That was nice. I find these so difficult. I've only ever done one and it was so difficult for me.

I should mention that I am just beginner standard.

Steven this was a really nice piece. I'd be very interested in hearing more from this book as I've not heard about this book before.

PD. Good luck to everyone on this challenge!

Hi Daniel. Your playing was beautiful. It took me a moment to realize you had your sheet music on your iPad. Can I ask what software you were using. I assume you were 'turning the page' when you were touching the screen. Thanks.

Medden, that was very peaceful,
PavelK. That was powerful.
Gallantly one of my all time favourite pieces!
Zappa, another of my all time favourites.

Thanks for sharing all the wonderful music.

Keselo and Medden you have been very busy. I just listened to all of your pieces. Nice!

Barbaram I also have the Tim Richards book. I have gotten through the first few pieces awhile ago. You have inspired me to get these out again and record them. They are quite fun to play once you get them under your fingers.

Is this book called "Improvising Blues Piano" by Tim Richards? I was going to get that next. I bought his "Exploring Jazz Piano 1" book but then I read the Amazon reviews and people recommend doing his Blues book first.

Yes, it is! Like you I first bought Exploring Jazz Piano, and never really did much with it, then bought this one as so many have recommended. I didn't do much with it either for a good while. Needless to say it's not a magic bullet and unless you put a lot of work in it won't get you far. So the lightbulb moment for me was linking it with this challenge, and so far so good.
I think it's still going to be a leap to get from playing these pieces (even with the improv sections) to properly "improvising blues piano", but I'm aiming to stick with it for a while, and we'll see where I get.

Thanks! I'll be starting it in a week or two. I'm making my way home from the NAMM show in CA where I spent hours at Hal Leonard and Alfred Music looking through their sheet music, particularly the Jazz and Blues books. There are so many to choose from! Some have just pages of chords, or pages of licks, but some have a really great combination of tutorials followed by examples of jazz "standards". I also like the ones that have Audio included where they give you the "band" to play and improvize with!

I will have to be careful of buying too many at once and being overwhelmed, as I already have quite a few (it's the old "if I only had more colors I would be a better painter" syndrome...)

I listened before to nearly all the pieces posted in the first couple of pages, but never got around to posting to say how much I enjoyed them - so if that was you. please accept my compliments even if they are a bit generic smile
Working from the end I've just listened to Medden, Keselo and colorsofsound's pieces, and enjoyed them a lot, well done.

I'm not even going to try to listen to all the postings, but it's lovely to dip in a listen to some from time to time, and often discover some great new composers. And it's great too to share everyone's successes, whether or not you post recordings here!

Thanks to those who have made friendly comments about my own postings too.

Piece 2 of 40 -- 5% done already!

"Just Stridin' Along" by Martha Mier.

I also get to tick off "learn to do recordings" from my goals for the year, yay! I think I spent more time doing that than I did learning the piece. It took a surprising amount of time to figure out how to trim the bits off the video before and after the music and how to save the file for uploading. But anyway, I know how to do it now.

I'm really enjoying this thread and following everyone's progress. You are all inspiring!

Fifth Recording for this year: Scarlatti - Sonata in D Minor K34. I am using a new program that shows me the total time I have spent on a piece. This one took just under three hours, so a bit more than 20 minutes a day for a week. I am always slower with baroque music!

So my list now is:
1. Telfer -(Celebration Series 5)When Rivers Flowed on Mars
2. Heller - (Masterworks Classics 5)Etude in C Major
3. Chopin - (Celebration series 8)Prelude in B Minor op. 28 #6
4. Astor - Valses Venuzuelos # 1 Adriana ABRSM selections grade 8 2017-2018
(quarterly recital) I will add this link after the recital.
5. Scarlatti -(ABRSM grade 4)Scarlatti Sonata in D Minor K34

Count me in please! I’m new to piano and I started taking lessons last Oct. The books I’m currently learning are Czerny op. 599, RCM Celebration Series level 1 and Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. Thank you, scorpio.

Really enjoying your playing SwissMS. Gorgeous piano too!

The Chopin piece (Prelude in B minor op.28 #6) is beautiful; I was reminded that I had learned the left hand part last year when my right hand was bandaged up - and then I forgot to finish it when I had two hands again! Will add that to my list to finish!

I don't think I could be so organized as to track the time spent on a piece, but may I ask what the new program is? I might use it if it was on an iPad as I normally have mine nearby.

Thanks QuinGold! The B Minor prelude is going in my long term repertoire. The more I play it the more I get out of it!
The app that I have is Android only unfortunately. It is called "Music Diary". I used to use Music Journal on my iPad, until the developer stopped supporting it. So I resurrected an old Android pad that my husband used for development. It works great!

I'm a brand-new beginner, 52 yrs old, just had my second piano lesson last week.

Is it appropriate for me to join this challenge? I *love* the idea. But the "pieces" I'll be learning will be things like simplified "Jingle Bells", "Frere Jacques", little 2-line exercises, etc. Do those count?
