I am currently doing the Brahms Exercises. I love Brahms, and would love to spend the next couple years learning his works.
In college, Brahms was considered my thing, feeling a bit naive to have believed that, but what can you do? Live and learn.
I started with the head on approach and jumped into the first exercise. The fingerlings are easy, just keep a pattern, and I can do 4 against 3 and vice versa, but keeping it up for the exercise is proving to be difficult.
Anyone have any practice tips to help master some of these difficulties?

Chain them together? Start with one 4 against 3 group, then do two, then three, etc.???

It sounds like you are having trouble with stamina, physical or mental or both. That takes exercise. You also need to take care of yourself, making sure you are eating and resting properly.

Someone, maybe Alfred Brendel, opined that Brahms wrote his 51 Exercises as a practical joke on the people who spent too much time on Czerny et al. (That doesn't mean that they aren't worth studying.)

I had never heard that, but given that Brahms was not without a sense of humour ... Regards,

May have hit the nail on the head. My mental stamina has definitely taken a hit in recent years. I'm not that much older(31) but the days of getting by unhealthy are behind me for sure. When I take the time for watching diet, get exercise, and rest I am far less frustrated.
