I practice about 2/3 hours a day, trying to do 5 days a week. But some weeks I can only do 4 days, but this week I can luckily do all 7 days. This practice isn't always as qualitative as I'd like, since concentration can be an issue sometimes.

I don't really want to go professional, since I think piano will be more fun as a hobby (I'm a Design student) Still I want to be able to play the most difficult music, for no other reason than that I love progressing. Love having goals, etc.

How much do you usually practice?

An average of two hours every day, occasionally taking a Tuesday off.

The straightforward answer is - as much time as I can while still getting on with other essential stuff, like working for a living, eating, sleeping, socializing, relaxing (to music, of course), exercising (sometimes to music), keeping myself fit and healthy: a pianist needs to live long - like Artur Rubinstein or Miecyslaw Horszowski - to reap all the benefits of his/her long years of daily practice. Look at Argerich, playing better at 76 than she did at 20 thumb.

I did the same when I was a student in my teens, in a boarding school: most of the time, I could only practice 6 days a week (for two to three hours between end of school classes to tea-time), because the Music Department was closed on Sundays. But occasionally, it would be opened up for rehearsals etc, in which case, I'd sneak in and spend the whole day in the practice room with the best piano, emerging only for meals (compulsory attendance, or the school will tick me off their list as "missing, presumed....." wink ).

During my practice time, I always build in 'relaxation time' where I'm just playing for fun - improvising & playing pop songs by ear, sight-reading through a volume of piano music I'd borrowed from the school music library (and not worrying how many dropped or wrong notes I played, leaving out inconvenient notes as required.....), doing the same with a violinist friend whenever he turns up etc. I never regarded my relaxation time as part of my 'practice time'. The practice time was spent working on what my teacher has taught me and whatever she has asked me to practice specifically for the next week (which could be just a small but technically difficult section of a piece, or scales in thirds etc).

These days, without a teacher, my practice time and relaxation time at the piano has been somewhat blurred - I might be learning a new piece, then suddenly decide to use a tune in the piece to improvise on; or maybe something jolts in my memory and I remember something I once played and want to play it again, and so try to play it by ear, or maybe look for the score......

"I don't play accurately - anyone can play accurately - but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned, sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life."

I average between two and three hours a day, some days a lot more. I am fortunate that my husband is a programmer even in retirement, so he is happy to spend a similar amount of time at the computer. I play everyday unless I am traveling. After all, I am the Mom of the MOYD thread! grin

I get in about 1 hour per day, 2 hrs on weekends. I would love to do more, but work and family obligations get in the way! I work from 6:45-6:00 most days except Tuesday, which is 6:45-12:30. I also have two teenagers and a wife! This practice time is sufficient for me but if I could get in 2-3 hours I'd be happy to spend it at the piano. I'm on the forum during the day in breaks in the action at work.

Like Argerich I am playing better at 75 than at 20, but only because I am now practising at least an hour a day, And making sure that it is quality practice.

Wow. I'll chime in for those with more humble practice routines. About half an hour a day average. Some days two hours, some days a quick 10-minute run-through of whatever I'm working on. I guess that's life with a four-year-old and full-time teaching job (including grading and class prep in the evenings/weekends).

I may also be speaking for others on the forum for whom piano is a secondary interest or artistic outlet. I'm a fiction writer (first book coming out next year), and so piano competes with that. I would love to spend more time at the piano, but honestly sometimes I spend too much as I procrastinate my writing . . .

I do 20 minute chunks. Between other jobs/"requests" from 'Er who must be obeyed. . .and between nocturnal bouts of sleeping. I'd be stumped without the headphones! Probably amounts to a couple of hours total on a good day. Always playing the same two, sometimes achieving microscopic improvements along this dusty road . . . Love it!

I usually practice 2 to 2/12 hours a day every day unless I am away. I could not have done that when I was younger and had children and a full time job. I admire those of you who manage to do it with jobs and families. My children are all grown and I only work 20 hours a week now mostly to pay for my piano lessons and vacations.

I like to do 2 hours a day, every day but lesson day, but what I like and what actually happens because of reality is not always the same. I usually wind up skipping and day or two and doing an hour to an hour and a half most days.

My base time is an hour. I work at home, so many days I'll use 20-30 minutes of my lunch hour for some extra practice. Occasionally, if I can't use the lunch period, I'll take shorter 10 minutes stints as a break. Weekends, it's about two hours spread out over the day. Sometime it'll be longer if I'm obsessed about a particular piece.

No guessing - for the last 66 days I have averaged 2 hours 17 minutes 12 seconds a day. I keep track of my time with the "Hours" app on my phone.

I could never do that much if I wasn't retired...

Slacker, haha. You need to put in that extra 1000th of an hour, or 3.6 seconds and then you will have reached the golden number.

Seriously though, I couldn't give an exact number. During the week less, on weekends a little bit more. I don't log time for practicing. But if I were to add up all the practice hours and lesson time in month and take the daily average ... it could very well be close to 1.618 hours ;0

I practice about a half hour every day. More on weekends. My practice sessions are often short spurts but I get to the piano multiple times a day. Right before leaving for work in the morning, as soon as I come home from work, after dinner, again before bed. It adds up faster than you think. I find I really retain what I'm working on this way. I am always isolating what I want to focus on.

I'm practicing much better now than I used to when I was younger.

I work full time, am an avid reader of books, write fiction, and also help my elderly dad. I'm pretty busy. But piano has been such a joy. I'm so happy that I've found a practice regimen that is working for me and my schedule. It's so important to have a sustainable practice regimen. I think I really missed the boat on this in the past.

Joining MOYD was the best thing I could have ever done. I'm very early in but I can't wait to start next year's MOYD in January.

... as it applies to piano. The original version as you may recall (Seinfeld), applied to a different Domain, but our version Thankfully wink applies to piano.

20 minutes x 10 in a day is max ... blush

I use the same "oldschool" approach Svyatoslav Richter did. In the beginning of the year I 've chosen minimal avarage practice time I should maintain - 3 hours a day. I write the amount of time I practice in my notebook everyday. If I practice more than 3 hours, I write this additional time down as a "+". If less than 3 hours - than as "-". It looks like this:

2017

01.01 3.00
02.01 3.00
03.01 5.00 +2.00
04.01 2.40 +1.40
05.01 3.00
06.01 6.00 +4.40
07.01 2.00 +3.40
08.01 0.00 +0.40
09.01 1.00 -1.20
10.01 7.00 +2.40
and so on.

The Idea is to always increase positive balance or, at least, keep your avarage practice time amount at 3 hours a day.

I'm in the slacker group, I guess. I have occasionally done 2 hours on a weekend, but normally an hour is a lot for me. I probably do half an hour to 45 minutes most days. Some days I'm not able to get to the piano. Work and life get in the way, as others have said. Plus, I'm trying to keep two other instruments going (flute and voice). Luckily, I'm still able to progress.

I never time my practice. I'm more focused on maintaining concentration. If I start to feel my concentration flagging, I either stop or shift into just playing. I've found that continuing to practice when too fatigued will quickly turn into anti-practice.

I have read about Sviatoslav Richter's approach but don't think this is a good method for amateurs. I believe in regularity. Doing a little every day is much better than doing many hours some days and skipping other days as you have above.

In my practice I even break it down into specific activities such as sight-reading, pieces, exercises, and so on, and I make it a point not to skip any of the individual activities. This way I not only practice every day, I practice every aspect of piano playing every day.

I never keep track of how much time. Although, I play every day but seldom any longer than 20 mins at a stretch. Most of the time a few sessions like that.
But I always feel that I never practice enough, which is a bit frustrating.
I have the time but find it difficult to apply myself to do more.

My practice is more task focused as compared to time but I think on average I put in 1-2 hours a day. If it is a busy day I will sacrifice TV or internet time to make sure I put in practice. Anything is better than sitting on the couch of doom.

unlikely that S.Richter's m.o. is useful for most 'adult beginners', but if some seriously trained pianists are here posing as such, hope they're enjoying themselves.

Richter had instruction quite young from his father. he worked professionally before gaining entry to the top conservatory, when an exception was made for him. he'd been employed as the rehearsal pianist and assistant coach for the Odessa opera, where he'd sight read opera scores and make piano reductions on the spot, playing these while also coaching the singers. when his friend Abbado got married Richter got the other guests at the reception, who of course included singers, played such a reduction of la Traviata from memory while giving impromptu direction to the singers.

my practice times have gone back up to what they were before taking lessons, approaching and sometimes exceeding two hours each night. had admitted to the teacher who ended up firing me that taking on repertory above my playing ability took up part of my practice time(this was a matter of basic disclosure, was not going to push her to give me more difficult pieces). she kind of sneered, and said the results weren't so great in the past when she'd humored students and worked on things beyond their capacity ; I made it clear that was not my expectation from her. ended up putting in less time for practice as a result, 70-80 min. per night.
