Can you elaborate on what's the difference between GF and GF compact? Also, is GF compact based on GF1 or GF2?

"(extended key pivot length)"

Presumably over RM3, but shorter than full GF/GF2. This is likely what KJ was referring to in the other thread about it would be nice if there wasn't such a difference between the rm3 and GF2.

I guess we'll see when (if?) the action cutaway appears in the full content to come soon.

I wonder if GF compact is simply a rename of RM3II ... and the sounds have been downgraded from HI-XL to PHI??

Surprise surprise, for those not expecting a change in the mechanics (myself included). Maybe this will make the (my) list as a possible controller. And maybe that means a VPC2 will come out as well with the GFC action.
Very much looking forward to pictures of the action. And to play it, but it may take over a year for that to happen.

The CA48 is the first Kawai digital piano to utilise the brand new Grand Feel Compact wooden-key keyboard action. As its name suggest, the GF Compact action has been designed to reproduce the authentic touch weight characteristics of the industry-leading Grand Feel keyboard actions, within a smaller form factor.
The new action retains the long wooden keysticks used for all 88 black and white keys, and the familiar seesaw mechanism employed by acoustic grand piano actions for centuries. However, despite its smaller unit size, GF Compact features an extended key pivot length, providing a more consistent touch weight when playing towards the rear of the keyboard. This crucial detail ensures the new CA48 delivers the most realistic playing experience in its class, surpassing even the venerable RM3 Grand actions utilised by its predecessors.
As with all modern wooden-key Kawai actions, Grand Feel Compact incorporates grade-weighted hammers, bass region counterweights, and let-off simulation for added authenticity, while its accurate triple-sensor key detection system allows rapidly repeated notes such as trills to be performed smoothly, without unnatural breaks in sound.

Priceless picture, CyberGene. That gives us an estimate pivot length of 21.5cm. And offset pivots for the black keys which is very good. This is already a very manageable pivot length, significant improvement over the RM3-II in the VPC1. I'm very curious to see how they feel.
For reference, Roland keys are 22, Yamaha's were 21.5 (or 21) if I'm not mistaken, the RH3 I believe to be around 20.5, the RM3-ii was 19.5 I believe?!
I'm starting to forget the numbers, knew them by heart 2 years ago. So please correct me if I'm wrong.
Bottom line, I find this number is good enough, whereas I wasn't pleased with the pivot of the CA17 (VPC1).
If the feel is pleasing as well, I could see this as a piano controller with included stand, especially since it is supposed to be priced lower than the CA17 was. The top can act as table for the display and monitors (but using isolation pads will be necessary for decent sound). All this for 300-350 euros more than the VPC1 if my estimation is right.

I am sure this action is not created for the purpose of (only) CA48. Lesser models in the Kawai range are usually created from last-gen technologies and it doesn't make sense to design an entirely new compact action for that. Do you follow my thought? wink Yes, this is most probably created with VPC2 in mind because that was the most often requested feature - GF in VPC, however GF is a bit large to put in a VPC-style of piano. Hence GF compact - longer pivot length. Hopefully I am right smile

Well thought!
They may also have in mind a more compact stage piano than the MP11, that would still feature a wooden action.

Would make an excellent controller in addition to the very decent voices already there from the CA17, if they're the same. Apart from one omission.
No audio input . . . . ?

If it's not there, too late for this generation. But I don't expect it would've sounded too good for VST playback, anyway. Maybe just for playing along to an external source.

This is very exciting! Earlier this year I asked here for recommendations for a digital piano that would go into our then-planned man-shed garden studio. The building is now complete and we'll soon be buying the piano. If the CA48 is available at the price point of the CA17, but with a keyboard more like that of the CA67, that would fit our needs/desires to a T!

Any idea as to when the CA48 might become available in the UK market? The Japanese ASCII article that James linked to in the other new Kawai thread quotes a release date of November 10. Sure hope it will be here for the Christmas shopping season.

Tangenting from the pivot point slightly (which does indeed appear to be between rm3 and full GF). I note the far end of the keystick that actuates the hammer is no longer a teflonesq pad stuck to the top but appears to be a whole cap of plastic stuck on the end of the keystick.

Given the pads were one of the issues in the GF key clinic this might be a durability improvement? I had wondered if certain things like this might also get changed on GF2 without actually warranting a change in name.

Don't say this. You will encourage the engineers and managers at Kawai to think it's true. It's not. The VPC is a piano for digital piano users who are unwilling to make compromises--which is why they insist on using a VST. It's not a particularly portable piano, so the action should be consistent with the intended market and not make compromises. GF compact is a compromise. If they compromise on anything with the VPC2, they should compromise on the portability and give us a full length GF or GF2 action.

You are probably right that this is what Kawai engineers are thinking. I just don't want you to encourage them to think that way.

Hi James. I don't suppose there's any chance of this CA48 showing up in the U.S.?

I was thinking the same thing. The USA won't get the CA48.

All these years playing and I still consider myself a novice.
