My daughter will be applying to a music pre college program (piano) for the fall of 2018. She will be 7th grade when the program starts and this will be her first year. Classes and lessons will be on Saturdays only. The program offers the option to take electives, and I wanted to ask if it is advisable/recommended for her to choose chamber music as an elective in her first semester during her first year.

Required Courses are:
Private Lesson - 1 hour
Theory/Musicianship - 1 hour
Ensamble - will choose chorus for this

I'm thinking there might be room for squeeze one elective; however, the program does not require her to take an elective. I looked at the Stony Brook program (which she will not be applying for) website for an example and over there, chamber is a required course though SBU does not include private lessons in their curriculum. So I thought maybe she could do a chamber elective where she'll be applying but don't know if this is too overwhelming.

What is typical for first time pre college students?

Chamber music sounds like fun. This experience is usually not available to students taking private lessons only.

I doubt the program will be too overwhelming.
