There seems to be a lot of buzz about this already, especially the concerto competition. Some really good pianists have already indicated that they might be attending. So I asked wife, and got permission to go. Cool. I hope there'll be a multitude of Piano World people there!

Here's the link to the festival page: http://www.pianotexas.org/amateursprogram.asp.

The specified concerto competition repertoire is pretty extensive:

Concerto Repertoire List:
Bach: All Concertos
Haydn: Concerto in D major
Mozart: All Concertos
Beethoven: All Concertos
Mendelssohn: Concertos Nos.1 and 2
Chopin: Concertos Nos.1 and 2
Schumann: Concerto in A minor
Grieg: Concerto in A minor
Liszt: Concertos No.1
Saint-Saëns: Concertos Nos.2 and 4
Tchaikovsky: Concerto No.1
Brahms: Concertos Nos.1 and 2
Rachmaninoff: Concertos Nos.2 and 3
Prokofiev: Concertos No.2 and 3
Shostakovich: Concerto No.2

Finalists get to perform with the Fort Worth Symphony.

I am amazed that the program cost is just $850! Sure, there's plane fare and "wonderful" dormitory accommodation, but still. I'm in!

Did I read somewhere that they are limiting the number of participants to 18?

I went to my acceptd account but it looks like the application isn't open yet.

According to the web, "Continuing the established procedure, in 2018 an International Jury will to select performers for the Amateurs Program based on submitted video recordings. 18 performers will be selected and upon their recommendation will be invited by the Executive Director."

It seems you will need to submit video recordings for audition. It does not state the length of the pieces for video recordings.

I think the Dallas International Piano Competition does something similar. All aspiring contestants submit recordings, and 32 (I think that is the number) are selected to appear at the contest site to perform and compete before the public.

This is not what I expected at all. I had no idea it was competitive at the entry level. There was no audition or anything when a small group of us attended the mini-session last year prior to the Cliburn. Maybe the fact that we'd qualified for the competition was sufficient for PianoTexas to accept us.

Frankly it's a bit annoying, because doing a professional looking audition video is expensive.

Still no sign of an application link on the main website and acceptd.com says something like "not available yet". Cliburn gave us a year's notice, well, let's say about 9 months prior to the application deadline. With PT we're looking at 3 months now to get our acts together and pull a groovy audition mix tape. Not lol.

I don't see where it says videos have to be recent. Maybe we can just upload what we used for Cliburn? Or would people start to think that's all we can play?

Probably a stupid question, but here goes....

For the amateur competition, how much do you think playing only the second movement of a concerto would hurt me? I don't see anything in the rules that states the movement selected has to be the first movement of a concerto. I have the second movement of Brahms 2 almost ready to go, but there is no way I would be able to finish the first movement by the deadline (I started learning the 2nd movement first just because I like it better).

Has anyone actually done this in a previous Piano Texas or is it just understood that everyone will play the first movement?

Alternately, given the Russian theme I could probably bring back the first movement of Rach 2 in time. But I am concerned everyone will be playing that....

I haven't been to Piano Texas, but, based on my experience at amateur competitions and the like, I think this is probably reliable:

If you play the movement very well, it won't 'hurt' you in the least, except to the extent, other things being equal, that people who play movements with more variety will have an advantage.

However, other things are never equal. grin
So don't worry about it.
Play something that you love, and that you can play well and with confidence.

Good luck to all who is going to the competition.

It's too late for me to prepare the 2018 ....

I wonder if the Concerto Repertoire List is basically the same every year.

Hey coaster, if you (or anyone else reading this!) can definitively establish that there's no requirement for videos to be recent, that would be a huge weight off my mind.

For the first time in my life, I'm feeling like I'm overbooked, as in too many recitals and events upcoming. I have an informal piano group gathering on the 20th (which I take seriously), a conservatory recital on the 21st (Los Requiebros, eek!), a local music club (FMMC) recital on the 26th (Brahms Op 79 No. 1, Schubert 2nd Klavierstuck, Chopin Op. 34 No. 1), another local music club recital on the 28th, and three events in early March, including a masterclass with Santiago Rodriguez. Plus I've promised a local string group that I will start rehearsing the Brahms Piano Quintet and Debussy's cello sonata in February.

This would normally be fine except that I was in England for over 2 weeks over Christmas and haven't been able to practice effectively since I got back on account of having contracted pneumonia -- or as my internist puts it, "some pneumonia". My Steinway is still in the shop undergoing major hammer, action, and key bushing replacement/reconditioning. So when I can practice, it's on a Kawai console that is great for most purposes but has so much lost motion that I can't rehearse dynamic nuance or anything to do with tone except by imagining sounds that I'm not actually hearing.

So if it turns out that Piano Texas wants a pristine recording specifically produced for this year's event, I'm toast.

PS, Sorry for the vent. It's just so frustrating not to have the energy to practice when you feel really sick. Hopefully this will turn out well and I'll see the entire Cliburn Mafia contingent in Fort Worth this summer, or, as they call it in Texas, winter. ha

So, with the deadline approaching, how many of us are going after the 18 slots available? And what concertos? Looks like I'll be choosing Brahms 1 / III because my teacher says that would be a good choice for me. Started learning it last week and now I am loving it to death!

Is it really true that we only get one masterclass???

SImon -- I hope you were kidding with the apology!
Because, none was needed. If you weren't just kidding, I think you misread Heather's post.
(I doubt it was anything like sarcastic. I think it was only just what it was.)

I was being sincere. I felt like I had maybe come off as a bit show-offy and Heather was quietly implying that I should be more discreet because many of us don't have the chance to play and perform to the extent that I do, what with all the opportunities available in this big metropolitan area. So I should offer a meta-apology for presuming that there was something in Heather's post that I should apologize for.

Heather, if you're reading this: I'm truly sorry I misread your post. And very annoyed with myself for doing so.

If it was just a concerto competition I would apply, I feel ready with that.

But I do not have two other works in good enough shape right now. I could bring back something old but I am traveling for work over the next week. Wish the deadline was just one more month out.

I am kind of tempted to just submit a couple of old recordings, but the older stuff I have is not stuff I would want to actually play in the masterclass.

After months of procastination, I submitted my application for attending the amateurs program, with just an hour to spare before the deadline. . My chosen concerto is the first movement of Prokofiev 3. If I had more time, I would have loved to do both the first and the third movement, but it’s better to focus on just one movement and make it better give I the time constraints.

I just recorded three tracks: Medtne, Medtner and (here is a surprise) Bach yesterday. Just audio, on an out of tune piano... blemishes, yes, mistakes too many, but...

Ken, I listened to your stuff. The Bach was truly magnificent. Lovely voicing and perfect balancing of textures. You'll be a star at Piano Texas. I just hope I'll be there with you to enjoy this wonderful opportunity to make music.

So I'm more nervous about this one than I was about Cliburn. I figure if I practice hard, I'll jinx it, but if I don't I'll screw up. I want to buy plane tickets, but there's no way I'm going if I don't get in. Not to Texas in June. So anybody heard anything yet? I don't care if you're honest. It will be a relief, frankly, either way.

Meanwhile, here's a fun quiz. What concerto movement(s)? Just copy and paste the below bit.

SiFi: Brahms D minor concerto, last movement
Ken: Prokofiev 3rd concerto, first movement
Coaster: . . .

So I just checked the Piano Texas web page and found this on the application page:

PianoTexas
@PianoTexas
We received countless applications from around the world. Now the Selection Jury needs to choose the performers for all our programs. Pianist Dmitry Rachmanov is one of the three members of the Selection Jury. Let's enjoy his performance of Scriabin. https://youtu.be/DDb0OPM2VfU

"Countless applications" for 18 spots? I really am toast. Now realizing I should have done a professional recording.

I've heard through the grapevines that acceptance for the Young Artists program has been announced.
