"Technicians have lauded the performance of Steinway verticals, but complained that they were difficult pianos to tune and unexpectedly jumped out of tune."

That's interesting. I once asked my technician what pianos he thought kept their tune best and he said Steinway uprights. Although he specifically said old Steinway uprights, so maybe there's a difference.

But you didn't read the next sentence that says this is no longer the case.

Although many would agree with a lot of the pianos listed in this article, I don't think it's a good idea to give the article much credibility since it's written by a delaership that sells several of the pianos mentioned. In addition, if my memory is correct, some of the information is lifted word for word from The Piano Buyer.

Your memory is correct, pianoloverus. Much of the text is verbatim from The Piano Buyer.

Wouldn't that be called ... plagiarism? Couldn't that be ... actionable?

We are aware that much of this article was copied from Piano Buyer. In a way, it is somewhat flattering, but we don't encourage the practice.

I don't see it as flattering at all, unless you like footprints on your face. If they explicitly gave credit (cited the source), that could be construed as flattering. But if the copying is extensive, PB should have to agree to the use, and could claim some payment.

Anybody who has as extensively traveled as I have, knows the factories and played most of the pianos there, knows that the article is bogus. For example, I once played a certain Steinberg piano in a Nuremberg store which took me completely by surprise and knocked my socks off. Plus there have been others. Pfeiffers anybody?
There's really no consistency of "who's best". It's still very much a matter of an individual piano. Even the Germans would admit this. Plus there's some names included that have, outside perhaps 1 or 2 select, limited production models, absolutely no place in this.
Nice try, but saying nothing, going nowhere.
Enjoy whatever you have.

Norbert

What names have absolutely no place on this list, Norbert?

Really these lists are very subjective. We all have our own top 10, and few of us would agree.

if you mean the top 10 list has to match the same order and include the exact same list of pianos than, of course, there will be little agreement. But OTOH I think many of the pianos on the list would appear on most people's list of the top 10. Just like most would include Bach or Beethoven among their top 10 composers.

If this was true than almost all the discussion on the Piano Forum would be worthless. The only relevant contributors would be those who had heard/played the individual piano being discussed. Ranking lists aren't about outlier examples that may have impressed someone, they're about making generalizations.

This is a forum for all tastes. My original post was merely to link to basic information on high end uprights.
Perhaps your association with a brand not on the list has prompted your chide comment.

This doesn't look like a current article because in the Yamaha section, they do not mention the YUS series, which sits in between the SU7 and the U Series.

I think that the price for pianos in this list is nowhere near real price (maybe for US market). For example, price for Steingraeber 130T-sfm is 26.730e without optional equipment. This is a price if you order directly from Steingraeber factory. Similar is for other pianos except Steinway. They have higher price.
