used kimball or baldwin (20 yrs old)? #266400

I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts re: either 40" console for a beginner, or if it is completely dependent on each piano's individual condition. Used kimball is approx $200 more but outer appearance is nicer. Have only tried the Baldwin so far. Should I make the trip to see the Kimball? Thanks.

Assuming they've been adequately maintained, I think this is a fair generalization:

The Kimball might be nicer furniture, but the Baldwin is almost certainly a higher quality instrument.

Rest assured the Baldwin IS the better make. we can't speak to the condition of either without seeing them (hire a tech), but if all else equal, the Baldwin should easily be worth more than a Kimball. kimball was a furnature maker that made pianos...sort of. laugh

If the Baldwin has a drop action, go for the Kimball.

I'm going to respectfully disagree. Tech's don't like to work on drop actions. I completely understand this. The good news is, you'll tune once or twice a year and rarely have to have the action looked at. Musically, the Baldwin will sound AND feel superior to the Kimball. Even with a drop action, the Baldwin will outperform a Kimball console of the same vintage. As long as tone matters to you, the Kimball is inferior and misses the cut. frown

Thanks for the replies! I'm having a tech check out the Baldwin tomorrow and, all being well, bringing it home. You've boosted my confidence in my decision.

Thanks again, everyone! The Baldwin, which is now in my home, did not have a drop action. The tech valued it between $900 and $1000. I paid $300 for the piano, and another $375 for tech and mover, so that should leave me some $ for tuning and I'll still "break even." He said the Baldwin was "built like a tank." When I mentioned the Kimball, he laughed and said he suspected that if I had bought it, a lot of tuners would not have returned my calls. He feels the Baldwin will serve us very well for years to come. Sooo...I truly appreciate the help, and we are very happy with our purchase!
