JoBert, your piano sounds great!

Zoe - Thank you! I don't know if I felt a whole lot of calmness recording it ;0

Since others have brought up Burgmüller, I would say the pieces are challenging. At least to play them the way my teacher expects them to be played. I still go back and work on Arabesque, particularly the left hand and make those 16ths notes even and not blurry.

SwissMS I listened to this piece a few times now. I really liked the middle section. It does get chaotic doesn’t it! I really liked it and it was neat to see the video of you playing such a complex piece.

Yet more from "Improvising Blues Piano". I'm not exactly reaping the "variety" benefit from the challenge!
This one is not at tempo - I forget if I recorded it at 100 or 108bpm but either way it is well short of the 120bpm suggested. However, time to move on. I'm going to skip to the next chapter now, a perfectly reasonable approach according to the author. All these pieces have been triad based, the next chapter is Sixths.

2. New Orleans Triplet Workout - Tim Richards
3. Five Finger Blues - Tim Richards

08 Lullaby of Birdland - George Shearing - Youtube - Another jazz tune for the Reddit piano jam, will probably be doing one of these a month this year which will be over a quarter of the 40 pieces, which helps! I wasn't feeling it while trying to do this in a traditional swing style, so ended up with a hip-hop version via a latin-esque intermediary jam. Still not 100% happy on the execution of it, but it was worth it for the funky lick at 2m20s. smile

07 Danseuses de Delphes - Debussy, from Preludes Book 1 - Youtube - Lots of chords in this - maybe a bit of over-pedalling in the middle but I think it's meant to have a feeling of bells (bells, always with the bells) which apparently is what the major-2nd-with-octaves intervals represent. And it's brought back under control with the pp and ppp sections before the ending.

The arm drop at the end is what I use to indicate a good take so I can see it straight away when I look at the audio waveform later on - for some reason it seemed appropriate to keep it in for this tune. smile

Hi BitSpirit. I just had a listen at many of your pieces. My favourites were Schaum as they sound so fun and look fun to play. I’m not familiar with Shaum I will have to look more into their work. Thanks for sharing!

A friend passed on some old copies of Pianist magazine, and all three of my latest pieces came from issue 93. They are all gems, and come from collections composed for children - I'm going to explore these further.

6. Nielsen, En lille langsom Vals (a little, slow waltz), op.11 no.3 - technically the easiest of this week's three but the harmonies are so unexpected that it took me quite a while to learn it.
5. Granados, La Mendiga (The little beggar girl), from "Stories for the young". Very poignant, with contrasting moods.
4. Mendelssohn, Kinderstuck op.72 no.1 - a charming song without words
3. Harburg and Arlen, Over the Rainbow
2. Mark Tanner, Zebra Crossing (Pianist magazine no.90)
1. Satie, Gnossienne no.3

Nice pieces, Malone, and thanks for the chuckle - I did a double take at your #4, because "Kinderstuck" means "children stucco" and I had to think a moment about what the heck that piece would be about! laugh
Tip: if you don't have the ü, the valid replacement is "ue" -> Kinderstueck ("children piece").

Your performance of Danseuses de Delphes is simply masterful. As an admirer of Debussy's music, you really do it justice. Also, your idea of creating a distinct audio waveform after a good take is a good idea that I may try next time (usually I have to sift through similar takes to find the good ones).

Wow thank you, I didn't expect feedback comments on this thread but that's made my night. smile I'm working my way through the preludes just by using the sheet music, so I'd never actually heard that piece performed by anyone else until after I'd recorded it. It really makes me pay attention to dynamics markings, and after playing Canope and Neige it got me used to really going for a very soft pp and ppp, which is maybe what you're picking up on as I get the impression I play these pieces with less rubato than other people might.

Anyway, I'm aiming for 12+ preludes this year plus maybe a few other Debussy pieces so stay tuned. smile

Hi ZoeCalgary. Thanks for listening smile I really like the two Rhythm and Blues books from Schaum. The pieces are relatively short and so far all I played were great fun to learn and play.

Here’s my “learned” list from February. Finishing off the Jazzin' Americana book plus added a little classical dance for variety (another one that started as a sightreading exercise!).

I’m also working my way through the Exploring Blues Piano book and enjoying it a lot. So far the exercises have been easy enough that I’m not counting them; maybe later when they get more difficult.

PLAYLIST: [Soundcloud]
* I haven’t recorded the new ones yet. I’m expecting delivery of my new piano tomorrow, and am in process of cleaning out my “piano corner”. Will record next week.

01. Samuil Maykapar – Waltz, Op. 28, No. 5 from Essential Keyboard Repertoire, Volume 2 (Alfred Publishing) [Soundcloud]
02. Wynn-Anne Rossi – Super Stomp Rag (piano with SFX) (JA1) [Soundcloud]
03. Wynn-Anne Rossi – In the Hall of the Jazz Kings (JA1) [Soundcloud]
04. Wynn-Anne Rossi – Practice the Piano Blues (JA1) [Soundcloud]
05. Wynn-Anne Rossi – Bird in the Bebop (JA1) [Soundcloud]
06. Wynn-Anne Rossi – California Cool (JA1)
07. Wynn-Anne Rossi – Jazzy Classic (JA1)
08. Wynn-Anne Rossi – Battle in Carnegie Hall (JA1)
09. Wynn-Anne Rossi – Metamophic Rock (JA1)
10. Denes Agay – Bouffons (Gigue) from Petit Trianon Suite.

JA1 = Jazzin’ Americana Book 1 (Alfred Publishing). Nice little book (9 pieces total, representing various styles). I like that there’s a helpful tip at the beginning of each piece called “Rhythm Workshop”, showing how the rhythm plays out between the left and right hands.

Here is a little jazz piece for my list. This was a good rhythmic challenge, because the rhythm in each hand is different, and a lot is off beat. You can probably hear me counting in places! He wrote the piece for his 12 year old granddaughter to play.

So my list now is:
1. Telfer -(Celebration Series 5)When Rivers Flowed on Mars
2. Heller - (Masterworks Classics 5)Etude in C Major
3. Chopin - (Celebration series 8)Prelude in B Minor op. 28 #6
4. Astor - Valses Venuzuelos # 1 Adriana ABRSM selections grade 8 2017-2018 Adriana
5. Scarlatti -(ABRSM grade 4)Scarlatti Sonata in D Minor K34
6. Kalinnikov - (Celebration Series RCM 8) Chansom Triste
7. Kember - (ABRSM grade 2 2011-2012) Bah-ba-doo-bah
8. Handel - (ABRSM Selections Grade 3 2017-2018) Sonatina in G "Fugue"
9. Darius Brubeck - (ABRSM Selections Grade 5 2013-2014) For Lydia

1. Bach - Invention No. 3
2. Bach - Invention No. 4
3. Mitsuda - Another Guldove
4. Bach Chorale No. 174
5. Bach - Invention No. 5
6. Bach - Invention No. 6
7. Hamauzu - Aqua Memory
This one's largely obscure and unknown; a masterpiece that deserves to be heard more imo

8 Bach - Invention No. 7
Still continuing the inventions. This one was fun to figure out

Finally, some pieces that are *not* from Tim Richards' Blues book :-)
Irish traditional music is famous for its jigs and reels, and while waltzes are a more recent import they became a firmly established style within the tradition. So when the waltz recital was announced, I went looking for some in the trad style to learn and contribute. I'm not sure these are entirely authentic, but they are nice little pieces, fairly simple and not too onerous to learn.

Links to follow when the Waltz Recital goes live.

1. Blue Third Blues - Tim Richards
2. New Orleans Triplet Workout - Tim Richards
3. Five Finger Blues - Tim Richards
4. On-Off Boogie - Tim Richards
5. Happy Blues - Tim Richards
6. Keegan's Waltz - Trad Irish
7. Favourite Irish Waltz - J. Bellak

My first update! These are what I learnt during Feb.

-----------------------------------Feb 2018----------------------------------
1. Robots - Anne Crosby Gaudet, RCM Level 1
2. Bears - Linda Niamath, RCM Level 1
3. Ecossaise in E flat Major - Ludwig van Beethoven, RCM Level 1
4. Lost - Elissa Milne, RCM Level 1
5. Menuet - Christian Petzold, BWV Anhang 114
6. Menuet - Christian Petzold, BWV Anhang 115
7. Czerny Op.599 1-16

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll just count Czerny as one every month since my teacher let me treat them as finger exercises.

By the way, is it OK to update in the same post with bold font or should I post a new one every time?
