Aha! I see. Thanks loads for pointing out those photos. That's the sort of thing that I'll never see in real life, so I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to show them to me.

It's a clever way to handle that issue, but I wonder if anyone ever got carried away with long keyboard jumps and set his sheet music on fire. smile

Music for the [not so Royal] Fireworks, if you can Handel it!

Cheers!

Goodness gracious, I was playing Jerry Lee Lewis's Great Balls of Fire last night. smile

I really was, too. Hope that's wasn't prescient.

Thanks for the pictures XenondiFluoride - really quite interesting and something I had never thought about before. Looking at my piano, those sections you're talking about don't slide, but they do extend quite a bit further in front of the music stand than most modern pianos. Presumably for the same reason - to allow candles/lamps to be placed in a way to illuminate the music.

I know several pianists who use what are officially called "piano lamps" on one side of the music stand. Depending on their height, the length of the arm, the type of illumination and the weight of the base compared to the weight of the lamp-head and arm, they can be a reasonable solution to lighting music.

Regards,

OP: I need a lamp for around $25 to $50. I've seen some priced at $250. Ridiculous!
Answer A: Here's one for $289.
Answer B: Here's one for $320.
(Gee thanks.) frown

Anyway ...

aflocka: You didn't say whether you have an upright or a grand. For an upright this lamp could be set on the top lid. It's only $28 from Target: Crosby Schoolhouse desk lamp

From the title, it's a grand.

There's always IKEA. If I have to go with a floor lamp someday, I might consider the "Barometer".

Having owned 2 clamp on bed lights, a floor lamp and a ceiling fixture from IKEA, I advise choosing carefully when buying lighting from IKEA. They tend towards flimsyness and sometimes use bulbs that are not common here in the US.

This one is from Lowe's but other stores carry something similar and they can be positioned to provide good lighting across the front of the piano and the music desk
