I have used the Music Journal practice app for a couple of years now, and was upset to learn that when I updated to iOS 11 that it would no longer work. I’ve downloaded Pro musica app but am not sure if I like it. It seems more complicated than I need for my purposes. I prefer to keep my notes in a handwritten journal, but liked the app for tracking time spent etc. What apps are others using? What do you like about them?

What is there in the practice apps that you like? Or, perhaps I should ask: what do they do for you?

Regards,

I can't envisage any situation in which an app - any app - would enhance my piano playing and practising. I don't even bother to keep time of how long I spend at the piano. It takes as long as it takes. Or, to put it another way, I play for as long as I feel like playing. Or until my stomach rumbling tells me it's time for dinner (or breakfast, or lunch, or tea, or supper, depending on what time of the day it is. We have 'tea' here across the pond wink ).

But hey, what do I know? An app (short for apple) is just a fruit to me. Personally, I wouldn't eat it. There are much tastier fruits around.

"I don't play accurately - anyone can play accurately - but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned, sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life."

I mostly used it to keep track of time spent on pieces, technique etc. The app I was using produced a variety of graphs which gave me a quick overview of how I was allotting my time. I could quickly see if I had been neglecting something. I know I could do the same thing with a notebook or calendar, but I somehow found the format often helped motivate me to put in extra time when I might have otherwise stopped. There was also a built in metronome which I liked.

I used to use Music Journal too. I tried contacting the author to ask about updates, but no response.

So I've been using "Hours". Not intended for music practice, but keeping track of the hours that you work on projects. It works OK, and there is a free version, but not that great for music practice. Music Journal would tell you at a glance how long its been since you practiced something, which is an excellent reminder about keeping pieces under your fingers - nothing like that in Hours. I suppose any app designed to keep track of hours could be made to work.

I like using an app to keep of practice time. It serves as a visual reminder of the projects I have ongoing so I don't forget to work on something. And there is a sense of accomplishment to know I have spent X hours on a particular project. If I get caught up in something, I can look at the phone and see, "Oh, it's been 33 minutes on this, I need to move on". Or if I get interrupted I can check later and see, "I only spent 6 minutes on the fugue - need to do more later".

I could do it on paper - I used to do it that way. But using an app is better for me.

Sam
