My filthy rich and a bish of a client ask me to get him the best grand piano that money can buy. I'm in interior. He does not play a single note. His fake a$$ of a trophy wife / sugar baby plays. Barely. Poorly. This thing is going to be mainly for show. Status symbol thing. What a waste.

Been told. Stuart & Sons a couple of dozen million times. He is worth 66 million. BUT. Cheap and vulgar as fook. So. I have to be careful. Previous interior guy has been kicked out and I am the unlucky replacement. Not going to risk his stupid 200 grand on something stupid. Don't know why that but that 102 key thing sound a little out - back - y to me if you catch my drift.

Need you gurus to suggest me the best brand new concert grand that money can buy with at least 102 keys. Preferably more.

Preferably European. Will settle for American though. Good Day.

If your client insists on having 102 keys, I think you are limited to Stuart & Sons or Stephen Paulello (who makes the strings for Stuart & Sons). Paulello is French, if that's important.

If he want's a more well-known brand, go for a Fazioli. But it will only have 88 keys!

There's a wonderful Erard square piano with really exquisite casework for sale in the UK for around £1500.

If wifey can't play then this would be something that almost no-one else has, and would out-class a Stuart any day of the week at a fraction of the cost.

IMHO, Stuarts are great pianos to play if you have 3 feet - personally, I don't, and their piano stands are bits of bent tin with extra match-sticks. As for an all-round innovative concert grand piano that does all that Stuart does and more (other than pointless extra notes) - you'd be better off with a Hurstwood Steingraeber Pheonix - http://www.phoenixpianos.co.uk/phoenix-e272/

There's only one contender:
http://www.klavins-pianos.com/mod450_en.htm

More feasibly, its smaller predecessor - just wallow in that bass:

Truly, it's the Godfather of all pianos....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hF2r-PVj1gE grin

Mind you, it's only got 88 keys and is an upright. Very upright.......

If this is serious, then the safe answer would seem to be a Hamburg Steinway D.

Prestige name? Check.

European? Check

Expensive? Check

Recognizable to other snobs who know nothing about piano? Check

Visible on concert stages at galas and soirees that the friends will attend to be seen and gab through incessantly? Check

A really fine piano, that many would argue on the merits to be the best available at any price? Check

An assignment like this blends merits of the piano and appearances. For that purpose, the Hamburg Steinway D seems to fill the bill.

Thanks for the notes guys.

Currently looking at the most expensive ones from Blunther and Steinway and Kawai and Yamaha. Which of these with the most keys guys? Will probably settle with that one.

If you want an expensive prestige production piano with lots of keys, look at the Bösendorfer Imperial (97 keys), which has an impressive lineage and which great composers specifically wrote for, making use of its extra keys at the bottom range.

Blüthner, Steinway, Kawai and Yamaha grands all have 88 keys. That's the standard. If you consider that more keys = more status, look at Bösendorfer (92 or 97 keys) or the aforementioned Stuart or Paulello pianos with 102 keys.

As a pure status symbol, I'd say the Bösendorfer Imperial (97 keys) is the best bet. It's a well-known name for piano snobs and it's made in Austria.

Bösendorfer Imperial is my choice.

Bösendorfer also has some limited edition models. Not sure if any of those has 97 keys like Imperial.

Just looking at the dates is curious, I didn't read any posts. One thing that strikes me as odd is a lot of posts in the electronic and digital forum. That might be the reason someone would ask for the best concert grand on this forum. Just read the archives and you'll get lots of opinions on that.

Respectfully to the other posters who have responded with their opinion of the "best" concert grand piano, being the best piano doesn't seem to be the buying criteria in this case.

The guy wants an impressive piano that has a name everyone who might visit his abode will instantly recognize. I'd say that limits the choices to Steinway and Yamaha.

We denizens of PianoWorld know that a given Bosendorfer, M&H, etc., might be equal or better than a given Steinway - but the average Joe never heard of those brands.

My piano tuner has numerous filthy rich clients. He says those clients all have Steinways (which are hardly ever played).

A good analogy is if you see a beautiful motorcycle, you'd likely to expect it to be a Harley. Would you be disappointed if it turns out to be a Honda, even if that Honda might be a better bike than an equivalent Harley?

jcgee88, are you acknowledging then that the two companies that have poured the most resources into marketing, brand placement, designated brand artists, und so weiter, have convinced 'average Joes' that they're the best concert grands ? the quest here might be slightly different -- prestige and status.

R U Kidding?? The best piano is the one you like the best and having more than 88 keys has nothing to do with it. How bout a Rubinstein giant grand if its to impress?
