Thank you to all of the people who commented on my piece. I appreciate your thoughts and feedback and found your responses to be extremely motivating! smile

I have responded individually to everyone below with my comments inside ** I hope I got you all! Thank you again.

SwissMS:
Sonatina in G: I. Moderato Very nicely played, with the jaunty playfulness inherent in this piece. I like your phrasing and accurate articulation. Your balance between melody and accompaniment is perfect.

**Thank you. Glad to hear balance felt right -- I was really trying to bring out the right hand.**

Monica K.:
Lotus in Blue – Sonatina in G: 1. Moderato: I love your interpretation of this piece as reminiscent of the thrilling moments of early love before you know it’s reciprocated: There’s a joy there, but under control. Very well played, and congratulations on your AB Forum Recital debut!

**Thank you so much, Monica!**

Peyton:
Lotus in blue- I've always loved this piece. It's just so joyful and fun. You really keep it moving. Got my foot a tapping. Well played.

**Thank you. Foot tapping is always a good sign!**

UnderConstruction:
Lotus in Blue (Laura) - Sonatina in G: I. Moderato
Welcome back to the piano Laura. Being a returning adult myself, I also remember what got me to realise I really enjoyed playing the piano was picking up a simple piece and figuring out that I could learn it relatively well in about 30 minutes, and it actually sounded somewhat like music. Coincidentally, I also had a CLP 535, it was good to get some finger strength back. I enjoyed your piece, nicely played.

**Thank you so much. Glad to hear you are finding your way again with piano, too.**

piano_primo_1
Lotus in Blue (Laura) - Sonatina in G: I. Moderato Very well played and executed , very clean and crisp . Enjoyed the piano piece. Good work!

**Thank you. I am so glad the piece sounded clean. I played it so many times!!**

cmb13:
Lotus in Blue (Laura) - Sonatina in G: I. Moderato
Very nice, Laura, well done.

**Thank you, cmb13.**

Peterws:
Lovely steady work on this; it flows well, Laura. Perhaps you can give it a lift in places and lower it in others so that it kinda breathes a tad more?
**Thank you. And yes -- I can definitely work on "lift and lower" to give it more shape and life. Thanks for the suggestion.**

SMA55:
I used to play this piece, too, Laura. I enjoyed your performance of it. You played it very evenly and with a sure hand (or two, haha). Fine work.
**Thank you so much, SMA55!**

Pianoduck:
I love this! Accurate playing, and a well thought out description. You are clearly a creative interpreter of music.
**Thank you so very much. I worked on this quite extensively and really did try to give it my very best.**

Riddler:
Laura, welcome to the recitals. Well done. Played very much in the spirit of the formal dance, and executed flawlessly.
**Thank you so much, Riddler.**

Pianist685:
This is really, really, really good. I like your precise playing. You have posted a perfect rendition, worthy of a professional pianist (only one very, very, very minor thing could be improved but it is not worth mentioning as long as you are not planning to reach a professional level - besides, I have not reached that level either). With such talent you do not need a piano teacher, indeed.
**Awww, thank you! Piano study is always such a work in progress. Always so much more to learn. I may get a teacher again someday. But for now, self-study is working fine. Cheers and here's to both of us continuing to enjoy piano! Thank you for such lovely, encouraging comments.**

MarieJ:
You really nailed that piece, Laura - well done! (I hope you plan to submit the next movement in a forthcoming Recital.)
**Yes! I am working on that second movement. Thank you, MarieJ.**

MeganR
I learned this Sonatina also and really enjoyed it. You did a great job with it, enjoy your time with the second movement also!
**Thank you, MeganR. I am finding the second movement to be more challenging but it's lovely!**

Casinitaly:
Lotus in Blue (Laura) - Sonatina in G: I. Moderato This is a really sweet piece, and you really did it justice. If you loved learning the first movement you'll be enchanted with the Rondo! I can't wait to hear you play!
**Thank you. I am enjoying learning the 2nd movement, slowing down a bit with the holidays but still chugging!**

My next round of comments and "applause" on recital performers. You are all so good!!! =D

01. SMA55 (Shepherd Abrams) - Consolation No. 3
Oh! So beautifully and tenderly played. Definitely balm for the soul. You are talented and a fine interpreter of this beautiful piece. I loved those delicate, high, bell like notes at the end and the way you just let it fade.

02. MeganR - Sonatina in C Major Op 36 No 1 Such a great Sonatina. Nice attention to all of the little details and very clean playing / execution of classical style. Loved it! It truly is "happy-ifying!"

03. MarieJ - The Crane Dance - Haunting and lovely, played like a keepsake memory you always want to hold onto. Beautiful, delicate rendition.

04. Ralph L. - Auld Lang Syne (piano+keyboard) Nice arrangement, Ralph, of this favorite, nostalgic piece. I really liked the chorus effect you used toward the middle.

05. Whizbang (Chris) - Gladiolus Rag You sound so effortless when you play! Delightful, jovial, foot-tapping fun. I love the way you make some of the lines crescendo. Nuanced and effective. Joplin isn't easy -- you nailed this!

06. blackjack1777 - "Fur Elise" Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor (WoO 59, Bia 515) - Wow! You've done tremendously well in 3 years of study. I love your thoughts on the piece. I agree there is an overall feeling of sadness to "Fur Elise with moments of anxiety and tension. You definitely brought that out. Wonderful job shaping the quieter moments, too. Lovely, expressive playing.

07. earlofmar - Invention No 3 - Wow! Great realization of this Bach invention. You really brought out the different voices and the whole thing has a very fluid feel.

08. wouter79 - Album for the Young (after Schumann), "Italian song" Op. 39, No. 15 Delightful playing. What a great way to work on polishing your technique with these pieces. I really look forward to more pieces from you.

09. Pianist685 (Constantin) - Etude Op. 45 No. 15, "Warrior's Song" - Lots of tension in this piece, which you brought out. Nice handling of those big (challenging to play) chords. Well executed.

[b]10. SwissMS/Doris - Qing Ge (Love Song)
- What a wonderful dusty chestnut of a piece. I love your selection. I can definitely hear the influences of east and west. Wonderful blending of the notes and chords and especially nice use of pedaling.

11. Jerzyk19 - What A Wonderful World - This one hit me and my eyes filled up within the first couple of measures! Touching arrangement and such a fluid handling of it. 14 months! You have made terrific progress in short time.

41. peterws - Novelette 1 in C I am glad (sort of) to know that I am not the only one to use salty language when I'm of the belief that things are not going my way. smile Loved this piece and it ended up reminding me of a day gone by when I was in a chorale group that did something Poulenc and now I'm going to spend some time finding out what that was, which sounds altogether a pleasant task.

42. Schin L - Nocturne op.9 no.2 You are off to a great start on your piano return! And you tackled Chopin out the gate, so impressed.

43. joangolfing - March BVW Anhang 122 Gosh, great job playing this piece without peeking!

45. Kalos Piano - The Clear Stream What a fun bubbling piece, so much energy!

46. Fouyaut - Fugue op. 35 no.2 So glad you continued to work on this piece on your own. I expect many of us know the feeling of being moved to tears by something we are playing (I'm working on one of those right now)

47. Ralphiano (Ralph) - La Poupee (The Doll) I really enjoyed this piece - and, your description of your work on it was thought-provoking and inspiring.

48. Piano_Primo - Chopin Nocturne Op. 9 No. 1 in B flat minor.Shortened Version, 2. Bach Choral BWV 514 Oh, I especially enjoyed the Chorale! Loved the hymn-like tempo!

49. UnderConstruction - Debussy - Arabesque 1 What a lovely piece, yay you for getting it in under the wire!

I blame my Irish inheritance, Megan . . . .and your excuse? smile
Thx for the comment. I never heard of Poulenc until I listened to this from the French Recital. Magic! But hard on the head . . . .

39. lvojnovic - Prelude 1913 Clearly from other comments, most of us have never had the opportunity of hearing this before. Thank you for introducing me to this unusual piece - and for your delicate, expressive interpretation.

40. Michiyo-Fir (Jade) - 12 Variations on Ah! Vous dirai-je Maman K.265 That *was* fun to listen to, and obviously fun for you too - brilliantly played!

41. peterws - Novelette 1 in C Just beautiful! (Reading about your challenges before listening to this, I was totally unprepared for such a delightful experience - you should be far more than ‘quite happy wi the general result’! ) And to me, your Pianoteq settings are just right for this special piece.

42. Schin L - Nocturne op.9 no.2 Congratulations - what a great result for 3 months’ work after no piano for 15 years. (Looks like you’ve also discovered the Ultimate Revealer - learning from listening to your own recordings. The advantages of the Digital Age!)

43. joangolfing - March BVW Anhang 122 Your submission was inspiring - so it *is* possible to sight-read a whole piece successfully without looking at the keys. Well done!

Thanks a lot Peter. Yes, it's the Bluethner model in Pianoteq. It is indeed starting to get fun, but also really intimidating to work on more difficult pieces.

And thanks to everybody for listening, commenting, and participating. Lots of excellent playing! thumb

44. Richard (zrtf90) - Asturias (Leyenda) (Choosing the least disruptive set of flaws - how that resonated with me!) This is one of my all-time favourite guitar pieces, and how wonderfully you translated it into a fabulous piano recital. Bravo!

45. Kalos Piano - The Clear Stream I’ve only previously heard a slow version of this one, so the tempo was a really pleasant surprise. Nice work!

46. Fouyaut - Fugue op. 35 no.2 I hope the pieces your teacher *does* like are ones that really suit you, too. That was excellent, and I’m very glad that you didn’t just shelve it in response to her lack of interest.

47. Ralphiano (Ralph) - La Poupee (The Doll) Finding pieces that you really love represents more than half the battle for the self-taught! And then finding motivation to keep polishing them - which is where the quarterly Recitals are *so* valuable. Your hard work has paid off - that was bright, happy and thoroughly enjoyable.

48. Piano_Primo - Chopin Nocturne Op. 9 No. 1 in B flat minor.Shortened Version, 2. Bach Choral BWV 514 Very well done - I enjoyed both pieces, and thought the pace sounded fine.

49. UnderConstruction - Debussy - Arabesque 1 I think one of the really inspiring things about these Recitals is the fact that many members submit works-in-progress. If this isn’t ‘near ready’, then I’m *really* looking forward to a future performance. Congratulations on your magnificent new piano, on a lovely piece, and for just making the deadline.

my first batch:

02. MeganR - Sonatina in C Major Op 36 No 1
as you said, that first movement is slower than usual but everythin's very clear and precise

03. MarieJ - The Crane Dance
lovely piece that I had never heard before, delicate touch and nice dynamics

05. Whizbang (Chris) - Gladiolus Rag
beautiful rag, excellently played at the perfect tempo

06. blackjack1777 - "Fur Elise" Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor (WoO 59, Bia 515)
I believe some more work can be done on the dynamics and on the evenness in certain sections but all in all it's well played and every note is at the right place

07. earlofmar - Invention No 3
I know very well that learning this piece can be quite a pain. You did well, I think now you just need to smooth down certain parts with some very slow practice, especially where there are trills, and then it'll be perfect

08. wouter79 - Album for the Young (after Schumann), "Italian song" Op. 39, No. 15
fun piece, nicely played

09. Pianist685 (Constantin) - Etude Op. 45 No. 15, "Warrior's Song"
interesting piece that I didn't know, sounds very good

11. Jerzyk19 - What A Wonderful World
lovely arrangement, very well played

13. Monica K. - La Nascita Delle Cose Segrete
I don't know the piece but your performance does sound flawless

15. CASINITALY (Cheryl) - Danny Boy / Londonderry Air
very nicely played, I dare to say very touching

16. zsolpyW - WInd of Change
beautiful piece, beautiful arrangement, beautiful performance smile

18. Lotus in Blue (Laura) - Sonatina in G: I. Moderato
cute piece, played nice, and I like the description of your interpretation too smile

19. BSharp(C)yclist (Dan) - Sonatina F Major (Op. 168, No. 1, I)
sounds nice. It's possible that I heard some slight uneveness every now and then but it was almost unnoticeable.

20. briangmoore - Monday
nice. This piece sounds so sad, I'm gonna cry frown

21. Keselo - Morning Prayer (Op. 101 No. 2)
well done. Definitely can't tell where the wrong note is smile

23. sinophilia - River City Blues
very cool

30. h8dk97 - Invention# 4
indeed mastering the trills in Bach is always a painful and long process, but the piece seems fairly under control and I'm sure that with some more practice you'll get it perfect.

35. mel_lem/Melanie - Invention No. 8 in F Major, BWV 779
a little slower than the versions I'm used to listen to, but still very nice to listen. Excellent work as usual.

43. joangolfing - March BVW Anhang 122
sounds good, especially impressive if you sight-read this without looking at the keys, that's a skill in which I'm severely lacking

47. Ralphiano (Ralph) - La Poupee (The Doll)
well played

Thanks to everyone who listened to and commented on my submission. ( 20. Einaudi/Monday)

I have been so busy, I have not had time to add my own comments here on the recital, but I hope to!!
It is on my phone and I have been listening to all the pieces and there are some so many amazing performances and interesting selections.

But I did not want to go too long without at least expressing my gratitude to those involved in the recital project and those who comment. It is very gratifying to know that someone is listening. Just that alone, is so valuable.

Some commented on the piano that I used; I thought about that, when I first started out, but then just forgot about it, but here is the context behind it is this:
I am very committed to the acoustic instrument. I just love real, mechanical pianos. Unfortunately, I have realized that this is a very expensive habit smile

The only instruments I have at my disposal are an older upright at home with many flaws and the pianos in the practice rooms of the university where I work. These practice pianos have many imperfections but at least they do tune them twice a year. I tried recordings on several different ones and finally picked the one I thought sounded best. They all have very unique sounds even though some look identical to my eye.

I also experimented with different placements of the microphone, in this case a Zoom H2 (borrowed from the media center!). You don't have a lot of options as those rooms are so small.
I found that I had to move the recorder a bit back from the piano somewhat to avoid saturation, even with the record level set to a quite low level. So in this case, I believe it was just off to the right of me, sitting on a music stand (you can probably hear heavy breathing if you listen carefully !). I figure it is better to be on the right hand side, as you don't want to emphasize the bass notes to much (at least in a piece like this).

The other thing I realized was that, in previous recitals, I had just put up something when it was time to contribute. This time I decided to try to work longer on the piece before submitting.
Still there are many errors, but of course repetition helps. I still was not able to memorize the entire piece, even though I kept working on that. I had it about 2/3 committed to memory but it seemed if I waited until it was all there it would be just too long a wait.

Thank you so much to fellow Recitalists for your kind and always-encouraging comments. I *did* notice that The Crane Dance was well received - I wonder if Einaudi has gained any converts? smile

(And no, Shepherd, I suspect your ears are deceiving you re the ‘imprisoned maximalist’. A minimalist approach suits my very-mature fingers just fine!)

Once again, my heartfelt thanks to all at Piano World who continue to make these valuable Recitals happen!

Oh, well. I suppose it must have been my very mature ears deceiving me. 😁

MarieJ, your crane dance I very much enjoyed it so I'll mention it again.

Not that I needed converting but I revisited an oldie last night I did many recitals ago, underwood, I love that piece, I think I am ready more or less to do a rerecord one of these days with some differences.

Unfortunately I think ( or not ) I often think Einaudi gets popularised around here by the iconic tunes like I Giorni and other such pieces he is well known for , which I find a bit ordinary and too easy listening/smoochy personally ( at times). In the recitals, it is usually the hit singles that most will jump at starting out with Einaudi, but they are actually my least favourites, all the gems are mostly the lesser known ones smile IMO, Some of the best stuff he has done I enjoy most are collaboration works with others, like the album cloudland, and recently this concert too https://youtu.be/mf3fyVKltuE?t=30m28s , a very nice mix of electronic and acoustic sounds, with an oriental flavour. smile Enjoy Einaudi fans.

Back to the recital, I heard most at this stage and would like to congratulate each and every one even if I don't comment on all entries, once again it has been a very enjoyable recital, with new pieces I never heard before I'd also like to play ... one day.

Many thanks to those commenting on mine since, I hope I didn't omit anyone.

On the whole I am glad some thought I captured the whole church and reverent smile There is an irony to this, that my last two pieces were a morning prayer and In Church, all with a religious theme, I love a lot of church music in general. As for the inspiration and the feeling I get from tho pieces is rather different for me, since I am not in any way religious, but they do have a meditative feel I rather enjoy. With morning prayer there is hope, while the feeling In church gives me a sense of .... desperation, almost, that is what I tried to express anyway. eek
