After the piano party is before the piano party, as every German football enthusiast knows. wink

One possibility for next year is Germany.
The date would have to be a weekend in September 2018. I recommend not too late; the weather can be chilly in late September.

As general location, there are two options: Close to the Rhine, in Sankt Goar; or in Nürnberg, where I live.

About Sankt Goar: There is an academy with grand pianos there; and it's possible to rent a hall for a Saturday afternoon. Price: Probably 45 € per person.
Sankt Goar is close to the Loreley, with possibilities to visit castles or do a ship trip on the Rhine.

About Nürnberg: There are several hotels with pianos; but I don't know how good they are.
As a last resort, the party could be at my place; but I only have enough seating accomodations for up to 10 guests.

So: What do you think?
Is anyone interested in a piano party in Germany?

Maybe if I can arrange European Delivery of a new GT4 that week....wouldn't that be a great tie-in smile

I love these annual European Piano Parties. They are such fun! You can count me in for either location. I love the Rhine area, and Sankt Goar is in the heart of the most beautiful part of it, next to the Loreley. The Rhine flows through a steep gorge in this area with castles dotting the hillsides. September is a beautiful month to be there, because it is wine harvest time.

I have not been to Nuremberg, but I would be interested in a discovering a new part of Germany. Either place sounds fun!

I would strongly prefer St. Goar because of its beautiful surroundings. A hall at a piano academy for 45 EUR sounds fine. I also liked your first proposal (hotel Rheinfels).

Patrick, this is great news.

I plan to come with Mr Casinitaly, and we are fine with either location.
We've already been to Nuremburg (as you know! ) and loved it, we'd be happy to go back, no problem.

On the other hand, the Rhine location looks absolutely spectuacular and we've never been there so we'd be very keen to go there. The cost per person is fine with us.
I also like the idea that we could go on a boat trip on the river.

My first choice would probably be the Rhine - but if the majority vote for Nuremburg, that's absolutely fine. The hotel we stayed at was really nice, near the centre and not expensive - I can look it up and share the info if that becomes the location.

Thanks for getting such an early start on the party - I'm excited about it already!

PatH, would love to attend. I've applied for sabbatical that semester so maybe it's possible.

Quick update:

My sister and me have scheduled an appointment with the Sankt Goar International Music Festival Academy (SG-IMFA), to check out if the location is appropriate for a piano party. The appointment is at the beginning of December.
Links to the academy can be found here:
http://www.sg-imfa.com/de/about-us/our-venue-airbnb/

Staying at the academy is possible, but does not have hotel comfort.
We don't have to stay there for the night; I am thinking that some people might want to stay at hotels in St.Goar. The Schloss Rheinfels which has a grand piano in its lobby (see here) is at about 20 minutes walking distance from the academy, according to Google Maps.

It would be good however if I knew before the appointment in December if there are people interested in staying the night at the academy; or if hotels somewhere else are the preferred options.
This way, I can tell the academy if we need rooms.

Since the appointment is in a month, people have time to think about it. wink

The academy looks like a great place for the party. We would prefer to stay in a hotel, probably Schloss Rheinfels. I have not stayed there before, but I love Schloss hotels!

Hi Patrick -

the academy looks wonderful! I think it could be perfect for us!

You and your sister are a great team!!!!

Mr. Casinitaly and I would also prefer to stay at a hotel and the Schloss Rheinfels looks great! We've never stayed in a Schloss!

We are looking at the location to decide if we would drive up or take the train. .... but we're coming!

The academy is fantastic! I also do like the hotel Rheinfels and would prefer having a room there, not at the academy.

I would definitely be interested, though it depends on my schedule, work, school, whatever that ties me up, in ten months from now. I want to take a trip to Germany anyway, and a party like this would give me a good reason.

I was looking at flights from Copenhagen to Frankfurt am Main, which seems the most logical destination, and it doesn't cost that much. The best prices were non-direct flights, either with London or Amsterdam in between.

Hoping this will happen, and even if I can't make it, it'll be a joy to the ones who will be there. Great enterprise, patH!

I have an update; unfortunately not a very good one.

This weekend, my sister and me were supposed to meet the director of the academy; but he wasn't there, and nobody else was there either who could have shown us the location.
Luckily my sister had the good sense to call before, so we didn't have to make the trip.

She rescheduled for December 29th. On that day, a meeting with the academy director will hopefully be possible.
If not, then I guess I'll stop considering the academy as an option.

Since other locations on the Rhine where a bit of privacy is possible are hard to find, this may mean that the EPP 2018 would take place in Nürnberg; or not at all.
So keep your fingers crossed that December 29th will not turn out to be a dead end.

Everything is possible, and nothing is sure.

Hi PatH - I am so glad you didn't make the trip up there for nothing!
What a shame!
I hope things go better on the 29th.

If we end up in Nurnberg, that's fine - it's a wonderful city - let's see how it all unfolds!

Putting one of these parties together is a huge undertaking! I am glad you did not end up making an unnecessary trip. Hopefully the December meeting will work out. If not, I am happy to meet in Núrnberg!

Hi Path, Hi all,
At this point I would say a big YES for us, but it's better to put us on the "maybe" list.
Both locations are fine for me.

Cheers,

Wow, this sounds exciting. I’m going to kick this idea around and see if I can get any interest from my other half. We love that part of the world. Being a complete newbie to this idea and never having played for anyone or recorded anything - not sure if I can promise to be brave enough to participate but would love to meet up with the folks with funny names who have been so supportive over the years......

We have a date and a location!
Today my sister and me went to the academy in St.Goar and secured the location.

The European Piano Party 2018 will take place on

Saturday, September 8th 2018,
at the Sankt Goar International Music Festival Academy.
http://www.sg-imfa.com/

My parents will be coming too. We will stay at the Schloss Rheinfels.

About night locations: Most people interested wanted to stay in hotels. In this case, I recommend looking for rooms soon. On that weekend, there is a "Rhein in Flammen" event (rhine in flames) in Oberwesel, which is close to St.Goar. So it's possible that locations will be scarce soon.
It is also possible to spend the night at the Academy, as mentioned above. It's not like in a hotel; and the manager is very busy and prefers if people don't ask individually for room; but that I tel him the number of people, if necessary. I guess it would be best if those who definitely want to attend notify me (on this thread or per PM) if they want to take that option.

As program, my sister and me thought out the following:
Meeting on Friday, dinner at the Schloss Rheinfels
Saturday: Piano playing at the academy with a lunch break (details to be determined); in the evening possibly visiting the Rhein in Flammen; details to be determined as well.
No fix plans for sunday yet.

Looking forward to meeting you!

@casinitaly: Maybe you could change the title of this thread; remove the question mark and add the date (8.9.2018). Thanks.

i just booked us in at the Schloss from Friday 7th til Monday morning.

PatH's suggestion to book soon is REALLY IMPORTANT - it already seems that there are not so many rooms left at that time

I wish I could go but not possible. I need to take 2 weeks off to go to Japan for my mom's eye surgery support. In October I'm planning to take another 2 weeks off to accompany my mom's first Euro trip. We go to Paris and Venice. I thought about mixing the two trips together but I'm busy in September - September 30th is my company's year end. Maybe next year. Look forward to many pictures:)

This may be out for us too. Plans are forming to be in Europe some time in October with a trip up the St Lawrence for the fall colours beforehand. A September trip to Germany as well will be too much. Much as I'd love to meet up with you all, it might have to be another time. I'll keep watching the progress and jump in again if things change.

Wow, tempting now.

Kathy and I orchestrated a Piano Shop/Factory tour in 2011 that started in Hamburg Germany and ended in Vienna Austria.
We fell in love with Germany, such a beautiful country, and a music lover's paradise.

Our good friend Robin Meloy Goldsby (The Piano Girl) lives in Germany, and we have friends/contacts at Bosendorfer, Bluthner, and Steingraeber.

Not really in our budget, but at 66 (I turned 66 in November, Kathy catches up on New Years Eve) we are more inclined to
do things we might not have done before simply because one doesn't know how much longer one can keep joining adventures.

Anyway, keeping an eye on this thread for sure!

All the Best, and a Happy New Year!

Having trouble making a reservation at the Schloss Rheimfels. The online site is not going through. I'll work at it again here.

Thanks to PatH for arranging this EPP at such a fantastic location. Unfortunately, I cannot yet say if I will be able to attend. September is a long way off, I am not yet retired and as a freelance worker I don't know what lies waiting down the line. At the moment, it is possible, but I might well receive mandates in the course of the year that involve seminars on Saturdays when the companies' staff aren't working. I will be watching this thread and decide later.

Nice to see people coming! smile

The location is not too far from the airport Frankfurt (FRA). By train from FRA, it's about 2 hours of travelling to St.Goar; changing trains at least once.
Other possible airports are Frankfurt-Hahn (an airport popular with low cost airlines), or Köln/Bonn. But I don't know how many planes go there, and how the train/bus connections are.

Everything is possible, and nothing is sure.

I uploaded two pictures of the academy. One from the outside; the other from the piano room.
http://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthreads.php/galleries/2701547/epp-2018-location.html

(About uploading pictures: Do the descriptions in this thread still match reality?)

NOTE: In the academy, there are two small dogs. They seem to be well behaved; but I am mentioning this in case someone has a dog allergy or something.

Pat - the pictures look great - It seems like we're in someone's (rather elegant) drawing room !

As for your question:

the instructions are a bit off - but if you upload your pictures to a new gallery, and then right click on the image, you can copy the link location and then paste it into your thread - you need to put [ img ] at the beginning of the link and [ /img] at the end - (no spaces inside the [ ] ) .

As for the dogs- thanks for the heads up. I have a mild allergy to dogs (cats are worse) - but if they don't spend much time with us in the room , and if I don't touch them, I should be ok. I'll bring my puffer just in case!

I'm really excited that we've got bookings rolling so well already!

Are any of you planning extended trips and thinking about a river cruise or visiting interesting piano/music places at all?
I will stay in Europe and meet up with hubby in Oct so have a few weeks to explore myself- anywhere really - but a river boat to Vienna and visits around there sounds wonderful. There are so many music pilgrimages to make in that part of the world! Any ideas welcomed. There have to be some 'must do's!
Piano camp? PM me if this is a bit off topic!

We're planning to do 2-3 weeks in Europe...Germany and France. That is, IF my sabbatical is approved and I can go. A music location sounds good to me.

I don't know yet if I can make it as the end Aug/Sept is when Sim will be finishing uni and we may need to sort out what's happening around that point, while I could potentially be free myself it is too early to say and I don't want to book it to find that I'm unable to attend frown

Does look great though smile

Just wanted to say, I'm pretty much bent on coming to this party, very excited for it at least and want to do everything I can to make it. It's just me, or it looks like it.

I don't plan to stay overnight in the area. My plan is to find a hostel somewhere not too far away, and take a train or bus to the destinations of the party, if that's possible, both on Friday and Saturday. I speak a little German and can ask for directions.

Then I would presumably part with the group on Saturday night, that is, while most of the people would take the train at 23:48 to Sankt Goar, I would take the train to my place, wherever that will be.

If anybody knowledgable with the area, or Germany in general, can give me some advice, or has a reason to doubt my (not completely laid out) plan might not work out, that would be appreciated. If not, you can count me in.

Hi TheodorN - it's great that you're thinking of joining us .
I can't help you with the area, or German, but ..... I was just wondering if you had seen that the place we'll be holding the party has some fairly basic rooms that might be more convenient that staying in another town and trying to take trains late at night.

If you factor in the cost of the extra train travel, maybe it would be cost effective for you. Just a thought!

Thank you casinitaly and patH.

I only noticed about the possibility to stay at the Academy for 40€, after I sent my first post, and I've sent a PM to patH, that I want to stay there Friday, and Saturday night. It's even a bit under what I wanted to spend on accommodation, so it's great.

Look forward to the party, and the interesting program that has been put together. Never been to Germany, that I can say, except a few weeks ago, when I was on a visit close to the Danish-German border, and we took a short trip to the neighbouring border towns and Flensburg.

Honestly this would be a massive undertaking - with two high school kids and their summer plans I just don't think it would be possible to escape for a quick trip across the ocean. Have a wonderful time and thank you for extending the invitation!

Look, if you don't take a European trip, you are completely denying your kids the opportunity for a booze-laden weekend party with 100 other drunk teenagers. This is a rite of passage in American pop culture... or it was. Please respect traditions.

Lol sounds like the right move to me! First though is an Alaskan cruise with my extended family (I'm not really into going on a boat with 5,000 or so strangers and have been putting this off for years but I cannot delay it any further), a teen tour for my daughter, an internship in LA for my son, and there goes the time and budget. Maybe next summer smile.

Another subject that was brought up via PM: The "Rhein in Flammen" event is not a must part of the event. People who do not wish to go on a ship don't have to. The fee would then be lower.
But I think it would be nice if as many people as possible from the EPP went to the Rhein in Flammen. It would be a nice ending for the party day.
But I respect if people get seasick easily, or are afraid of the water.

Just confirm until May if you wish to participate on the "Rhein in Flammen", so that the correct number of tickets can be ordered.

Thanks for the update. I'll get a confirmation from my work on the summer vacation I've asked for, at the end of this month. If I get the weeks off I've asked for, I'm in, and I want to participate in all that is included. Just like casinitaly, I'm especially looking forward to the Rhein in Flammen sailing. I can't imagine the waters get that rough on the Rhein, but if they will, I come from a long line of Icelandic sailors, and I demand of myself, that I'll be able to take it. cool

Really looking forward to joining in on all that you have planned, including the boat trip! Thank you for putting out all the effort of organizing this. I’m thrilleda to be included. I’m polishing up a piece or two but will be so apprehensive about playing for you all.....

Hello all!

First of all thank you patH for adding me to the list! We originally planned vacation in the middle of summer but my wife recently injured her knee and became not really mobile. September 7th is 5 month far from now and I really hope she will recover much sooner smile Also we have national holidays on the week starting September 9th so I currently see it as a very good chance for us to have vacation in that time and attend this event.

Now, I want to apologize for that doubt about boat trip that came from me frown So let me clarify that:
We both have grown in the city by the sea, my wife's father was naval officer and my father supervised shipbuilding plant. When I was young I played water polo and also participated in a maritime campaign as a cabin boy... you got the idea - water and ships are sitting deeply in our mentality. We are trying to take a ship trip whenever it is possible...
Unfortunately where I am working now my vacation cannot be confirmed until very last weeks before desired dates (even with national holidays that don't cover all days in that week). That's the only reason why I cannot confirm our participation by end of May and I don't want to put that ticket reservation under risk... If we will be there we'll definitely want to get to the ship also, but if my vacation will be cancelled then we won't come at all... But as I understand ship reservations must be final soon...
So unfortunately at this moment I can only be optional participant of the main piano event smile

I am hoping to spend a week in Vienna after this. I have been looking at all sorts of things to do there. Any advice appreciated. Maybe I should ask you to PM me since it is a bit of a side track to the thread! Thinking of Hotel Beethoven, and all sorts of music events. Have to follow in so many footsteps of The Greats who spent time there!

Vienna is amazing! Go to a concert at the Musikverein if you can. There's Mozart's house and Beethoven's Museum. There is also a Music Museum (Haus der Musik) but it's mainly an interactive exhibition targeted at kids. And of course there's a ton of other things to see that are not related to music, like the Spanish Riding School, Hofburg, Schönbrunn Palace, etc. I spent 4 days in the city and visited almost everything with a Vienna Pass.

Hi Sinophilia, I am having a great time setting up trips already. Mozart's Requiem in Karlskirche for one, Musikverein for sure, Kursalon and Schonbrunn, then something at St Anne's. Daytime to visit the other things - museums and markets! I want to take in the walking tours I've come across ' In the Footsteps of - Mozart, Beethoven, and others if I can find them. And a trip out to some vineyards - Grinsing? Don't know how I'll get there from St Goar yet, or where I'll stay - Hotel Beethoven sounds like great place for an devotee! Planning is half the fun!

Thank you casinItaly, very helpful. I'm working out the whole trip, and will most likely take a flight to Frankfurt, so possibly I can arrange the train trip when I get there. If I decide to book beforehand , it's good to have this link.

Now if anyone has some input as to what is the best way to find accommodation in Frankfurt or somewhere on the way to St. Goar, that would also be appreciated. I'm talking about the night before our program starts.

The brute force method tells me hotels[dot]com or booking[dot]com, but if there are other ways, it would be nice to know. I'm assuming booking should rather be done sooner than later. Rhein in Flammen will probably attract a lot of tourists.

We booked at the schloss ( I don’t remember the exact name, it should be in this thread near the beginning).
We used booking.com.

You are right, you should try to book as soon as possible- the festival definitely draws a crowd, from what Patrick had told us.

Looking forward to meeting you !

Yeah, Schloss Rheinfels, looking at it right now. Just reviewed earlier posts and saw it mentioned, very beautiful indeed.

Edit Nicht verfügbar, think it means no availability. I'll look elsewhere...

There was also the option to stay at the place where we’re actually holding the party.
The accommodations were a bit on the basic side but they looked perfectly acceptable.
......( I just couldn’t resist the idea of staying in a castle!)

I will stay at the Music Festival Academy on Friday and Saturday night. I assumed the school wasn't available except those two nights. If I was wrong it doesn't matter, I got a room at the Schloss Rheinfels on Thursday night, on Booking.

I'm also looking forward to staying in a castle. Just booked the flight with Lufthansa and SAS. I'll be in Frankfurt early in the afternoon, and spend a few hours in the city. See you at the Schloss Rheinfels, can hardly wait for this trip. cool

Unfortunately I can't participate this year. I am taking vacation from July 15th and cannot move it to September.
But I hope that wasn't my last chance smile

At the Mozart Haus the lower level was an old wine cellar Bösendorfer has turned into an amazing recital hall. We have had recitals there as part of master classes. There are regularly scheduled music programs held there as well that may be interesting for you. At Bösendorfer's Stadt Salon adjacent to the Musikverein you can play their Imperial grand in a private room (97 keys) for 20 Euro per hour. Lastly, there are extremely interesting tours of the Musikverein during the day given in various languages. The Musikverein, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnagie Hall are the three best venues in the world I believe. Just one or two blocks away there is a great restaurant in the Ritz Carlton.

Have a great trip to my favorite city on earth!! Steve

Lakeviewsteve Thanks for that advice. I’ll certainly hope to part with 20 Eu to play that piano! Got a feeling Vienna is going to top my list of favorite places too.

As for me, I'll arrive in St.Goar on Friday 7th, and me and my relatives will stay at the Hotel Rheinfels until Sunday.
Details about the arrival time are to be determined. But we have two months to go.

I may have more important matters at hand... practising piano pieces so that they can be presented to an audience. Only two months to go? Gasp...

Dear Patrick and all,

now I have received a mandate for an inhouse seminar on Saturday, September 8th, which means that I will unfortunately not be on board. Nevertheless, thanks so much for organising this event in such a perfect manner and at such a lovely location. I wish all of you a pleasant, interesting and inspiring piano party.

There is no official guidance for how long to play.

In the past parties, usually there was a first round where every pianist played a piece. The length of the pieces is on average comparable to the length of the pieces in online recitals. Can be everything from 1 minute to 15 minutes.
After then, all those who want to play more pieces do so, and take turns, usually one piece at the time.

I am currently preparing three pieces for the party; they are about 20 minutes long, put together. I am not yet 100% sure if they will be presentable for the party.

A question to the other party pianists: Does it make sense to post here what pieces we are planning to play?
Or should we keep it under wraps, in case we don't have the pieces ready for September?

Everyone plays what they’re comfortable with.
None of us minds listening to those who are able to play longer pieces.
Play your favourites.
It’s all very relaxed.

To address Patrick’s question, I don’t think it’s necessary to say what we’re playing, but if anyone wants to, why not?
I will be playing my last three ABF recital pieces and perhaps I will try Traumerei again, but I don’t want to put pressure on myself for that one!

I'd like to play something, but I don't want to put too much pressure on myself, because if I do, I won't enjoy the party. It will become a stress factor. Have had some back pains recently, so sitting at the piano hasn't been an option. Maybe I can play something simple, and if I won't, I'll sure enjoy all the performances of you, good people and friends.

I have additional information for those who are staying at the Schloss Rheinfels Hotel (this includes me): They have a room with a piano; but on Friday September 7th there's a wedding scheduled there.
So I don't know if it will be accessible; but they told me that in general, guests are welcome to play there. I am writing this in case some of us want to practise before the party.
So maybe it is possible to practise on late Friday or early Saturday. I guess it's best to ask the reception.

Looking forward to September!

Love the update patH!
if it's possible to play before the party, I'll take the opportunity (thoughI will be nervous!)

I am really trying hard to take EVERY opportunity that comes up to play for anyone, anywhere.

Mr. Casinitaly and I are both really looking forward to this event - it's going to be so much fun to see everyone that we know, meet some new people, and enjoy the wonderful location!

Just had a long chat with my sister, to fine-tune the event.
Everything is on track. My sister made a beautiful program which I will send via PM to the confirmed participants.

The confirmed participants are:
BritishJim + 1
casinitaly + 1
Palmpirate
patH + 3
SwissMS + 1
TheodorN
WiseBuff + 1

To those, I have a question: Are there any vegetarians?
I am asking because the boat trip includes a menu. There are two options, one vegetarian and one non-vegetarian.
They need to know ASAP if they need to prepare vegetarian food, and how many. If not specified otherwise, the non-vegetarian menu will be served.
The options are:
Non-Vegetarian: Roast veal with champignons, vegetables and Spätzle (south-German noodles),
Vegetarian: Spinach-Tofu Strudel on tomatoes.

Another thing, especially to those who stay in the Schloss Rheinfels, or in other hotels that are not close to the railway station of St.Goar:
Do you want to walk to your places after we arrive back from the Rhein in Flammen, or shall we book Taxis?
This is especially important for people who may not want to walk to the Schloss Rheinfels. It's not far lengthwise; but a bit steep.

I also created a WhatsApp group "EPP2018", and have added me, my sister, and casinitaly. I thought it might be useful to have a group to chat. And in Europe, roaming is cheap for Europeans.
If you want to be part of the WhatsApp group, just send me your WhatsApp contact info via PM.

So: Let's hope for a piantastic party! wink

Everything is possible, and nothing is sure.

We aren’t vegetarians either! Casinitaly + Mr C

I will have a look at how steep the walk is and let you know tomorrow if we want to book a taxi or not.

The program looks great!

Non-vegetarian meal for me, and I'll walk to the Academy from the station. I've been looking forward to the party, and even more now, having seen the full program.

I’d like te vegetarian option Please! also I think the walk back depends on how steep it is. I’ll happily share a taxi and not worry about it. Do we need to book that now? I’ll look into the What’s Ap ap and be in touch.
Thanks for getting things so well organized, only three weeks to go!

Ok, we've checked and we'll share a taxi too. That last part seems really steep, and at the end of a long exciting day we don't feel we need the cardio work smile

I think we will do a taxi as well. As far as the meal plan, we do not need the vegetarian option.

The plan for the weekend looks great! I am getting excited already!!

Only one and a half weeks to go!
Today the tickets for the Rhein in Flammen event arrived. Hopefully there will still be water in the Rhine. wink

My sister has made another list: The menu options at the places where we are eating on Friday evening and Saturday noon.
The Schloss Rheinfels told us that if they know beforehand what we want, the waiting times might be shorter.
So here is the link to the options.

Those who are already in the EPP2018 WhatsApp group can reply via WhatsApp. I also shared the file there.
The others can send me a PM or post here on this thread.

Looking forward to next week!

Jealous as! I’m skipping Europe this year as I’m studying (psychology) so I am incredibly jealous of you all, and please post LOTS of photos so I can enjoy it vicariously!

The party was a success! At least that's my opinion and impression. wink

I didn't take many pictures. This is a group picture with all 14 participants (among them 8 pianists), in front of the piano.
[Linked Image]

The pianists were (position starting from the left):
Back row, in front of the piano:
BritishJim (1), Palmpirate (3), SwissMS (4), WiseBuff (5), casinitaly (6), TheodorN (8)
Second row:
Hans (patH's Dad) (2), patH (4)

Many of the participants are still travelling - we're among the first to get home, so let me say -

THE EPP 2018 GERMANY --- was absolutely fabulous!!!

A huge thanks to patH and his sister (Isabel), who put together a simply splendid event.

Friday, early evening, most folks went on a tour of the castle, which was actually part of the hotel property. Or maybe I should say, the castle and the hotel were one and the same! The difference being that the hotel was pretty classy and cosy, whereas the rest of the castle was a bit of a romantic ruin.

We had dinner together - with a stunning view over the river, hills and valley below us.
The next morning, we headed over to the Academy, for the party. The room we had was very much a "salon" -(no, not saloon, salon!) - very 18th C, pretty chairs and sofas, and two pianos. One of which we discovered (after the fact) we were not meant to be playing.

patH and Isabel had organized charming espresso cups for each performer, and for the first time since we started these parties, I took the bull by the horns and went first.
(I will provide a list of what everyone played, as I wrote most of it down, but have to check a few points.)

After we each did our first round of playing, we were presented with our mugs!
We had the pleasure of hearing Papa-patH play - and of helping him celebrate his 84th birthday!
Mama-patH didn't play piano, but she was also a delightful addition to our event.

After a couple of cycles of pieces we walked down the road to have our lunch and enjoyed getting to know people we hadn't met before, and catching up more with our old friends.
In the afternoon we had more really splendid performances, - one of which was a patH original of the Wagner Wedding March played in all kinds of music styles. --- I believe a video was made, and I do hope we get the link to it!!

When we had all exhausted our repertoires (well, I speak for myself.... I have a very small repertoire smile ) -- when we had finished playing our prepared pieces we did some "name that tune" games and some sing-alongs. patH was very obliging, listening to our suggestions whispered in his ear for things he should play for the group to guess at, and BritishJim was very helpful reminding us of the words to Over the Rainbow when our memories failed us!

As we wound down, it was time to head off to the train. We had time to visit the main church in St. Goar, which was built in about 1250, and was originally a Catholic church, but was later turned into a Protestant church. It was lovely - very elegant, very simple.

We hopped on the train - to the very next town, and had a chance to walk through a wine fair, and sample some local Riesling. Then it was down to the river to get on our boat for the evening cruise.

It was lovely to float down (or was it up?) the river, seeing the famous Lorelei rocks, and SO MANY castles on the hillsides! As it got dark the larger buildings were illuminated and the atmosphere couldn't have been more poetic.
When the fireworks started, we were blown away. I am not one to use the word "awesome" lightly - they were AWESOME! They had types of firesworks many of us had never seen before, and they went on for ages, along with music from Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". Simply amazing.

We had a longish wait for the train home, but that gave us time for more chatting and ..yes,.. more singing.

We were all pretty wiped out when we got back to the hotel, but we were all beaming with the accumulated joys of the day.
We bade farewell to Theodore at the station as he was in a different hotel and leaving earling in the morning - it was a real pleasure to meet him in person!

Sunday morning, patH, Isabel, Mama & Papa patH left after breakfast.
BritishJim and the missus, and Casinitaly+ Mr Cas visited the castle ruins together, and found we were pretty in tune with wanting to climb up and down everywhere, albeit with great care and infinite slowness on the part of the ladies smile

Palmpirate decided to have a Spa day at the hotel, while Wisebuff, SwissMs and Casinitaly plus their sweeties went off to Rudesheim for lunch and a wee tour of the town.
While in town we tried "fresh press" - very newly fermented wine, from the "it just happened" harvest - at about 2-3% alcohol. Very sweet and aromatic, like a dessert moscato, if that gives you an idea.
**********
This post was interrupted when Mr. Cas called me out to the balcony because there was a fireworks show going on --- not quite Rhein in Flammen, but pretty darn entertaining.

Back to the story...

**********************

The six of us plus Palmpirate met up for dinner at the hotel, and had a leisurely very chatty time. We had all been very decisively planning to have strudel for dessert. When our waiter said they had no strudel left there was a (rather loud) cry of dismay. We said:
"How can there not be strudel?"
"Are you SURE?"
"Are we in Germany?... We have to go to Germany for strudel."
"Really? There isn't ANY strudel?"

Then, while we reluctantly perused the dessert menu for something else, all the while bemoaning bewilderedly that there was NO STRUDEL... the waiter came back!!!
and He said....I checked with the chef, and we have 7 pieces of strudel!

Mr. SwissMs said, "Just a moment" - and he counted us. "Amazing," said he, "there are seven of us!"
We were delighted.
It took some time for the strudel to arrive, and it was hot, as if it had just come from the oven. We were pretty sure the chef made it specially, just for us. That's our story, and we're sticking to it.

We said our fond farewells and made our heartfelt promises to stay in touch, and headed off to rest our weary heads.

I'm sure we'll all be posting pictures soon - and between us there are quite a few - but regardless of any photographic evidence (or lack thereof at the moment) -take my word for it - we had a truly wonderful wonderful time!

Our thanks again and again to patH and Isabel for all the time and effort they put into ensuring that we had such a tremendously successful event.

Destination EPP 2019..... stay tuned. We have a bit of research to do but we have an interesting idea!

Congratulations on this fantastic event. I very much enjoyed reading CasinItaly's detailed report, and the photos are marvellous. Pat and his sister have done an outstandingly good job in organising everything.

Just one piece of information for CasinItaly: Strudel is not that common in Germany, maybe you will find it in Southern Germany, though. That pastry was invented in Austria (not Germany) and is popular in countries that belonged to the former Austro-Hungarian empire.
