I've been shopping on Craigslist for used console or spinets.

I'm curious why some of the pianos feel so damn sticky to touch and play. Is that what ivory keys feel like?

Consoles and spinets do not have ivory keys, unless you are considering one too old to be considered. They are probably dirty.

Actually, some pianist/players prefer a sticky/grippy key feel. I prefer a grippy/gripy(?) key as apposed to a more slippery key top.

I agree with BDB in that it is probably due to the keys being dirty/gummy.

The ones I'm considering are in the 40s to 70's range.

You're not playing ivory keys, then. Probably they're dirty. All it takes is a few spilled sodas... a few practices with pizza greasy hands... all on some ageing plastic keytops, and bingo - you've got it.
