I need to get a speaker or monitor tomorrow (Tuesday) for my RD700nx, and it has to be something that the local Guitar Center is likely to stock.

I'd really, really appreciate any suggestions!

It needs to be good enough that I can do a rehearsal with a singer. Top of the line/biggest/best not required -- just something that will fairly effectively get across the sound of my DP enough that the singer can tell what I'm doing.

Thanks in advance for any/all help!

This is what I would vote for .....

Focal CMS 40 Monitors ...

Might be more expensive than what you had in mind, but very good monitors.

Or ....

This is a nice monitor, also.

And much cheaper ...

Electro-Voice ZXA1
For live music and you can start with just one , it's quite small but designed for again-live music

It really depends on what you're willing to spend. Almost any powered speaker (or even computer speakers) will be able to convey your ideas one-on-one.

If you want something with relatively flat frequency response that will show off the sound of your RD700, the EV ZXA1 gets very good reviews. I recently bought a single QSC K8.2, which a Guitar Center might be more likely to have in stock, but is heavier and more powerful than the ZXA1, which already might be more than you need.

Are you looking to use the speaker down the road for larger events? Either of those would stand you in good stead for future gigs.

Also keep in mind that Guitar Center is owned by a conglomerate which seems to own half of the online music stores in the US. Many of them use various discounting coupons and programs to lower the selling price; Guitar Center might be able to match the price if you take 15 minutes to do some online comparison shopping before heading in to the store.

edit: Charles has some good advice about the JBL LSR305's also, which I notice GC seem to carry. A pair of those are very good bang-for-the-buck monitors for home use. One would do the job tomorrow and allow you to use a pair at home down the road if you wanted.

+1. I'm biased, I like mine.

The ZXA1 is over-kill (and over-priced) for a "practice amp" -- you'll have the volume turned down.

But as a stage monitor (for a loud stage), or a PA speaker for up to 100-150 people, it's really nice. Relatively light, very clean sound, compact, and quite loud for its size and weight.

So, if you expect to be needing those capabilities for your DP, it might be worth buying for the long term.

For a "practice amp", my Behringer MS40's ($180 US per pair) would do the job. The singer will hear you just fine. Way cheaper than a ZXA1.

The LSR305's are somewhere in between, in capability and price ($260 US per pair).
