Yes, they count. Go for it!

Just joined Piano World Forum and would love to join this "40 Pieces a Year Club." Special thanks to Allysia from PianoTV for suggesting this and to Medden for posting some moving yet approachable pieces.

Restarting piano as an adult after ~20 years off. The first two pieces I've learned this year are:

1. Carl Maria von Weber - Scherzo
2. Max Richter - Horizon Variations

Yes, of course they count - if you want them to! The trick is that there are no "rules" - you make up the "challenge" to fit your situation.

As you learn more, the pieces will get progressively harder. Some people have a few easier ones on the go (they may take a week to get right) as well as one or two that take a lot longer; they don't all have to be the same level.

I am finally done with my first piece. I'm a slow learner, I guess. But thanks to this challenge I'm practicing a lot more than I would usually do. smile

Thanks ZoeCalgary, mine are very unfinished and rough, but for me the point of this challenge is discovering new styles, and improving my sight reading.

6.Tchaikovsky- Old French Song
7.A little dance - Kabalevsky Op 39-9

Hi,

I have now only finished the second piece:

1) "Mazurka (Erinnerung)" by Alexander Gretschaninow
2) "Allegro" Mozart KV 3

There is a piece of the 'Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach' that I am currently working on and which is not easy for me.

Another good week of practicing. I started 3 more grade 2 pieces and 2 of them are good enough to move on from, the third I just need to work on speed. My teacher feels that if I can learn 2 pieces a week then it is time to move to RCM grade 3. My teacher picked me an easy grade 3 piece, and we also chose a grade 2 piece to ease into it. As proud as I am to move up to grade 3 I am someone who doesn't like to challenge myself with piano, I just enjoy it more when it's easier!

1) E Dorian with Modulation, Robert D. Vandall, RCM Grade 2
2) Colors of the Wind, Really Easy Piano
3) The Wind, Chee-Hwa Tan, RCM Grade 2
4) Quiet Lagoon, Jon George, RCM Grade 2

Please do jump in, JimZipCode! I was also hesitant, thinking that this was something for those more advanced than me. But... it actually was developed to help beginners like us get better quicker. Have a look at the articles linked in the first post of this thread... so it is. Also, Allysia's advocacy, which has drawn many to this challenge this year: http://www.pianotv.net/2018/01/40-pieces-a-year-club-piano/.

Welcome and well met! 3hearts

Very nice. The Christopher Norton Connection series is much fun. I love that they come with the backing tracks. Fun to play along.

1. Pony Ride (Harris Piece A Week Grade 1) 1/1
2. Tick Tock (Harris Piece A Week Grade 1) 1/8
3. Floating Candles (Harris Piece A Week Grade 1) 1/15
4. Robots (Harris Piece A Week Grade 1) 1/22
5. Burgmuller 25 Progressive Pieces Op 100 No. 1 "Sincerity" 1/24
6. Magic Dust (Harris Piece A Week Grade 1) 1/29
7. Burgmuller 25 Progressive Pieces Op 100 No. 2 "Arabesque" 1/29

Continuing the Paul Harris Piece A Week Grade One with my son, and adding in the Burgmuller progressive pieces. #2 is a good challenge for my sight reading as I'm still struggling with sight reading chords, so this is great practice (I'm also doing the Paul Harris grade 4 sight reading which introduces two note chords, so this is a nice addition as I have a week to get it.)

Thanks Scorpio, for an otherwise thankless job of combing through entries to update the list. And welcome new challengers! So great to see the popularity of this idea, it's definitely encouraging me to stick with it.

Glad you are enjoying my efforts. I tend to prefer the movie style pieces personally, but most are very difficult.

Thanks Scorpio. Yes the backing tracks are quite nice. I didn’t use the Christopher Norton backing track in this instance. I was using an iPad app with basic drum beats.

Coming back after a long while.

Yeah, Allysia's post was what guided me here. I really enjoy her blog & videos.

And:

2. "Mary Ann" from Alfred book 1
3. "Non più andrai" (simplified) from Figaro by Mozart, arrangement by Allysia PianoTV (aka "From Now On")
4. "What Can I Share" from Alfred book 1

...all as of this week's class, Jan 31.

I'm not quite satisfied with "When the Saints Go Marching In" yet, even though my teacher said we can move on. Holding that one for another few days.

The Mozart was fun. After a week of me practicing it, everyone in the house was humming it: me, my wife, my 8yo son. Da-do-dooo, da-do-dooo, da-da-dum-bump! Thanks Allysia.

I have finished learning my third piece which I surprisingly enjoyed after a week of playing. The recommended tempo (from the Adventures Book) is 124 bpm (Alegro), and this morning I successfully played it at 144 (Vivacissimo).

For me, this is a milestone!
