Hello everybody. I have recently purchased an used Roland FP-8 stage piano. It came from Australia , and it is about 10 years old, that is what the seller had told me. I have never seen this kind of instrument before, so I would appreciate if you could give me some information about it. Was it a good piano earlier, what is it"s reputation right now etc.? I have paid 350 $ for it, and I don"t find it to be expencive at all. I shall use it for some home playing, nothing more than that. Thanks in advance for your responses.

I used to have one of these many years ago...and I loved it. Solid metal frame. Great action. Not many sounds but the sounds that were there were quality. My only complaint was, obviously, the weight. It was a heavy bugger. I had a nice little Roland sound module that I plugged into it via MIDI that gave me extra voices.

I eventually sold it because, at the time, I wanted rhythms. Foolish me. They are hard to find now. Did you get the white, red, or black one?

Regards,
billmc

The FP-8 is on my wish list for vintage equipment - I always like that one when I saw it in the store. I have to think it's more like 15 years old though. The one thing I know about them is that they have issues with the key weighs coming loose.

that is a great price !

Congrats !

The only other thing that *might* be an issue is that, if I recall, it only had 28 note polyphony. It never caused me any problems, but, then, I don't play really fast music either. laugh

It is a dark gray one. It has very nice design, I like it more than nowadays DP-ies. In my country, people are used to Yamaha, or Kawai , almost no one has Roland. That is why I asked you folks.

I owned one. It wasn't a sampled sound. I think it came from the same sound source as MKS-20 (which I also owned.) I remember liking the electric piano sound. For it's time, it had a pretty nice piano sound. It has scifi look to it. At the time I owned it, I didn't have an acoustic. Do I wish I kept it - NO. I never had the money or the room to keep keyboards I got tired of.

Thanks for your comments. Yesterday I have connected it to amplifier and speakers, and it has much better tonne that way. It is obviously a stage piano.

Hi, I too have bought an old Roland fp-8. I like the punchy attack adn feel. I have broken about 6 hammers though and find I may still have more going soon. I have also just purchased a Second hand Korg SP-250. This does a very good live job and I am taking it to the UAE to do a 6 Month Gig with a 3 Piece Band. I paid R4000.00 for the Roland and R 5000.00 for the Korg with Carry Bag and Stand and Pedal. Hope you have had good results from yours,
Clive

I too had an FP8. Modernistic design with speaker grill. Since I previously had an MKS-20 I was used to sound. I remember the action being quite bouncy. My grey tiger cat used to love sleeping on it so he matched the color nicely.

The FP-8 is 25 years old, the manual is "Copylight" 1991. Cue the "Engrish" jokes grin

It's because the fp8 is 25 years old. Came out around this time in 1991 according to some old hands. It really is very similar in appearance to its current successor, the fp80. Remarkable! Except back then, you could get it in a nice red colour as well as black or white.

PS I'm always surprised at the negative reactions the resurrection of old threads seems to arouse. It's almost as if the perpetrator has committed some sort of socal faux pas or even a morally reprehensible act - like digging up a grave in the dead of night.

But it's just a healthy regard for recent history afaics......where's the harm? Why the shocked suspicion to opening up old threads?

Hi I'm from Brazil. I bought FP8 a few years ago. I had problems on the audio card and I recovered and he switched on and changed the banks on the display, only no sounds. He stood for a long time, and I think he erased the sounds of memory. Would you rewrite them via midi? If positive, how would you do it? Thank you.
