apparently some Yamaha and Kawai portable digital pianos have optional 'tunings' available in their options, some of the more popular like meantone, Pythagorean, but also including historical temperaments like Kirnberger and Werkmeister.

does the P115 have the Bach period temperaments in its optional tunings ? if it does, is it readily accessible and easy to shift between the temperaments/tunings according to need and repertory ? thanks to all for reading and responding.

I am not a Yamaha P115 user/owner - but just a thought. If you connect it to PC using USB/Midi and use the P115 as a controller, Piano softwares such as Pianoteq standard allow you to specify various different tunings. There is a free demo of Pianoteq standard that you can download and try it out if you want to play around with it...

According to the P115 manual, it doesn't look like this is available. The P115 does have a pitch shifting feature so that you can tune the piano to a different reference pitch (for example to match it to some other instrument), but there doesn't seem to be any options for changing the type of tuning.

Osho, thank you. was considering using additional software for the keyboard I end up compromising on for a readily portable practice board. at my advanced age and never computer proficient, had hoped to find something ready to play. still might go with a controller type of keyboard and use an ipad for the auxiliary software, but they don't have actions comparable to the P115.

fizikisto, thank you for checking. pretty sure the Kawai ES100 I test played had the Kirnberger and Werkmeister, and some of the more expensive Yamahas do as well. it's their size that deters me, and though the p115 is also an 88 note keyboard, an expensive custom conversion courtesy of Sr.Minetti can reduce it.

I'm not an owner of the P-115 but according to this review you can't change the temperament of the keyboard (it only has transpose and tuning function).

The only portable pianos I know that have that option are the Casio PX-160, Kawai ES110, and Casio CGP-700, at least in this price range.
The Yamaha P-255 also has different tunning systems to choose from, but it costs twice as much as the P-115.

Sr.Costa, thank you that is helpful. will still consider the P155 for a portable practice instrument, but the other temperaments are fun for Bach.

PMFJI --

You wrote "P155". _That_ Yamaha _does_ have several temperaments available:

Quote
1: Equal Temperament
2: Pure Major
3: Pure Minor
4: Pythagorean
5: Mean Tone
6: Werckmeister
7: Kirnberger

You can set the "base note", as well.

If you can find one used, it might out-perform a P115, even though the design is from 2008.

Mr.Cohen, thank you. '155' was a typo on my part. apparently it's been superceded by the 255, which is considerably more expensive and heavier than the 115. at this point, will hope something new appears in the market that has a decent touch, not too expensive, twelve kilos or less in weight, and between 61 and 73 keys in length.
