I am looking at this famous Swedish melody:

Country music os famous for the 1-5 alternating bass. This carol doesn't seem to allow that kind of bass pattern.

Bars 2-3 have G-D-G, then bars 3-4 have either C-D-G or A-D-G. This is one way to look at it (just doing what I find sounding natural).
This really excludes the 1-5 (country or polka bass) in the bass. Here I am just playing the tonic of each chord.
How would you have played this at a country christmas concert?

When I heard Silent night performed by Waylon and Jessie I couldn't tell what was country about it. Christmas carols won't give us a specific country feeling in most cases, right? Although we're having country musicians performing it?

xmas music (can be generic, completely secular, associated with the season not necessarily the specific religious holiday), xmas songs (includes pop music without any references, or only general and vague ones to religious traditions/beliefs), xmas carols(words contain specific mention of persons/deities/supernatural entities or events associated with religious traditions) mean somewhat different things. a diverse, mixed bag, encompassing many different historical period styles (including court music of the sixteenth century) or regions of the world, and country/pop arrangements will be compatible with some, not with others. in this instance the Swedish folk song chord progression is sufficiently different from conventions you're more accustomed to applying.

likely incompatible to a 'country style' chord progression as well, the 'carol of the bells ' is conventionally accepted as a xmas song, but it originated as a pagan new year song from the Ukraine.
