Here's a mystery to me.
We bought a used Baldwin upright which sounds great. But one or two or three keys have a mysterious, disappearing voice!
Press the G key once, and it sounds and it sounds fine.
Press it once or twice, and it makes quieter sounds.
These are the symptoms. . . what's the diagnosis? Is this a case of the key assembly being tardy in returning to first position?

It seems to be that the piano has sluggish action centers. Your tuner should be able to deal with it. What I do in that case is to treat the sluggish centers with CLP. If that does not work then I am afraid that repinning may be required.

It could be a broken jack spring.

Definitely sounds like a stiff hammer centre, or maybe the hammer is rubbing the adjacent hammer? If the jack spring was broken, the note probably wouldn’t sound at all, although a weak spring or stiff jack centre could produce a similar fault.
Pop the top of the piano open and have a look at the offending hammer - when you play the note, does the hammer return slowly, or catch on the next hammer? All useful info for when you talk to your tuner/tech😊ðŸ‘

Thanks, everyone!
I'll take a look. I'm pretty skilled with repairs, small stuff, intricate repairs. Will see whether I can make a difference or need to call in a pro. MY big difficulty is that I live in a small town and finding a knowledgeable piano guy is hard to do, will take some traveling.
The key comes and goes. Sometimes it's absolutely fine. Sometimes you play it, and it weakens its return and play it a few times more and it just seems squashed. . . but with a little rest will return to action.

You need to call in a pro. Diagnosis is the easy part. Fixing it is an entirely different matter.
Check with the nearest institution that has pianos to see who they use. That could just be a music teacher who plays the piano at lessons.

If you can remove off such a problem key the keyboard, you need to carefully examine its edges. On the surface of the keys you can rarely find small wooden burrs to 3mm. A burr inhibit stand reverse lifting of a key, I think good luck,
