Very similar to last years goals, only the grade level has changed.

1. Prepare for and sit AMEB grade 6 in November 2018
2. Sight read everyday and don't fall of the wagon for months like I did last year
3. Make an active start on trying to read ahead instead of my current "wing" it approach
4. Start work on my first Bach Fugue
5. Make practice sessions goal orientated
6. Don't get distracted from the mission

Problems with piano are 90% psychological, the other 10% is in your head.

Using my app (Activity Tracker) I logged 550 hours of practice in 2017. My goal for 2018 is to duplicate or possibly increase that amount.

I'd also like to make it up to lesson 40 in the Duane Shinn 52 Week Crash Course. I'm currently finishing lesson 19.

God Bless,
David

1. MOYD - year 5 for me of daily practice
2. 40-piece challenge - I took last year off from this, but this year I am back in. Planning to engage a bit differently this time, my primary object is to engage with lots of new pieces, but I'm less concerned with finishing them/doing the whole piece. Engage with something new more or less every week, at a level that I can achieve something with it in 5-10 mins a day, but "something" doesn't have to mean "play the entire piece"
3. Repertoire - I did better on this goal last year than in previous years but I definitely haven't cracked it. This year I want to get better at integrating the relearning and maintenance of previously learned repertoire pieces into my practice routine.
4. Find a balance in my practice routine, incorporating new pieces, old pieces, 40-piece challenge pieces, non-classical pieces, technical stuff

Edited to add:
5. Practice with intention
6. Have fun and enjoy the process: "Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance toward the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point. Climb slowly, steadily, enjoying each passing moment; and the view from the summit will serve as a fitting climax for the journey"

1. MOYD - carry that digital with me on vacation.
2. Learn to play with my left hand a little better out of my easy fake book.
3. Average 1 hour a day playing. So far that's been my pace so goal is to keep it up.
4. Finish Faber book 1 by March and then finish 2 by year end? IDK if that is realistic but may as well have it as a goal.
and....
5. join the music team at church [ playing electric bass not piano ;-) ]

Started Playing October 1, 2017. First Lesson Oct. 17, 2017. Currently in Faber Accelerated Piano Adventures Book 2 For The Older Beginner. Yamaha P-115.

1. Work through books 3 and 4 of Bartók's Mikrokosmos, which should put me right into the intermediate playing material.
2. Following on the last point, have at least started working on a Lyric Piece by Grieg.
3. Spend time on theory and technique. I neglected these quite essential parts of piano practice. I'll look for a way to implement both into my practice regime.
4. Play for at least 600 hours.
5. Don't buy a new piano.

I've started playing January 2017, Nothing is too easy is where I keep track of my progress.

I have three goals, in the given order of priority.

1. Get started with and finish John Thompson Grade 2 book.
2. Learn some pieces that I like to listen to to a level that I can play it for others.
3. Clear Trinity Grade 2 Theory and Grade 1 Practical exams.

Simple goal, be my teachers best student. Any other goal is not necessary, that one will keep me busy for years.

Some of my goals are the same, some are modified, some are new!

2017:
Stay with MOYD-this will be my eighth year!
2018: I've signed up , moving into (gasp!) my 9th year! woohoo!

2017
Participate in all the e-citals and at least one themed recital.
2018: keep all the e-citals as goals, but I'm not committed to a themed recital. We'll see. I'd like to participate in one live recital (not a piano party, a real recital, where there would even be people I don't know in the audience!

2017
Participate in at least 2 public performances
2018 - yes, I'll try for this again!

2017
Play for others - at least 6 times (husband doesn't count for this, he's my most faithful supporter, but I have to play for people who don't hear me regularly)
2018 I'm going to up this to 12 times. I have the Performance Anxiety Club going now, and our plan is to meet once a month - but we'll be off a couple of times in the summer --- still, I think I can do it!

2017Continue to work on technique - focused practice, more use of metronome during study for getting fluidity from the start.
2018 How could I give up on that?

2017Follow a system of refreshing pieces so that I have some sort of repertoire
Now I have about 6-7 pieces I can pick up and play. I'm aiming for a total of 20
2018 --- I didn't meet this goal for 2017, so I am just going to leave it as is.

2018
learn the harmonic and melodic minor scales and arpeggios.
work on a composition
work on playing from lead sheets

I am a slow learner when it comes to piano so my goals are much more modest that most.

1. To continue with lessons. I just retired so my income has been greatly reduced. I'll need to find a way to finance this. I foresee a part time job in my future.

2. To finally overcome my arch-nemesis the metronome. My sense of time is not the best and I need to internalize this before I can move on.

3. To complete another year of MOYD.

Modest but necessary goals.

A lack of talent does not stop you from learning piano. It just takes longer and you have to work harder.

1. Be more consistent in creating new instrumentals.
2. Learn sound design (At least good enough to create some of my own sounds).
3. Start producing / recording professional sounding music.

2018 is the year where I start 'mastering' my music. No pun intended.

Resolutions, or hopes, for the new year:
1) Learn some pieces well enough to play them with confidence for others;
2) Play some music, musically, for some of my very musical friends.
These are really the same, almost!
3) Continue to play without stress or strain or injury, and with pleasure and attention.
4) Record and upload some pieces, even if I am not satisfied with them, so I can look back later and see my progress.
5) Apply my “perfectionist” tendencies for good, not evil! That is, work to get better at playing, but also take risks, the better to explore and to share the beauty of the music.

Thank you for presenting this question!

My goal is to learn the piano (complete adult beginner)
MOYD will help me do this.
Learn from the experiences and wisdom of all of you!
Smile each night when sitting down at the piano.

I'll be getting my first (and quite likely last) Grand this year (probably February), so I'm hyped up for the year. My goals for the year in random order:

  • To learn at least one piece that's graded 7 ABRMS
  • Learn a whole lot of easier ones (anything from 4-6) currently in my range
  • Get my training regimen down to actually properly practice scales and stuff more regularly
  • Start improvising!
  • Compose more than "just a little bit randomly"
  • Record every piece I learn (if not for anything else, then for record keeping)
  • Personal blog about piano practice, insights, technique

I know one shouldn't think of music as grades, but it is that extra achievement that'd benchmark an accomplishment. Advancing a grade per year isn't too far fetched anyway and most of the pieces I want to play start around grade 8.

2018 is just about over and I was considering my post from "last year."

I put approximately 520 hours of practice in and made it through Lesson 33 in the Duane Shinn 52 Week Crash Course. So I came up a little short of my goals, but close enough. How did you'all do?

God Bless,
David

I was just thinking that Johan B would soon revive this thread (on December 26th as promised) but he didn't. I haven't seen him here for a while.
