So Roland Brought out the RD-2000 about a month after I left the company. Besides a couple quick bashes under headphones at Roland Canada's head office over the course of the last 8 or so months, I haven't really taken the time to dig deep. What I have heard on those quick tryouts, has been bloody impressive.
I will give my impressions once the madness of launching the new Nikon D850 dies down and I have a good chance to dig in to the piano..
I can't believe it took me this long to finally get my hands on this piano. I was really struggling to decide whether it would be the FP-90 or the RD-2000, and my true desire won out in the end. Then the busyness of the new career took hold, and it hit the back burner for a bit.
Anyone have a favorite piano tone they've discovered? I liked the Studio Grand (#34) on the RD800 very much, and am hoping to find its equivalent on the RD-2000.
Anyways, will check back in soon.
Your former Roland guy, signing off for now.

Congrats Jay! I've opted for FP90 but RD2000 is for sure superior on the quantity of features and tones. Not found yet my preferred tone or customized one, I'm still in the experimenting phase with little time to dig in. Would be interesting to share views on customized tones.

For sure!
Once I have had a chance to dig into the Piano Designer, and really make some tweaks, I will share some ideas.

JayRoland,
Any chance of someone at Roland taking up your former role at Pianoworld?
Your presence is missed around here.
Thanks, bruce

Thanks, bruce Not sure Bruce. For me it was a pretty much an unpaid passion project. Thank you for your kind words. Jay

Jay I look forward to it. I have ordered one and expect to put my hands on it next week. First thing I will do is trying to make its slow strings to sound as good as ES8's when layered with a piano sound. ES8's slow strings has different decays depending on damper pedal and they sound fantastic with piano sounds even with the default setting (I have not tried to change anything, not even know if it is possible). I want to try that on the RD2000 and I even expect to have better effects, given RD's parameters adjustability. I remember in the pre Internet times some popular (or maybe not so popular) synthesizers (Casio CZ5/CZ1, Yamaha DX7, Rolands etc.) owners published some interesting (sometimes not) patches they created on some keyboard magazines. I wonder if it is done nowadays. Next topic for research.

If you update the RD 2000's operating system, be sure to use the Computer \ Memory port and not the Update port.
The online instructions mention that but do not go out of their way to call that piece of information to your attention; it's counter-intuitive.

Congratulations! I haven't attempted to connect Piano Designer to the RD-2000 but I would be very interested in doing so. Without native bluetooth like the FP-90, I figured it would be too great a technical challenge for me. After you have had the time to experiment with your new RD-2000, please let us know your setup and any gizmos or cables that you bought to make PD work. Thanks.

Enjoy! The RD-2000 is a blast. I particularly enjoy Stage Concert, Deep Concert, and Contemp Concerto.
Tons of great synth sounds, if you're into that sort of thing.

I have no intention of using the app. Just the built in Editing on the RD. I didn't often use the app except for demoing the HP Series, where accessing the various things was more of a PITA than making the connection, just to show the breadth of variation on the Piano tones. Groovy. I have nothing constructive, just want to say it's great to get an update, and I'm looking forward your impressions of it. Hope everything's going well. (Switching to cameras, the D850 looks astonishing, and it sounds like Nikon has some interesting things in the works. I imagine it's an exciting time to be there).

Having had a pre-production D850 in my hands for even a short while, I can tell you that it is without a doubt, the best DSLR Nikon (and i would argue, ANYONE) has ever made. I get my production sample next week. 4 stop shadow pull on a JPEG shot @ ISO64 4 stops under on purpose, with no noise? Yes. Please. Jay

I used to do a lot of low light photography (with film), so the possibilities with a camera that capable are astounding. I've been more of a casual photographer the last few years and have been using a mirrorless, but I sometimes miss the days when I'd head out at night with an SLR rig. For instance I remember ducking behind a concrete barrier on an extremely cold night and aiming a tripod-mounted camera up at a cathedral while a guy below me shouted expletives.

Hey Jay so good to see you here again! You have been missed! Congratulations on your new piano; will be interested to hear about it when you get it. Re cameras-I have a Canon 5D Mark II, once considered state-of-the-art (when I purchased it) and now basically obsolete, sigh. I still love the full-frame, but the camera is now considered to be sadly lacking compared to the newer DSLRs. How quickly things change. I'm still loving my LX-7, especially since the intermittent lid switch problem has been fixed. Hope to see more of you around here!

In between events and shoots. I am glad to hear that your LX-7 is back to good! Make no mistake though. The Canon 5D series was a digital revolution. My wife still shoots her 5DmkII all the time on pro work, when I don't have gear available to her. It's still a pretty capable camera. Although, like with digital pianos, time marches on; the utility of the devices of yesteryear doesn't diminish. They always do what they did well. Jay

Jay Thanks for the positive words about the 5D Mark II. I have some pretty good lenses for it & plan to keep using it indefinitely, as my skills are not nearly good enough to exploit its capabilities (& probably never will be). Same w/ my piano; glad it has the 10-year warranty as I plan to keep it at least that long if not longer. I still really enjoy hearing about new gear in both areas though!

I have a 30+ year History with Nikon, broken up briefly by a flirtation with the 5D Classic. Nikon brought out the D700 and brought me home shortly thereafter.
Glass is everything though. And it doesn't wear out or get upgraded/change like a digital sensor. if it is EF series glass, it is with you for life.

Hi Jay, I always loved Nikon stuff and I have D80 by myself, and I think it's still great body, even though it's 10 years old. Unless you are doing pictures in low light, I see no point for any change for my amateur practice. I just grown up from have better and better stuff. Still, and forvever, that most important thing it the persons behind the lens Since 2012 I lost my interest in photography due to many reasons, but I would never suspect than there anyone will produce 48 mega-pixel full frame sensor. I remember that few years only Hasselblad (and maybe some competition of similar level) had 60mp camera, but their sensor are bigger than full frame if I' not wrong. My lens in 18-105 VR and it's really good for amateur needs who want to have a good pictures and have some fun from photography. I have also 70-300, but this lens is not good, but it cost same as stand for Roland piano
