Has anybody played this? The first three movements aren't too bad, but then BAM! The fourth movement has some insanely fast passagework.

Any tips? Anybody by chance have a fingering for mm. 193-220 of the fourth movement?

Shostakovich was a terrific pianist if I remember correctly.

From Wiki:"After graduation, Shostakovich initially embarked on a dual career as concert pianist and composer, but his dry style of playing was often unappreciated (his American biographer, Laurel Fay, comments on his "emotional restraint" and "riveting rhythmic drive"). He nevertheless won an "honorable mention" at the First International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1927."

Some videos of Shostakovich playing:

Yes, he was a very good pianist, although his own recording of his second Concerto isn't always the cleanest. I'd be interested to hear him play this, if a recording exists. I recently heard Richter/Rostropovich, and goodness gracious, Richter makes this passage sound so easy.

I played the whole thing when a student and remember the movement with horror.... I can only recommend carefully making a suitable fingering and practising verrrrry slowly at first. Btw, I have to play just the 4th movement this February at an exam - luckily, only the cellist will get a grade for this!

Here is the Shosty/Rostopovy recording:

Richter probably practiced the passage for at least a half hour haha. There is some famous story (that I can't remember the details of) with someone congratulating Richter after a performance and complementing him on his mastery of a particular piece or passage with Richter saying something like he practiced it for a whole half hour.
