This is the official signup and participation thread for the 2018 "40 Pieces A Year Challenge"! We'll use this thread for signups, tracking progress, recordings (if you decide to share them) and discussion.

The Goal: To learn, perform and experience forty piano pieces in a year.

The Method: Pieces can include any genre (e.g., classical, jazz, rock, pop, arrangements). Most of these will be (should be) below your current skill level. These pieces do not have to be completed to a polished final standard. Ultimately, the pieces are for skill building, technique development, rhythm work, sight-reading, exploring new music and having fun.

The Rules: There are no rules. It is up to you on how to craft this challenge.

Tracking Your Progress: Please check in with this thread when you complete your pieces - we'll keep a running total for everyone at the top and edit it as needed. Please feel free to upload any recordings that you're making (this is not a requirement). We are a supportive group, so the more you participate and ask questions, the more you will get out of the challenge!

Some Notes About Skill Levels and Competition: We all have many different backgrounds and skill levels, so this challenge will look different for each one of us. Our goal is to support and foster people's drive to complete the challenge, no matter what skill level. Please be kind and refrain from bringing negative attitudes into the thread, whether towards yourself or towards others! This is about meeting the challenge (and the piano) where you are rather than comparing yourself to others.

For more details about the inspiration and source of this challenge, please read these pieces by Elissa Milne:

You didn't fail. Life throws things in the way, and sometimes it slows us down. I didn't complete 40 this year, either. But, it was not a failure. I did what I could, and, benefited from every bit of it. I'll bet you benefited as well. No regrets! smile

I agree. You did not fail! Piano is all about the journey. We are never ending students, working to get better everyday.

If this challenge can can help along the way, then it has served its purpose. This challenge is not about the number of pieces, it
is about bringing breadth to your learning experience.

FWIW, it did not hit 40 last year. I am moving on and looking forward.

Happy New Year!

I didn't reach the 40 piece goal 2 years in a row as well but I didn't let that get me down so don't let it get you down. I agree with Ralphiano and Scorpio that it's about the journey and not the numbers. 40 is just a target and everyone has different approaches to it and other things factor in as well like curve balls in life, how long a piece takes to learn and play, etc.

I'm doing a piece a week book for my sight reading work so I might as well (I probably did 40 last year too but was bad about updating.)

Instruments: Yamaha CLP-685, Kawai ES110
Pieces In Progress:
  • Chopin Waltz in A minor Poshumous (almost performance ready)
  • Chopin Mazurka in B flat Major Op 7 (very much W.I.P.)
  • Beethoven "Easy Sonata" 20 No. 2 (just started)

Count me in. I'll do the best I can. I appreciate the "There are no rules. It is up to you on how to craft this challenge." Last year was 28 pieces and I might feel comfortable with even fewer, but the important thing is to keep playing different music.

Thanks for your hard work on this, scorpio!

My post is right below yours, torquenale, so I want to say that certainly everyone welcomes you to join, even if you don't get to 40 pieces. PWF and ABF, in particular, are so supportive.

How do you count fairly. Do you only include pieces you start in 2018 or can you include pieces you started earlier and are still working on?

I encourage you to include them all, even the ones you started before the end of the year. "Fair" is not an issue.

Remember, we are not competing, so, getting to 40 first, last, in the middle, doesn't matter. 40 is just a number that emphasizes the need to take many repetitions through the cycle of learning a song. And, that's the fundamental program, learning lots of pieces.

Also, the more you post, the greater the collateral benefits for all participants. One of the very nice and oft cited benefits of posting as many songs as possible is that others get to learn of new composers and new pieces by seeing everyone else' lists.

So, relax, learn a lot of music, and post to your heart's content! smile

I agree with Ralphiano. I started this piece two weeks ago and couldn't get it to a decent level until the first of this year.

Now I'm going to start work on the February recital piece. It's been sitting in my binder for 3 years now and it's time to work on it. But I'm taking the rest of this evening off and will start fresh tomorrow.

Hey guys. I want to sign up for the challenge too. this would be my first time here, so im looking forward to discovering new music via this forum.

A little about myself. I'm preparing for my ATCL. I love Chopin's music! So i'll probably be learning a few too many Chopin pieces via this challenge haha!

i don't really have any proper recording device, only a smartphone, and am not sure how to go about with this aspect of the challenge. i know it's not a requirement, but i would like to try it out. can someone help me out?

That's cheating. It doesn't count.

Just kidding!

It sounds really nice. Good start to the year.

I don't use a smartphone for recording, so I am not much of a help there. Many use Soundcloud (here) to host their recordings. Once you get an free account, you can probably upload the audio file, directly from your phone, to Soundcloud and share the link. That's just a broad overview of the process. There might be others that can give additional advice.

We have some new Piano World users that have joined the 40 Pieces Club. Welcome all to the challenge and to Piano World!

I want to mention and introduce the quarterly recitals to anyone not familiar with them. Four times a year, the Adult Beginners Forum
hosts digital recitals. February is the next recital, the 49th recital in the series. Beginning February 1st, there will be a call for submissions that last two weeks.
During that time you can upload your piano piece in mp3 format using the recital submission process. Then on February 15, the
recital is released for public review. It is a great way to share your progress and to listen to others and their music.

Below are a few links (from the last recital) to get you acquainted with the process.

Recital 48 --- Call For Submissions

Recital 48 --- November 2017

Recital 48 --- General Discussion

And here is the link to the ABF Recital Index, essentially a history of all 48 recitals: ABF Recital Index

I offer this information as a public service announcement, if anyone is interested. This is by no means a requirement. If you have any questions just let us know.

@ralphiano, @mom3gram, @fishandchips. Thank you smile

@PooKay I started out recording on a cell phone 3 years ago. It was an Android phone and the voice recorder app that came with it was hit or miss. Sometimes the recording would be fine but a lot of the time there were some stutters and skips that totally messed up the recording. Just test out what you have and place your phone in various areas to check the sound to see what works best and what sounds the best. Start with your phone close to the piano and record a test. If you don't like it or it sounds too loud, move it back a little and repeat until you get a recording that you like.

We all start out somewhere. I started with a cellphone, moved to a micorphone and a dinky web cam, plugged my digital piano into the computer and recorded like that for a few months up until last week when I finally got my Tascam 8 track recorder (I do other types of music and not just piano) which I recorded my first piece of this challenge on last night. It took me 3 years to get to what I have now and though the waiting was awful, it was well worth it.

@PooKay I'm just using the voice recorder like AnitaPotter mentioned and then adding a still photo of it to create a video on a free moviemaker. There are some websites which may help you with that if you just type: how to upload audio to YouTube. Or something along those lines.

On that note here is my first piece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PZxJYD7PTg
Bach - Invention 1 (a.k.a. that piece recorded on literally every single digital keyboard in the music store)
1/40

I did have a bit of a headstart learning (about one week) the hardest part was definitely combining the left and right hand when both are playing the melody together.

I would say neither the playing nor the audio quality turned out all too bad. I've tried plugging in my laptop into the digital piano for a better quality of sound, but Yamaha has their own things which don't want to have anything to do with my laptop... And, it's all too much of a pain in the neck to set up and its costs are just not worth it with the Yamaha app. So, I decided to use this very spartan and humble equipment instead.

Hi,
1. I record the video part with mi iPhone and upload it to iCloud
2. Simultaneously I record the MIDI with the YAMAHA n2. Many pianos record MIDI to USB drives.
3. I can correct slips editing the MIDI with a sequencer. I use logic for mac.
4. Then I make the piano play the MIDI recorded through output (RCA cable) with an iRig device into the iPhone with the garageband app and then I upload the audio part (m4a) to iCloud as well.
5. Then I import the iCloud movie part and the audio part (m4a) into iMovie and adjust both.
6. Finally I upload the iMovie in MP4 format to iCloud and get a share link that I post here.

Sometimes if the piece doesn't deserve I just upload the recording that I get in step number 1 and upload it to iCloud. This way there are additional noises and the sound isn't that "clean". Also, I can't "cheat" a little bit this way.

hope this helps.

Anita, thanks for the recording advice. I've never tried recording anything with my phone, but I will play around with it and see what it does. I have a digital piano, but no laptop. The piano is downstairs, and my PC is upstairs, so I can't plug my piano into it - not to mention that I wouldn't know how to go about this anyway. LOL. Even using the recording function on my piano for my own playback is complicated enough that I have to read the instructions each time and fumble around with it, and do several tries, which then makes me too distracted to play well, so I just gave up. Anyway, I will experiment with the phone.

Thanks, apassionata. That's way beyond my understanding of technology. Maybe I can get one of my grandchildren to explain all of that to me. I'm lucky that I can make a phone call or text with my phone. LOL!

How much should I master a piece before I move on? There are just a couple rough patches in a song I've been working on, but I've got all the notes down so I'm not sure when to count it.

It's up to you really. The idea isn't about making the piece perfect, but that you worked through something new. Some pieces I try to do a recording, which means it needs to be pretty good. Other pieces I don't.

Hey, Gallantly. Welcome to the forum and to the 40 Pieces Club.

Just decide for yourself, what level of completion you are looking for. We all have our own standards, and each such "own standard" is ok.

I'll share my ideas and you are free to use as much or as little of it as you care to. The most general guideline is that I prepare the piece until I have gotten out of it what I needed or wanted to get out of it. I play a lot of pieces from the RCM Piano Odyssey series, which includes representative selections from the Baroque era through the modern era. It presents me a lot of music I enjoy, as well as a lot of music I detest (stuff from the modern, anti-beauty, anti-musical era).

For the pieces I like, I tend to prepare them to the best of my ability. I like the music, and, if I don't prepare them well, they don't sound like the music they were intended to be.

For the garbage pieces, that I do not enjoy playing, hearing, or inflicting on others, I tend to identify what skill or technique the piece is intended to teach me. When I feel like I have learned that lesson, I am ready to move on, and call it complete.

This minimizes the amount of time I spend suffering through the rubbish, and maximizes the time I get to spend enjoying my play, while also assuring that I get the maximum benefit from each piece and from this 40 piece challenge.

Whatever you decide, be comfortable that it is ok, and, enjoy your progress. Again, welcome aboard. smile

@colorofsound1 Nice job on the Bach invention. I have yet to try any of those...Bach scares me LOL

Love seeing all the new people and returning people as well. Looking forward to hearing/watching recordings from everyone.

Gallantly: As others have said above, the level of quality is totally up to you. I'm with Ralphiano in that the pieces that I like, I play a little longer until I make them sound "musical". Many of those I can record in one take because I don't mind playing them for another week.

If I don't enjoy them, then I get them to the point where I feel I can squeeze a recording out of them as I'm sooo anxious to move on. I reckon that if a piece consists of segments, such as AABA, and I can play EACH of those segments musically more than once, then I'm not going to torture myself for an hour trying to record AABA in one take. So what if I have to do a patch in the middle. (It helps if you have some audio editing application.)

Of course, you don't have to record at all. But I found that until I tried to record them, I wasn't polishing them to a "musical" level. But you will find your own way as you do the challenge.

By the way, I don't work on one piece, record it, then find another piece. I have 3 to 5 pieces I'm working on at one time. I don't work on all of them each day; depends on my mood. Some I'll set aside and never get back to because I just lose interest. Mid-way through the year, I found it best to see where I was at around the 20th of each month, then spend the next week polishing the 3 or 4 I want to record next. Then I would record one each day and upload them to Soundcloud. Then I can "reset" my practice and focus on another batch of 3 to 5 etc. That worked for me, as I avoided the problem of getting one almost ready and then forgetting about it, and having to relearn it.

I have a nice Numbers spreadsheet so I know which ones are "in progress" (there may be 10 or so that I've played around with to varying degrees) and then each month I pick a few to focus on. (If anyone has a Mac with Numbers, I'm happy to share it.)

I also notice another thread where someone said they only wanted to do 10 or 12 pieces. It's worth pointing out that if you don't ONLY want to do easy pieces, you can pick a piece that takes you a few months. I learned the "Moonlight Sonata" over six months, for example, all while I did the easier pieces. And I had some harder pieces that I played for two months before I could record them. So feel free to mix it up.

At the end of 2017, I added 9 of my favorites to a "repertoire" list that I hope to maintain this year. That will be a new thing for me!

Here's my first recording of the year smile

I'm committed to recording the complete 2-part Bach Inventions this year though I already recorded 1, and 2 last year.

Honestly, I've been learning this piece on and off last year but only just got it to performance standard.

I'm still not completely satisfied with my trills but I hope you can enjoy it nontheless smile

Hi!
I'm new here and I'd like to join this challenge especially to improve my sight-reading and to learn to let go of the thought that every piece must be played perfectly.
So let's do it😊💕

P.S.: I came here because of PianoTV, she suggested this page in her newest video😊

@Melchiorblade7 That was nice lots of 16th notes that would probably make my fingers fall off great job smile Your trills sound good. Me I can't seem to keep them going for more than a couple of shakes which is something I need to work on myself. Thank you for the comment on the 19th Melody it felt like it took forever to get it to that point (don't ask how many recording takes it took I lost track after 10 :p) I might actually keep that one.

I'm working my way though that book and it's not surprising you've not heard it before because the only Le Couppey that people work on in that book is one of the melodies in C that's in abundance on YouTube. I've got 5 more pieces in that book and will be finished with it (technically there are 12 more after that some sort of supplemental pieces that came out way back when it was originally published I may try those I may not I don't know yet.)

Nice to see someone else going through the same pieces I'm working on right now. My plan for getting started on my 40 pieces so far is the Oscar Peterson Exercises and Minuets and Christopher Norton's Microjazz Collection. smile

If Oscar Peterson puts out a book aimed at people of my standard, I've got to have it. Hope you enjoy them.

QuinGold, Ralphiano, and bSharp(C)yclist,

Thank you for help!

I would then like to include River Flows in You by Yiruma as my first piece of the year (although apparently everyone learns this piece 😂). I'll post recordings later!

Pieces in Progress:
Invention No. 11 in G Minor - Bach
Dearly Beloved - Yoko Shimomura
Interstellar (Main Theme) - Arranged by Patrik Pietschmann

Hello! smile I am a new member (heard of your site from PianoTV too) and would like to join the 40 pieces a year challenge. I don`t have equipment to record my playing, but I guess I can just write which pieces I`m playing. The first piece of the year would be Chopin Waltz in A-minor. I have been playing this for a while now, but intend to finish by the end of this week. Although of course it is not perfect and at some point I will probably return to it to polish it even more, but for now I will let it rest a little bit.
I love playing piano and am already excited to participate in this challenge. smile

Please can you add me to the list.. I have created a list of all forty of the pieces. A mixture of Chopin preludes, Bach minuets and the entirety of Tchaikovsky's 'Album For The Young'.
I've been learning for a year and I really want to start tacking the piano much more seriously. It would be an ideal future career for me. I am only 15 so I don't know whether to invest yet.

The progress I make throughout this year will tell me.

Welcome!!! In addition to the 40 pieces per year, you might want to look at MOYD, Where you commit to sit at the piano bench every day, and to report any lapses. The information about this commitment is in the link below. Most of us find it highly motivating as we hate reporting that we have missed without a good reason

Here is an easy one to start off the year, and a composer I've never heard of before until a few days ago. I've been considering subscribing to Pianist Magazine. On pocketmags.com you can take a look at the interactive tablet sample they have available. This selection is in there, along with 3 others. It's an easy piece, but a good exercise for articulation as it says. I think I might get a subscription to the digital magazine.

I'll add a recording soon, most likely YouTube as opposed to SoundCloud. I think my minutes are running out. The sample online also has Sonatina in G (Attwood), Song Without Words (op 30, no 3) and an advance piece by Schumann. I think I might do the Attwood piece also, Mendelssohn .. maybe - that looks really challenging. The Schumann piece .. not anytime soon smile

Hi, I’m new to the forum (came via piano TV) and I’d very much like to join. I’ve just resumed lessons after a four-year break and hope to use this challenge for some light relief from the harder (for me!) pieces I’ll be working on with my teacher. Looking forward to playing some easy Tchaikovsky, Schumann and Burgmuller, and perhaps the odd bit of film music as well. Excited to join you all!

This is a great idea, I've been stuck in a rut for the last year, mostly due to life happening. Be nice to get some consistent practice, progression and better sight reading. I'm going by PianoTV's (youtube channel) suggestion, in that getting to about 80%-90% of piece completion and moving onto the next. Sign my up for the 2018 challenge please smile

This will be number 1 of 40: Sonatina in A Minor (George Anton Benda)
(warts and all)

I'm going to be adding this to my repertoire throughout the year, but this is a decent starting point for this piece, for me

I know from watching the video where the majority of the mistakes are: upper mordant timing / rhythm (triplet); generally sloppy rhythm throughout the piece; some bad fingering; more polish on dynamics; completely missed the tied 'D' note between bars 9 to 10.

But I'm generally happy to get one in the bag, more progress so far than 6 months of last year lol.
I'm also going to be filling them all for my youtube channel, so I have a retrospective at the end of the year, to see how far I've come.

Take care, comb your hair.

ZDM

River Flows in You - Yiruma (as promised). Not that great, but it's a good start to the year I think.

Pieces in Progress:
Invention No. 11 in G Minor - Bach
Dearly Beloved - Yoko Shimomura
Interstellar (Main Theme) - Arranged by Patrik Pietschmann

I’m planning on using Christopher Norton’s Connections series starting with Book 1. There are some fun tunes in there. And even those in book 1 can be challenging for me. You can get all the mp3 files online at the Royal Conservatory site. There are 4 tracks with accompaniment and practice/performance speeds.

Coming back after a long while.

Please sign me up, first time for me. I just started playing piano in April 2017, building on what remains from couple of years of lessons more than half a century ago, the Alfred Teach Yourself Adult Book 1, weekly lessons, and a growing library of “aspirational” sheet music.

This week and next, I will be polishing Martha Mier’s “Just Struttin’ Along” and the arrangement of Harold Arlen’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from the Alfred book, to play at my teacher’s January recital (my first recital since about 1964!). I am almost certain to be older than the parents of her other students; I’m hoping at least to set a good example of persistence and enjoyment!

Might be time to figure out how to record and upload. My first new piece of the year is by Arvo Pärt: “Für Alina.”

Hello! I'm also knew, coming from PianoTV, and would love to join the 40 pieces a year challenge! I have already learnt a couple pieces since the beginning of the year so here they are:

Für Elise (Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor) WoO 59 - Beethoven
Sonata 20 op. 49 no. 2 mvt 1 (still working on the second movement) - Beethoven
Nocturne op. 9 no. 2 in E flat major - Chopin

I will keep you up to date on what pieces I have been learning. I am not quite sure if I will get to 40 pieces this year but we shall see!

Happy playing

Hi mom3gram , one of my goals is to get through ALFRED's BK 2 before June. I started in June 2016 (but I took a diversion and completed BK 1 during that time). Any who, I watched the fellow on "Let's Play Piano Method" and he recommended people go through their method books several times. Good to hear from you. Birdgolf

Hello,
I am new to this community because I would like to join this challenge. As an adult beginner, my pieces will be very tiny, but I do very much like the idea and definitely want to give it a try. I have managed one piece this year. smile It is called "Mazurka (Erinnerung)" by Alexander Gretschaninow. It is from the Russian Piano School (the first volume). I hope to play some pieces from this book. I will not record, though as I do not have the technical opportunities and it would cost time.

Could you please subscribe me?

Hi everyone,
I have my first piece for the challenge done - this is from Tim Richards' book "Improvising Blues Piano" which I am aiming to work from quite a bit this year, along with more standard learning from sheets.
I'm currently working on Debussy's Arabesque, Piazzolla's Milonga del Angel, a couple of Irish Trad waltzes which I will hopefully submit to the waltz recital in a couple of months, and various other things. But in keeping with this challenge I aim to tackle something new pretty much every week. I don't necessarily intend to record them all, but I do find it helps to keep me honest!
The first section (repeated at the end) is from the page, the middle section is meant to be RH improv over the same LH pattern. You can hear that it's a bit shaky in comparison.

This is great! I am planning on doing the same. The reviews for the book have been very positive. Hoping to add improv to my practice routine. I look forward to hearing your progress.

Here's entry #1, I'm self taught so figure best way to motivate is to take exams - this is one of the pieces I'm playing for Grade 1 exam in June.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Eo84Ku22NV1_PtNOFMP9PEOSKgVuUqxd/view

First time recording and hearing myself subjectively, the MIDI software I'm using doesn't capture dynamics well but it's a start grin

I'd like to join too! I took piano lessons from age six till I started university and it has been a few years since I have been practising regularly. This looks like a great challenge for me to get back into it and to challenge me to learn a variety of different pieces. I am also here from pianotv's video.

I'm doing the Paul Harris Piece A Week. Starting in the Grade 1 book as my son and I are doing it together for motivation. I'm already in a few weeks, but I'll start with last weeks piece:

- Pony Ride

Instruments: Yamaha CLP-685, Kawai ES110
Pieces In Progress:
  • Chopin Waltz in A minor Poshumous (almost performance ready)
  • Chopin Mazurka in B flat Major Op 7 (very much W.I.P.)
  • Beethoven "Easy Sonata" 20 No. 2 (just started)

A couple of updates

#2 - There are several other pieces in this book I think I can do for this challenge. It's really my first Beethoven piece, although I've played around with the beginning part of Fur Elise. This week I'll be working on Country Dance in G Major.
#3 - I started working on this last year. I hope to be able to do it for the February recital. The backup is Sonatina in G Major by Clementi #2, 3rd movement smile

1. Study in C (Op. 65, No. 3) - Albert Loeschhorn - Pianist Magazine
2. Écossaise (WoO 23) - Beethoven - Masterwork Classics Lvl 3
3. Nuvole Bianche - Ludovico Einaudi - Essential Einaudi (Islands)

Hey everyone, hope the playing is going well smile
I'm curious, how do people choose what they are going to play next and where to find the pieces? I've personally being using the RCM syllabus.
Also, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a varied collection of RCM grade 6/7 level music (I'm a big fan of Chopin) as that's where I feel I can comfortably learn at this pace right now.

Here's an update with where I am:

1. Prelude in A major (Op. 28 No. 7) - Chopin
2. Lustig und Traurig (WoO 54) - Beethoven

I don’t have an anthology that includes Chopin Grade 6, But have you seen pianosyllabus.com? you can filter for composer and grade. They list 55 Chopin grade 6
http://www.pianosyllabus.com/default.php

You can get all the scores on IMSLP.org

"Music, rich, full of feeling, not soulless, is like a crystal on which the sun falls and brings forth from it a whole rainbow" - F. Chopin

1. Autumn Ballade, from Faber lesson book 5. Not terribly difficult but still lovely!

2. Jazz Fantasy on the Turkish March, by Fazil Say. I've been working on this one for about two months. It has a lot of complicated fingering and I'm definitely not up to the speed that Say plays it at, but it's a lot of fun and I think I've finally gotten it up to performance level.

@Zephyx Most of the pieces I have come from the imslp site. I looked online for a resource for pieces that are grade 1 and went from there. I still have quite a few left in my binder on my piano that I'd like to get to during this challenge so we'll see how that goes.

I've gotten my February recital piece memorized (we'll see how much I remember after being about 20 hours away from it) now I just need to work on dynamics and tempo.

Hi everyone! I'm from Fortaleza, Brazil, and I got here from PianoTV, also. I've just started taking lessons after 2 years of self-teaching and I think this challenge could really help me boost some skills along with my teacher's directions. So, sign me up!

Since the beginning of the year, I'm finishing polishing Bach's Prelude in C minor (BWV 999) and I've started learning Mozart's Fantasia in D minor (K. 397).

That's all for now. Let's rock (or classic, or ragtime, or jazz, or whatever lol)!

Hey Zephyx, I follow some channels on YouTube where I get most of my ideas of pieces to learn. My favourites are Paul Barton, The Great Repertoire and pianoREADER. I save their videos on some personal playlists, separating them by pieces I could try now and pieces that I know I won't be able to play yet. From there, I get the sheets from IMSLP.org.

Hope this helps!

Danziato - Glad you found us! Welcome to Piano World and the 40 Pieces Club!

----
To everyone:
Just as a reminder, I do attempt to keep a running count of progress as we move through the year (second post of this thread).
As you list your new pieces for the challenge, it would help me if you would also list the number you have completed. Many
keep a running list of their pieces which grows as the months pass. It does not matter how you do it, but I would appreciate
including your count with each update. Thanks!

A great YouTube resource is Un of Iowa pedagogy project. You can find professional performances pieces at all grade levels

I've been looking around on the sites mentioned here to find a song and I clicked on something new for me.It's an easy short piece from Handel. I think I might learn that one.
Maybe someone else here doesn't know what to choos from either. I used Piano Syllabus, Searched for grade 1 with a random number for the ID. That will show you some songs of that grade.

No I haven't seen PianoSyllabus.com - that's super useful; thank you! It's odd that it lists multiple entries for the same piece in the search results. It's probably something coded on the back-end that does that.
With regards to IMSLP, how do I find music with fingerings? I'm not at the point yet where I can easily come up with my own fingerings so that's been a challenge using the scores there. Should I just work on figuring out fingerings? I just feel like that's not something I want to invest my time in yet but I'm open to trying it out.

@danziato Thanks for the suggestions! I've heard a few of Paul Barton's interpretations - they're good stuff! And I also have playlists like you for songs I "think" I can play and songs I can't currently easily learn but would like to eventually. I just need to actually update them so thanks for the reminder.

@dogperson Ah I remember this YouTube channel from some of their Burgmuller videos! I'll check out some of their other videos too. Also, do you know how IMTA levels correlate to other rating systems like ABRSM/RCM? They use letters from A to F but from what I can tell, their practice exams are mostly theory based so I'm not entirely sure how to gauge the difficulty of pieces on theory alone.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Funnily enough, one of my main hurdles to "playing" the piano is just actually getting in my hands the sheet music I want to play. Going forward, I hope that hurdle won't be much of a bother anymore thanks to all your help.

Some of the pieces will come with fingering suggestions but a lot don't or there will be certain parts of a score that will have it some places but not in others. You can preview the scores on the IMSLP site before downloading to see if it has them or not.

Sometimes I'll try to use the suggested fingerings but a lot of the times for me it won't work. I've got small hands and not enough reach so some of the suggestions are a little awkward for me to do so I end up figuring out what works best for me.

Second piece! I'm not recording this as it's a bit boring, an exercise rather than a piece really. But I'm claiming it anyway smile

Quick Update:

I have completed Chopin's Prelude Op.28 No.20 in C Minor. I love this piece, it is so deep and dark and furious.

And I have also made my way through Edvard Grieg - Lyric Pieces Book 1, op.12 no.3 - Watchman's Song.

Please give me some recommendations, would love to expand my repertoire!

Happy playing!

It depends a lot on what you would like to learn and what you like. Is there a certain genre that you're interested in(baroque, romantic, rag, jazz, blues, etc.)? Are you looking for things below, at or above your level of playing? Is there a certain technique you would like to learn. There's just sooooo much stuff out there which makes it extremely difficult to pick one and run with it...it's nearly endless.

I've got so many things already printed out from a variety of books and composers that I can't decide either which one I want to work on. 3 Tchaikovsky pieces, 2 Purcell, a few from ABC du Piano, a few from Maylath Grade 1 Book 1, John Lennon, Styx, Journey and 2 out of my league Beethoven pieces.

01 Canope - Debussy, from Preludes Book 2 - Youtube

Probably should have waited a little longer before recording it but I just wanted to get one on the board. wink I'm looking to get through at least twelve of the preludes this year, and I've never listened to a performance of any of them so it's all directly interpreted from the sheet music, which is a great experience.

I also feel a bit of a fraud for posting in the beginners forum because, while I only picked up piano again last year, I had my first lesson 30 years ago and have played a few other instruments since then! Wanted to use this thread to track my progress though. Some nice recordings posted so far.

Don't worry at all, the ABF subforum is most definitely for beginners AND returners, and very much a "beginners and beyond" group. There are some really exceptional players who post regularly and take part in our online recitals, as well as the absolute beginners and those of us somewhere in between. All are welcome, all belong!

Please don't feel that way. As barbaram mentioned this forum is for all adult learners, including those with many years of learning. Sharing of your performances and practice experience is invaluable. I would encourage you, and others, to participate in the upcoming recital. There are many that have been playing for 30+ years that participate ... it's inspiring and fun.

I know a lot of the rules are up to each individual, but is there a certain standard we should set for ourselves when choosing pieces to learn? For instance, I learned Hedwig's Theme from Harry Potter about 5 days ago for fun, but it really only took me a couple hours to master it and I would definitely consider it below my level. Should I include this or not? Thank you!

I think you should, yes. The entire goal of this challenge is to learn more of the relatively easy material.

Yes I would count it.

One of my goals this year for the challenge is to learn a piece and record it within 24 hours (this is only for a few throughout the year, not for all forty). That means the piece is going to be well below my level (whatever that means). But my goal is to learn to quickly take a piece of music and turn it into something without overthinking it.

This challenge is not necessarily about creating a repertoire of forty pieces at your level. I think that would be very difficult for most. The idea is to experience a varied set of music than you would otherwise. Most doing this challenge will include different levels of music and finished to a varied degree of completion (tempo, dynamics, etc).

Just keep moving, just keep playing.

Just checking in. Still working on my recital piece. I can play it and I know where the dynamics go just one or two bars trip me up and a few hesitations here and there but it's coming along.

A couple of people mentioned Pianist magazine earlier, and I do recommend it. Their 100th issue is coming out at the end of January. Their digital issues are sold via PocketMags, and they also have a very nice iPad app.

PocketMags has a mega sale ending today so worth subscribing before it ends: Sub is $24.99, 40% off!

My second piece of the year is Bach Minuet in F, from Anna Magdalena Bach`s notebook (BWV Anh 113). I finished it today and tomorrow will start learning a new piece. This time something different - a song from a church hymn book called "God bless our souls."

Officially completed my first piece of the challenge (with a bunch more on the go):

Bach: Little Prelude in C major, BWV 924

I'm focusing on intermediate level Baroque and Classical music this year, since that's my major weakness. So far so good - I love Bach! Hoping to get through all of his preludes this year.
