The title of the thread and the initial query is about "'most' piano music". Why would we consider Schubert's 600+ songs when the OP is asking about the most piano music?

I would think the same approach would apply to Bach. Excluding his organ works, his other keyboard works (which can and now usually are played on the piano) certainly don't number nearly as high as those of other composers of piano music already mentioned.

The songs are not written for piano?

No, of course not; they are written for voice and piano and no one recognizes them, in their original form, as piano compositions!

.... and just as well, as he'd lose to Cole Porter, who wrote over 1000 songs.... ;-)

Let's all get our terminology right. This is Pianist Corner, and we define a song as:

...and this is not a song, despite no appearances to the contrary wink :

And this is a song transcription for piano by Liszt:

.....from the original song by Schumann:

And there are all those dance ditties--waltzes, ländler, ecossaises, etc., by Schubert.

And Aaron Copland bragged that he was a better composer than Bach, because he wrote 90% fewer pieces that J. S. (so they had to be greater masterpieces). 😀

Do you think the piano part is incidental?

By using your definition of 'voice and piano' not being piano compositions, then we should not count chamber music, nor the concerti repertoire, as 'piano music.'

OP referred to 'piano music.' Is that not, music written for the piano?

Do you think that all music that has a piano in it is called "piano music"?

Is Saint-Saëns's Organ Symphony piano music?

Are Prokofiev's symphonies (Nos.2, 4, 5, 6 and 7) piano music?

Are Shostakovich's symphonies (Nos.1, 5, 7 & 13) piano music?

BTW, chamber music isn't called "piano music" either. And piano concertos are concertante works for piano & orchestra. You, of course, can call them "works which include the piano"........

Indeed, I think we should scale down the specification. I think there are gradations in those examples. Schubert lieder is much more 'piano music' than a Prokofiev symphony. A piano concerto is definitely 'piano music,' in my book.

We could argue about it endlessly, or the Original Poster could say that he meant 'solo piano' music.

You might get away with calling a piano concerto "piano music" when the conductor isn't within earshot, but try telling a Lieder singer that Winterreise is "piano music".......

I don't know who wrote the most music for piano but I'm sure that without Chopin piano music would be orphan
