Pianoteq (acoustic piano)

AAS "Lounge Lizard" (EP's) (now on sale)

I have both, and could be biased.

If everyone agreed about which were best, there wouldn't be such a wide choice! There are many opinions about these, and many good choices, and just like most keyboard related stuff, no consensus about what is "best."

I haven't played enough different ones to even have what I'd consider to be a sufficiently informed opinion! That said, I'm quite happy with the XLN Addictive Keys Studio Grand, which is well-priced, too. And for Wurli, I like the one from Acoustic Samples.

The best Piano vst's in random order are:(after reading around all forums for very long)

Please don't take it to serious though......

Production grand 2
Garitan CFX
Ravenscroft
Vienna Imperial
Bechstein vst
Imperfect samples Fazioli and Walnut grand
Pianoteq 6 with add ons

Slightly below those :

Galaxy vintage D
Ivory American grand
Pearl grand
Wavesfactory Mercury
Acoustic Samples C7
The Grandeur NI
Keyscape Yamaha
Sonic Couture Hammersmith

A higly subjective list of piano vst's, but after reading so much i believe it has some merit.
Much more credible is the electric piano department :

Two stand outs for Rhodes that are indeed the current top of the class soundwise and playabiltiy wise:

Sonic Couture Canterbury suitcase
Scarbee 88eps

Only fractional below that the Keyscape package wich covers a whole lot of different Rhodes and electric piano's so it could easily be a person's number one choice.

Standout Wurlitzers :

Acoustic Samples Wurli

Sonic Couture Broken Wurli for a more exotic approach of sound sculpting

The Keyscape package again........

The Waves Wurli (Electric 200) is the best bang for the buck and can be bought for € 29,- which makes it a worthy contender for the top spots.

The list from pianistje is pretty good. Possibly, Galaxy vintage D, and Ivory American grand, belong in the first group, but don't take my word for it, as I own neither of these. I own the first two in the top group, and I feel they're both very good.

I've often wondered about the Wavesfactory Mercury, which has a nice sound, but the performance videos on YouTube, where it's used, can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Garritan CFX, Ravenscroft, Galaxy Vintage D, and Ivory American Concert Grand, on the other hand, are represented in countless videos.

Pearl Concert Grand has some playability issues, look for a review on YouTube from the user anothercrappypianist. The sound is wonderful though, no doubt about that.

What Addictive Keys Studio Grand is concerned, the price can't be beat in my case, as I got it for free with Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. Nice sound, fun to play with, but I wouldn't put it very high among the best. I think the deeply sampled libraries, like Garritan CFX, Bechstein Digital, and Production Grand 2, are deeply sampled for a reason.

Finally, I've found Reaper to be a very helpful tool when using virtual instruments. About a year ago, I didn't want anything to do with digital audio workstations (DAWs) and wanted to be able to do everything within the interface of the libraries. That is only possible with a few virtual instruments, the most notable examples being Pianoteq, and the Garritan CFX.

Now I sometimes mix two or more virtual instruments in Reaper. That way, I can make my own pianos, though I only recommend doing that with the smaller libraries. If you mix Garritan CFX and Production Grand 2, it puts a huge load on the computer's resources, especially the CPU, but also the disk. Still, it's possible with the smaller ones, and they sometimes complement each other.

I cannot agree with those rankings.

Production Grand 2 at the top? Hardly!

IS Fazioli in the top tier? Nope. It's decent, but I'm not that fond of it.

Vintage D and Grandeur are only in the second tier? NO!

Pianoteq sits above the line? For me it sits at the bottom of the Marianas Trench. (Until someone digs deeper to allow Pianoteq to drop still lower.)

Sonic Couture Hammersmith is at the bottom of the second tier. Well that's about right (so long as you dig a hole beneath for Pianoteq).

And what about the dozens (hundreds?) of others?

For ep : Keyscape and it's not even close (in my opinion).

For ap:

- Galaxy Vintage D: it's been a best seller for years since its release for a reason. A safe bet and a beautiful well balanced Steinway across all registers. Shoutout to Ivory American D as well hence it belongs to the same shelf!

- Garritan CFX : A pensively sampled piano that sings on the top and growls on the bottom. It's not a C7 it's a CFX, it's different than your typical Yamaha tone you're used to growing up but boy did the Garritan team do such a fine job sampling this beast.

- Ravenscroft 275: 'Once you go Ravenscroft, you never go back'. I'll leave at that and save myself typing 600,000 words of praise lol.

Disclaimer: i think that some of the pianos sounds on synthesizers and stage pianos sound and play better than pretty much every vsti. Examples : Kronos Steinway D and Nord Royal Grand 3D. But hey you only asked about 'software' so...

Funny post grin ( pianoteq), but let me elaborate a bit.......
Like i said and you may have missed ,it is not a top bottom list, but tier one and two in random order.
So the production grand 2 is NOT on top of the list , it's a mere contender in the first bracket.
I did put some thought in it though.......
The piano's in the top tier are wildly mentioned as THE number one choice vst by users who own several piano vst's.
Of course pianoteq is loved by many and hated by some, but the majority of OWNERS put it on top of their own piano vst's
The same apllies to the others in tier one with personal arguments of users with different taste and opinion....... of course
The Imperfect Samples may suffer from playabilty issues, but soundwise for certain genres it's pure Fazioli sound is a league of it's own according to owners who own a bunch of other piano vst's as well.

Let's take Galaxy vintage D as an example,...... almost everyone agrees it is a very good piano vst, but those who own it and happen to have a vst of the top tier also see it as slightly below their top tier piano vst..
Those who still claim Galaxy is their favorite piano are mostly those players who don't own or play a vst of the first category.
That is why Galaxy vintage D is a second tier piano vst which is still very much appreciated.

I only have the Garitan CFX and Hammersmith and know the NI piano's and Ivory bundles ver well.
I don't need another grand besides the CFX and concentrate on playing more lately... hopefully it pays off
