tell us. Allegedly.
So I'll have a bit of fun too.
I'll carve this up for two reasons.
1) I can't manage some o' those LH notes and mistakes are never far away.
2) Some things definitely need rearranging. According to moi.
Sorry guys. But sometimes a man has gotta do what a man has gotta do. And I sure enjoyed doin' it!
But I do apologise over the time. AND it's stitched at approx. 6.00mins. I might've been able to get a single take on this, but, well . . .other things beckon.
'Bye for now . . . . .Have fun

Additional info:I'd come across a performance of this on YouTube that I thought was just lovely. I decided at that point to learn it. Once I got through the first version of the theme, I didn't take any further for quite some time. It stalled, but I was still playing it and satisfied to just work on the expressiveness of it. Finally realizing I needed to move along with it if I were ever to record it, the remaining 3/4's of it came quite quickly. A bad side effect of this is that I didn't really start working on the trickiest parts early enough. At the time of recording I had about a 50% success rate with the quick runs in the 3rd version of the theme smile . In a previous recording attempt I'd actually nailed all them really nice, but it fell apart elsewhere and overall not good enough. The truth of the matter was, I didn't have them completely secure. This recording thus, is a better representation of where it is at. As with all pieces like this, for me, there is always more to do with it. A good thing I think as it gives more reason to keep coming back to them. There are a couple of other issues where I ventured away from the score slightly. Those that know it, will likely pick up on it. Thankfully it will be easy enough to fix, but I hadn't noticed it until after recording. Although one of the easier Nocturnes, I also think one of the best and I will develop it further.

Thank you for listening.

Title of piece:The Town I loved So Well
Composer:Phil Coulter
Duration:02:35
Source of music:sheet music
Instrument used:Yamaha P112N (Silent feature used)
Recording method:audacity to PC
Technical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:This song (and it IS a song), holds a special place in my heart. I was shopping for an acoustic piano after only 9 months of lessons, and as you may imagine, I didn't have enough skill (or repertoire) to play anything that demonstrated the full range of any of the pianos we were testing.
I invited my first piano teacher and a very good friend to come and help me, and my friend was "forced" to play this piece on every piano we looked at.
I loved the piece from the first time I heard it - there's a poignancy to it that catches my heart every time I hear or play it. I'm still working at capturing that in my performance - but I feel it coming, bit by bit. I hope you hear it too.

The song was composed by Phil Coulter, an Irishman (like my friend) and it is about his hometown of Derry. He reminisces about what it was like in his childhood - and how it changed as the Troubles made their presence felt. At the top of the score, under the title, he has a note that says out of all his compositions this one has been the most rewarding. And he asks that we be gentle with it.

I'd like to dedicate this piece to my friend, Thomas.

THE TOWN I LOVED SO WELL
In my memory I will always see
the town that I have loved so well
Where our school played ball by the gasyard wall
and we laughed through the smoke and the smell
Going home in the rain, running up the dark lane
past the jail and down behind the fountain
Those were happy days in so many, many ways
in the town I loved so well

In the early morning the shirt factory horn
called women from Creggan, the Moor and the Bog
While the men on the dole played a mother's role,
fed the children and then trained the dogs
And when times got tough there was just about enough
But they saw it through without complaining
For deep inside was a burning pride
in the town I loved so well

There was music there in the Derry air
like a language that we all could understand
I remember the day when I earned my first pay
And I played in a small pick-up band
There I spent my youth and to tell you the truth
I was sad to leave it all behind me
For I learned about life and I'd found a wife
in the town I loved so well

But when I returned how my eyes have burned
to see how a town could be brought to its knees
By the armoured cars and the bombed out bars
and the gas that hangs on to every tree
Now the army's installed by that old gasyard wall
and the damned barbed wire gets higher and higher
With their tanks and their guns, oh my God, what have they done
to the town I loved so well

Now the music's gone but they carry on
For their spirit's been bruised, never broken
They will not forget but their hearts are set
on tomorrow and peace once again
For what's done is done and what's won is won
and what's lost is lost and gone forever
I can only pray for a bright, brand new day
in the town I loved so well

Additional info:I first learned this little waltz back in October. I played it much more slowly then, and while it was fairly effective, this piece sounds much better when played a bit faster in my opinion.

I'm still not quite done with the piece; I'm working to add it to my repertoire, which means I'll have to pick it up once more in 3 months from now.

Additional info:At the moment this would be my desert island piece - I'm sure I'll get bored of it eventually but there's enough variation and emotional range in it to keep me going back to it. It ends in a quietly triumphant way and hitting the last D major chord really feels like you've been on a journey. smile

Title of piece:Schumann - Knecht Ruprecht - Op. 68 No. 12
Composer:Robert Schumann
Duration:03:10
Source of music:I have full Album fur die Jugend edition from Schumann, which is also the source of this sheet music.
Instrument used:Roland F-130R digital piano
Recording method:Digital to PC via Scarlett Solo; recorded with Ableton Live; encoded with Audacity.
Technical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:I think it's a nice piece and rather educational for switching between characters. It also has these gnarly octave jumps in the beginning that are good to master. One could always play a bit faster I suppose and there's no cap to getting the dynamics just right. So far it is the piece I most enjoy playing from this album.

I actually had some left over pizza for lunch. Was good.

Composer:Chopin
Duration:00:48
Source of music:Sheet music
Instrument used:Yamaha W110BW (U1)
Recording method:iPhone 7
Technical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:I wished to submit a 4-minute Mozart sonata movement, but the recording I did just after finishing it is quite stiff and lifeless, and now it looks like I forgot the whole thing laugh So this time I will only bother you with 16 bars of music smile

I had tried to learn this prelude several times to no avail, because I couldn't manage the leaps. Now it looks like I can, and it kind of happened all of a sudden. Of course pedal, voicing and smoothness could be better, but I'm quite happy with the tempo and shaping. So finally here's the last of the 4 "easy" preludes for me, now on to more scary stuff!

Composer:Kohei Tanaka
Duration:03:11
Source of music:Own transcription
Instrument used:Kawai CS7 + VI Labs Ravenscroft 275 VST
Technical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:For this recital I decided on something non-classical. This is my own transcription of Binks' Sake, a song from the Japanese manga/anime series One Piece. This song was commonly sung amongst the pirates of old.

It was especially good fun to write my own transcription to this song.
https://app.box.com/s/3kbx3ot19ifs7gl9zy7yjbfc9yraigso

Lyrics (English translation):

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hohoho (x4)

Going to deliver Binks' Sake!
Following the sea breeze! Riding on the waves!
Far across the salty depths! The merry evening sun!
The birds sing as they draw circles in the sky!

Farewell to the harbor, To my old hometown
Lets all sing out with a Don! As the ship sets sail
Waves of gold and silver dissolve to salty spray
As we all set sail to the ends of the sea

Going to deliver Binks' Sake!
We are pirates sailing through the Sea!
The waves are our pillows, The ship our roost
Flying the proud skull on our flags and our sails

Now comes a storm through the far-off sky
Now the waves are dancing, Beat upon the drums
If you lose your nerve this breath could be your last
But if you just hold on, The morning sun will rise

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hohoho (x4)

Going to deliver Binks' Sake!
Today, and tomorrow, our dreams through the night!
Waving our goodbyes, we'll never meet again!
But don't look so down, For tomorrow night the moon will also rise!

Going to deliver Binks' Sake!
Let's all sing it with a Don! A song of the waves
Doesn't matter who you are, Someday you'll just be bones
Never-Ending, Ever-wandering, Our funny Traveling tale!

Yo-hohoho, Yo-hohoho (x4)

Title of piece:Notturno
Composer:Grieg, Edvard
Duration:05:18
Instrument used:1927 Bechstein Model L
Technical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:Just started this one in December, so it's still a work in progress - needs to be quicker I think, and I really need to shape the melody better, but there's a lot of stuff going on underneath it.

Memorizing it is difficult - the harmonies are very chromatic, which is what gives it that lovely sound, but its easy to get lost in the chords and get off by a half step or so!

I love it though, and have heard it many times in the quarterly recitals. I would like to do a set of three of Grieg's Lyric Pieces for my full recital at school - we'll see.
