Can't run Garritan CFX Lite on macOS High Sierra?

Hey all, I just purchased CFX lite to use with my Kawai CA-67 digital piano. After finishing the installation I was excited to try out the piano, but it seems that the program can't detect my piano despite being connected with a USB cord! Pianoteq works fine, so it's not the connections. Is it because of compatibility issues with the newest version of macOS? Or am I missing something? Do I need to fiddle with any settings before it works? Any help is appreciated!

It seems like whenever I try to change it to USB-MIDI, the program crashes. And it's a well-known issue with the newest version of MacOS. Should have done my research before purchasing. frown

Are you using the correct USB output on the piano? Ie the one with the squarish hole in the back panel labeled USB to HOST - NOT the rectangular one by the phone jack (labeled USB to DEVICE). You need a cable with USB-B to go in the socket on the piano - and USB-A end plugs into the Computer.

I use my CA-67 to drive PianoMarvel running on my Macbook air running High Sierra 10.13.3 and it certainly sees the MIDI signals with that.

Yes, I'm using the correct ports. I know this because Pianoteq 6 works fine for me, but CFX doesn't. It crashes when I try to change the MIDI input. Anyone know a workaround to use CFX lite with macOS High Sierra?

I run high Sierra and sierra on 2012-2016 MBPs and CFX works fine. When I first set it up it took a little while to get working. You do need to go to file/prefs in cfx to select the ca-67 in the middle input field (I believe Kawais show up as generic midi devices).

That is too bad.

But you can run Garritan CFX with the free Plogue Sforzando player.

https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando/

Takes a few minutes to download and set up as it is not 100% intuitive. You will lose some of the functions (like the reverb which you don't need as the samples have plenty of ambience as it is). It loads very fast!

Normally, when people have PC problems I jokingly suggest "GET A MAC".
In this case, with Mac problems, I'd suggest "GET A PC".

But, humor aside for a moment ...
You say that Pianoteq works fine.
On my PC, Pianoteq's "Devices" options panel shows these choices:
- Listen to all MIDI inputs
- AudioBox USB MIDI In
- LoopMidi1
- LoopMidi2

"AudioBox USB MIDI In" is my MIDI source. That's what I use for Pianoteq. And that's what I use for my Kontakt-based pianos.
I'm running LoopMidi, and that's why those last two are there. You probably aren't using LoopMidi, so you won't see those.
So with the failing GFX setup, have you chosen the same MIDI source that you're using with Pianoteq?

Have you updated to the latest macOS patch? I remember in some of them they mentioned something about USB audio, not sure. I’m on High Sierra too and don’t have any problems.

I would be tempted to answer : do as I do : use a PC... but would prefer : do as I do : use a DAW. (Reaper, GarageBand...).

Then the Garritan CFX player won’t use the MIDI port directly. Reaper can be tested freely and doesn’t cost a lot. I suppose GarageBand to be already installed on the Mac and compatible with Garritan CFX.

I use the CFX Grand with MacOS 10.13.3 with no issues. (Well, it was a pain to install, but it works after that.) I do have the full version. I just loaded the compact piano and had no trouble. On preferences (under the main menu) make sure to select your device if one selects only "CFX grand" you are selecting the screen keyboard.

What well known issue? I run the full version of CFX with Mac High Sierra and USB-MIDI with ZERO problems.
