I’m learning it but I wouldn’t call myself a player yet.

Same here, taking blues/jazz lessons ... slowly but surely ...

Cool!

Suggestion: Listen to a lot of the music which you want to eventually play...

There is an old saying that "The Blues is caught, not taught", i.e. you internalize it by listening to it, so as you study it intellectually...it becomes real to you, part of your DNA...like learning a foreign language.

Best Wishes!

Yep, I consider my primarily a blues player. I completely agree with Rocket88. When it comes to playing and practise one of the first things I'd tell people (not that I'm a teacher) is to listen to what you want to play. And critically if you don't want to listen to it, then don't bother trying to play it, because clearly it doesn't reach you....

Cheers

Definition "Blues player": a musician who plays mostly blues, and earns with this for bread (probably ).

It's odd but I never consider the piano a great blues instrument - it either feels like jazz or boogie woogie to me, but that's coming from a guitar background and a LOT of blues is based around string bending and the 'blue note' halfway between the minor and major thirds, neither of which the piano can do. Which makes it strange how the Hammond works so well in blues because it can do neither of those things either...

GoldmanT, some other aspects to consider when comparing guitar to piano blues. just as the guitar has a range of timbres that can be varied by touch, both on the fretboard and by the pick/plucking hand, piano has a huge range controlled by the touch and strikes of the fingers. plenty of inflection potential without literally touching the strings and bending them -- a lot more strings get touched via the 88 hammers. the instruments are also tuned and tempered quite differently. pianists can use combinations of intervals and the resonant capability of the instrument to access the 'blue notes, chord or note repetitions/pulsations one means.

I'm not really even a piano player yet but my goal is to play the Blues. Otis Spann and Memphis Slim are my inspirations.

A lack of talent does not stop you from learning piano. It just takes longer and you have to work harder.

I’m still playing at it. The Chuck Leavell era of Allman Bros albums are in constant rotation.
