Michael, make sure to visit the Factory in Germantown (not far from the site of the original Cunningham Piano Co. showroom).

As an update I ended up having to travel to Washington DC on business. One of the days I was done at 11AM and took the opportunity rent a car and drive up to the Cunningham Factory. I was given a tour of the place. It is really an amazing facility. Back in the early 20th century we had 100's of piano's built in this country and their factories have either been sold and re-purposed or torn down to build something new. The fact this still stands and is still used to rebuild and work on pianos is amazing.

While I was there I played on many pianos, some way way out of my price range but I played on the Cunningham's from their Studio to the 9ft Concert grand. I felt all these instruments at their price were a bargain but I did purchase a Cunningham Parlor grand. It is being shipped to me as we speak. Unfortunately Cunningham is in the North East and I am in the Pacific North West so it will take a few months to get here but it is worth it.

Lessons learned through all this process. There are a lot of good pianos out there at between 10K-20K. They all just have a different feel and sound to them. We are at a point where you can not just say the Chinese can not make a piano. Some Chinese piano's I played were very nice. What Cunningham has done however is blend what the West does well (design and selection of materials) and blended this with what the east does well (efficiency) and put it together with materials sourced around the world.

CONGRATULATIONS MIKE! I am also a Cunningham Parlour Grand owner. So glad you were able to visit Cunningham and play/hear for yourself. Believe me, you will love your piano more and more every time you sit to play it. I learned I didn't have to go bankrupt to get the piano of my dreams!

Enjoy the Holidays to come!

Congrats on the piano. We were in Ardmore about a month ago but were very busy and I didn't have a chance to drop by Rich's new store. The store in Germantown and workshop were always a treat. The last time I was there , I couldn't get over how the Cunningham grand was so much like a Mason-Hamlin with a nice round sound that was gorgeous. Again, I hope you enjoy your piano.

Having been at Cunningham, and having had the opportunity to examine the Parlour Grand firsthand, I will say, as a piano technician, it is a fine-quality instrument. It absolutely seemed to me to be built with traditional quality, which to me means it will last for a long, long time, and will always be capable of great sound. Having heard it both firsthand, and several recordings of one being played by incredible pianists, to me, it was the kind of sound that gives me goosebumps.

I would own one if I had room for it. As it is, I have too many pianos... laugh

Gee, we agree on something. Imagine that (inside joke, folks). I didn't buy a Cunningham Parlor, and that may be because the action on the one example I was able to find close enough to look at, was just too heavy for the wife. That's something that could have been worked on, but I also have a wife who refuses to fly. Oh, well...

To me, the Cunningham is a good bit darker than its Hailun kin and I think it may be a little better in the low base. But as OT said, the build quality for a piano in this price range is very good, indeed. The rim is thick, the plate is heavy, and many of the little things just look good. Maybe that's because the guys at Cunningham go over them with a fine tooth comb, I dunno.

But if you are near their shop, and in the market for a grand in that price range, you do yourself a disservice by not test driving one.

I am not near a shop, about 2500 miles but it was worth the trip to see the place. The only down side is the piano is now with Walter Piano Transport and I need to wait a few months for delivery but it is worth the wait. I think people even outside the Philly area should consider it.

Hi Michael,

Thank you again for taking the time and trouble to visit and choose a New Cunningham Parlour grand here at Cunningham Piano Company. I am sorry we did not get to meet in person but I am confident that we will at some point in the future.

As you stated, we do ship worldwide but we have no international dealers.
