An advanced student of mine, who has recently discovered the wonders of the fairer sex, is wondering what repertoire he could learn that would improve his chances with the ladies. He is confident he can persuade them to listen to his playing, and that with the right choice of repertoire, he will most certainly score a home run.

Being of limited experience in the ways of love myself, I am not sure how to advise him. I can imagine that Chopin's "Fantaisie-Impromptu," in its virtuoso writing and tender middle section, could serve as a springboard for seduction, offering the pianist chances to demonstrate prowess at the keyboard, as well as sensitivity.

I also hear that the first movement of the "Moonlight Sonata," and "Claire de Lune" are seductive numbers.

But that may not be enough. Even if the initial musical offering achieves its goal of winning the heart (and body) of the courted listener, additional music will be required to maintain the romantic illusion.

I think a repertoire of disparate musical styles would be useful, as the young man is figuring out what kind of girls he likes. Although it's not an obvious example, I consider some of Schubert's Impromptus, such as op. 90 no. 1, rather romantic and seductive, along with some of the Liszt-Schubert transcriptions. I imagine the list of seductive repertoire could be quite extensive indeed.

You may not approve of my enabling the young man to lever the piano's awesome power of seduction to the lascivious pursuits of the flesh, but I think anything that motivates him to practice is positive.

Brahms, Op. 118 #2. If he can play it right and she doesn't like it, he wants nothing to do with her.

Really it would be an impossible task to determine which Music would be seductive to a specific female: for one, the choices can certainly be a Brahms intermezzo, or clair de lune. For another, it might be jazz and for another Einuidi.

I know he probably would not want this suggestion, but I would recommend he learn what appeals to him in a personal way, and then he will find a date that is compatible with who he really is as a musician. That would be the beginning of a sustainable relationship.

Or: Find out what SHE likes, and learn to play one or two pieces of that ilk very, very well.

It is more important that a spouse is simply able to put up with a partner's obsession with music. I asked mine six times before we were married if she thought she could put up with it. She answered six times that she could and, after thirty-seven years together has been proved correct. Seducing somebody with piano playing is puerile nonsense.

I'd already seen the light as a teen with regards to seducing ladies with piano playing.

My mom was seduced by a piano player in a restaurant, who bobbed his head à la Clayderman, made eye contact with the ladies à la Clayderman, played Clayderman favourites, occasionally winking at them like Liberace. My mom couldn't take her eyes off him, and asked me why I didn't play like that, and play that kind of music. (At the time, I was playing Widmung and Rondo capriccioso, which to her was just noisy cacophony. Actually, everything I'd ever played was just noisy noise to her discerning ears, and she always tried to drown out my playing by turning the volume of the TV up).

I therefore gave up the idea of ever trying to seduce the opposite sex with my piano playing. Instead I only played the music I liked, and in my own inimitable style. Oddly, my playing has been attracting the attention of the fairer sex in recent years wink , especially with pieces like Ondine (Ravel's rather than Debussy's) and........... Widmung and Rondo capriccioso.

The moral of the story? Have the courage of your convictions and don't listen to your mother smirk .

Not exactly.. but you're more likely to get other musicians. That certainly was the case with all the romantic interests I had in college.

Sure - why do you think all the famous composers died of syphilis?

He needs to turn on the music machine and give all his attention to the sylph in front of him. Faure's Ballade worked on me.
He can snow her later with his own keyboard passion.
