Hi pianofriends, Gingko2, what do you mean with ' Pieces for my husband :-) ' , ......What about me?..... I decided in September for a partly retirement; only working two days a week. In September I will stop working at my college and will be 'an old man' Think about more playing somewhere and some private piano/organlessons for beginners. Best regards, Johan B My husband really doesn't care for "classical" music--but is tolerant of my interest! I had set a goal in 2017 of learning a few pieces that he would particularly like. Somehow I didn't get to them. I will make a point in 2018 to play some pieces my husband really enjoys. Maybe he is getting used to classical, I think...marriage always involves compromises Congratulations on your partial retirement and how you have more musical adventures. Swiss MS, congrats on your wonderful piano. I can only imagine... Enjoy! Sorry to hear of those with difficult times in 2017. The year 2017 was not the best for our family either but I'm hoping for us and for everyone else that 2018 will be better. Best wishes.

Here are the goals you set last year......and I promised you remembering.... Your goals in december 2016What is realized? Best regards, Johan B That helps with the response. I see that I was suitably vague: Same as always. Grow in skills. Suss out weaknesses and improve them. Build on what has been started. Let it evolve as it goes along in the year. Last year was pretty good in that regard. There's not much to say. From week to week or month to month one doesn't see much progress, but when you look back at what you played a year ago, and how you played it, things have changed. So in that sense, the (vague) goals I set out were reached. My goals are no different for the next year.

I don't recall my goals for 2017 since I didn't have any long term goals, but I'll put it in terms of achievements, I think Keystring put it quite well, and I feel much the same, as long as I keep moving forwards.
Sure, I have week to week pieces I practice, repertoire I focus on so there is a short term plan always, but there is never, I do this course in 6 months, or I want to have this book completed by X etc. etc. It takes however long it takes.
1) Took part in all ABF recitals and brought those pieces to performance level as best as I could, I have found this to be one of the most rewarding things. I love the polishing stages of pieces when it all comes together, but the recitals are a good incentive to do so. This has been harder in some cases for some pieces than others .. naturally.
2) Play for friends and family a few pieces now and again,a home recital. Done, 3 times.
3) Always keep a few pieces alive that are ready to go and ones I can play any time.
4) Overall gradually kept improving in all areas little by little.
5) I switched mainly focusing on classical music now, and much less of the stuff I used to play like Einaudi, new age etc.
6) Plenty improvising and composing new pieces now and again for fun. Improvising is part of my daily practice routine, pop tunes, whatever, but incorporating what I learn from playing sheet music, new techniques ideas etc, and I find it crosses over nicely and has been working well.
Selftaught since June 2014. Books: Barratt classic piano course bk 1,2,3. Humphries Piano handbook, various... Kawai CA78, Casio AP450 & software pianos. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.pianoworld.com/ABF_Medals/12xmedals.jpg) 12x ABF recitals. My struggles: https://soundcloud.com/alexander-borro

Happy New Year everyone, and thanks Johan B for your annual goal-setting and review threads, I really appreciate them!
1. MOYD 2017 - year 4 for me I fell off the wagon on 1 day, quite close to the end of the year, but overall I consider this another successful MOYD year 2. Follow my teacher's practice plan (main rep pieces, scales & arps, other technical work) Yes, up to the end of June, when my teacher gave up teaching to concentrate on performance. After the summer I took up lessons with a jazz teacher with mixed results. In particular I was unwilling to switch my focus to 100% jazz and so I really did not meet this goal with the new teacher as I was still giving half my practice time to other things 3. Revisit 5 selected pieces previously learned but not at a great level (eg from the last 2 years of the 40 piece challenge) and bring them to a more polished level I revisited some pieces that were either learned to a basic level before or where only part of the piece had been learned. I brought 2 or 3 of these to a reasonably polished level and there are a couple more that are still very much WIP. 4. Select 5 pieces that were properly learned (at least when you compare to the pieces I'm talking about in #3!) and relearn/maintain these I have revisited/relearned at least 5, but haven't necessarily maintained them after that 5. Explore a bit with lead sheets/play by ear/Irish trad/jazz Well, in terms of the goal as expressed, I certainly achieved it. As I mentioned above though, I struggled with the balance between this and my "regular" playing, and found the teacher's style a bit overwhelming, so it doesn't entirely feel like success
Now to consider 2018...
