One of the best things about Pianoteq, IMO, has always been the real-time recording. It helps me overcome "Red Dot Syndrome" (something I suffer from), since PTQ automatically records the MIDI of whatever I play ALL THE TIME. I sometimes take advantage of this when using other VST software by having PTQ record automatically in the background (PTQ volume set to zero) as I play something else - Garritan CFX, for example.

In this way when I play something in CFX that I'm happy with, the MIDI is automatically captured by Pianoteq. (ie - I don't have to activate the "Red Dot" in CFX beforehand.) This has worked great in PTQ 4 and 5, but I'm having a problem now in PTQ6 (Standard). In PTQ 6, it seems that the MIDI file is recorded at half-speed or thereabouts when I play a different VST with PTQ in the background - specifically Garritan CFX. (I have not tried this with other VSTs.)

Just wondering whether anyone else has noticed this? Or am I the only person crazy enough to do this? Is anyone willing to give this a try (using any VST) and report back?

Is this a glitch worth reporting to Modaart?

BTW - I'm using the standalone versions of both PTQ 6 and Garritan CFX. IOW, I'm not doing this from within any DAW software, if that matters.

Thanks!

Bert

I made a try with the same VSTis, Pianoteq 6, and Garritan CFX, but I can't get two virtual instruments to share my keyboard. If I start Pianoteq 6 first, and then the CFX, it reports my digital piano as currently unavailable, and a similar thing happens when I reverse the order in which I open the virtual piano hosts.

However, when I simply open Pianoteq 6, push the record button, record a few notes, and stop recording, I can save what I recorded as a MIDI file, without problems. It appears to be recorded in the tempo I played, each time.

Sorry to answer a question with another question, but how do you make your physical instrument available to more than one piano VST?

Don't ask me why this works, but it does (at least for me):

CFX Settings (64 bit Version): ASIO4ALL v2
256 Samples
44100 Hz

Pianoteq 6 Settings: ASIO4ALL v2
128 Samples
44100 HZ
Bit Depth = 32

Sound card in both cases is a Steinberg UR-22 (USB sound card). Keyboard is Kawai VPC-1. OS is Windows 7.

I load CFX first (full version, not CFX Lite), then Pianoteq. This results in Pianoteq not generating sound, but the keyboard is still detected. CFX functions normally.

Now that I look at the settings, perhaps the answer to my original question regarding playback speed is the mismatched number of samples between the two? <shrug>

Thanks.

Sounds like a MIDI clock/resolution change to me in the defaults of PTQ5 -> PTQ6. Even if you cannot fix it there, you can fix that in a sequencer/editor.

On a different perspective, I am a big believer of: Practice when you mean to practice, play when you mean to play, and record when you mean to record. Just saving something that happened to be okay does a lot less for musicianship. Targeting a performance (live or recorded) is a very different thing than accidentally getting it right once.

That opinion aside, since you are not using any DAW software, what you are essentially doing is running 2 VSTi hosts at once. You are probably better off using a dedicated VSTi host like MainStage (or whatever Windows equivalent there is) or a DAW. Probably a DAW.
