Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Phoenix pianos are Steingraeber pianos that they modify. It would be interesting to hear a side-by-side comparison of the Phoenix pianos and the equivalent standard Steingraeber instrument.

Is it just me, or does this Phoenix piano have a guitar-like tone? The recording could be at fault as well.

Very interesting. Thanks for putting this video up Miguel. Considerable bass power. The recording gets better as it goes on,

Almaviva. Richard Dain and Udo Steingraeber have collaborated for many years. You can play Steingraber and Phoenix in the same room at Hurstwood Farm if you are ever in the UK. It is a bit like comparing apples and oranges if one has a spruce sound board and the other has carbon fibre. The typical Phoenix sound to my ear has a lot of individual note articulation.

I think Steingraeber are still using Renner actions, whereas the Phoenix use WNG. They feel quite a bit different too.

The other difference that can have a big impact is whether they are strung with stainless steel bass strings.

Phoenix use the patented bridge agraffe system - but I think Udo uses Richard Dain's system too at least in some pianos. It's been a year or so since I was able to make a comparison.

I hear what you are saying , it's the recording. Sounds "digitized".

this recording of the same night sounds much less processed.

The piano in the Gershwin is a Steinway D.

Hi Miguel,

The video is too dark it is hard to see the SB, but I think this is not a piano with a Carbon Fiber Sound Board. It reads on the fall-board Phoenix confused

It's definitely a carbon fiber soundboard, they add a maple veneer on top unlike some of their earlier pianos.
