It's easy to grab my guitar and throw it in the back of the car for a road trip, but...can't do that with my Yamaha U3, haha, nor do I want to lug around my Nord Piano. Anyone have a preferred little portable keyboard that has decent sound and fun features?

Hi

When I was in a band some years ago I used to lug around a lot of gear. Now I only jam in a bar once a week, for fun. I couldn't be bothered to take all my 'proper' gear down there (big keyboard amp, 88 note stage Piano, Hammond organ, a fold up column keyboard stand etc etc.

So I bought a Casio WK-7600 workstation keyboard and Behringer 15w amp. I can carry both these, a stand under my arms to the bar in one trip.

The keyboard is not like a real Piano, or even a good digital Piano, but it produces some nice sounds and critically its very cheap for what you get (76 notes). It has drawbars, which was the clincher for me. I drive a Fiat Panda (not a big car!) and it fits snugly across the back seat. And if you wanted to, you could run it on batteries, though I haven't tried that.

I've been using mine for doing this for about 7 months now and don't even think about using anything else now.

I'd recommend trying one though as they are not everyone's taste!

Cheers

Roland Go Piano (+iPhone, iPad or Laptop)
Korg Kross 61
Yamaha S650
Korg Taktile 49

... and over US$2k but portable ...
Hammond SK1
Nord Electro 5D 61

... and then there are all those teeny-weeny mini boutique synths being made by Roland, Yamaha, Morg etc. but too many to keep track.

As you can see, there are tons of possibilities. And this has been a topic that has been discussed many times before, so you can search some older threads. But to narrow down suggestions, it would be good to be a little more specific about your needs. Does it have to have built-in sounds, or would it be okay if it triggered sounds in some other device that you might have with you, like an iPhone, iPad, or laptop? Are these specific constraints in size, weight, or budget? Do you want it to have built in speakers? Do you want it to have at least a certain number of keys? Do you want it to run on batteries? Anything you can think of that you might prefer...
