Hi, just found a couple of days to record first movement of beethoven's moonlight sonata. In a fantastic five minute video of Barenboim he explains how this piece, although called moonlight by someone after Beethoven died, feels to him more like a funeral due to its martial pacing.

Although I corrected a couple of mistakes thanks to my friend MIDI, I'm not particularly proud due to slips and shaping and just want to go ahead in the 40 pieces challenge.

1. Bach prelude in C major BWV 846. BTK Book I
2. Bach Minuett G major BWV 114 Ana Magdalena notebook
3. Burgmuller. op 100 candeur.
4. Burgmuller op 100 Arabesque.
5. Burgmuller op 100 Limpid stream
6. Clementi op 36 n1 Allegro
7. Burgmuller op 100 Pastoral
8. Coldplay Postcards from far away
9. Schumann op 68 n10 Frohlicher landmann
10 . Czerny op 599 83
11. Phillipe Glass glassworks
12. Bach prelude E minor BWV 938
13. Chopin waltz sostenuto in Eb KK IVb n 10
14. Kabalebsky Novelette op 27 n 25
15. Beethoven op27.2 Adagio sostenuto (moonlight sonata)

There's been some discussion of Pianist Magazine recently. They have a limited time Back Issues Sale on right now - only $2.99 an issue, instead of $6.99. (I bought two years worth!) This is the page for the USA:

I thoroughly enjoyed learning the 3 pieces I managed to record this week. There are challenges in each of them: the rapid-fire repeated C notes on the left hand in B section for the Burgmuller piece; the evenness/legato and light touch on the left hand for the Streabbog piece (didn't do very well on the last couple of acciaccatura in the melody line); the balance between the counterpoint of both hands for the Bach piece. I am at a point where I think I want to learn more complex pieces, so I will start exploring that while I am focusing on completing my goal to finish learning the remaining pieces in those 2 opuses. Also, I will start learning pieces in other styles.

From Streabbog Op. 63 (Completed):
1 - 12) No. 1 - No. 12 [Playlist in Soundcloud]

From Burgmuller Op. 100:
13 - 28) No. 1 - No. 16 [Playlist]
29) No. 17 - La Babillarde [Soundcloud]

From Streabbog Op. 64:
30 - 32) No. 1 - No. 3 [Playlist]
33) No. 4 - The Orphan [Soundcloud]

34) Bach/Petzold - Minuet in G Major, BWV Anh. 114 [Soundcloud]
35) Bach/Petzold - Minuet in G Minor, BWV Anh. 115 [Soundcloud]
36) J. S. Bach - Minuet in G Major, BWV Anh. 116 [Soundcloud]
37) Clementi - Sonatina Op. 36 No. 1, 1st Movement [Soundcloud]
38) Clementi - Sonatina Op. 36 No. 1, 2nd Movement [Soundcloud]
39) Clementi - Sonatina Op. 36 No. 1, 3rd Movement [Souncloud]
40) Christian Gottlob Neefe - Allegretto in C Major [Soundcloud]
41) Haydn - Little Serenade [Soundcloud]
42) J. S. Bach - Musette in D Major, BWV Anh. 126 [Soundcloud]
43) Mozart - Minuet in G Major, K.1/1e [Soundcloud]
44) J. S. Bach - Minuet in D Minor, BWV Anh. 132 [Soundcloud]

A new one I've been working on with my teacher. No recording for now. I think I'll do this for the online recital next month.

Link to my first 20 pieces

21. Gavotte - Handel, Fundamental Keys
22. Minuet - Reinagle, Fundamental Keys
23. Allegro Moderato - Faber, Faber Adult PA 2
24. Evening Song - Chovan, Fundamental Keys
25. Minuetto - Turk, Fundamental Keys
26. Canzonetta - Horvath, Fundamental Keys
27. Niagara Falls - Faber, Faber Adult PA 2
28. O Sole Mio - di Capua (arr), Faber Adult PA 2
29. Yellow Bird[ - West Indies folk song (arr), Faber Adult PA 2
30. Village Dance - Wohlfahrt, Fundamental Keys
31. Carefree - Turk, Fundamental Keys

I've been away on a trip, where I took my cheap, small Casio keyboard to continue practice on Bach BMV Anh 116 in the hotels, but I haven't had much time for anything else until I returned last week. I'm at the (rough) polishing stage with the Bach, which I think I'll submit for the online recital next month (my first), but it is definitely taking some time to get there. As a break, I started adding some Fundamental Keys pieces again, and I will resume soon with Faber Adult book two, as I've neglected it since becoming infatuated with the Bach minuet smile. Also hope to find a teacher soon, as I think I'm ready and my schedule has settled down for the summer!

Bwahahahaha!

I've got 7 printed pieces left in my binder that I'm struggling to decide which one to do. I'm not sure how many are left in that Grade 1 Book which I should probably look at later.

3 Purcell pieces, 3 Tchaikovsky pieces and 1 Wilm. Purcell has a lot of grace notes that are tripping me up, Tchaikovsky has some left hand hopping for me coz my fingers aren't long enough and Wilm reminds me of Schumann's Melody that tried to make my brain implode when I first tried it. So I'm not sure if I'm going to go after one of those next or go back to the folders on my computer and pick and choose.

ROSEWOOD17, did you just start in April of this year? You have moved along well. I'm in pg 45 or so in Alfred and haven't dreamed of trying to join this 40 club yet. You sound like you have great practice habits. Share please, Great Job, mb

carolinakeys Thanks! I did take lessons as a child but that was 50 years ago and I remember very little--which is why my teacher (after pre-testing me) felt it was appropriate to start back at the very beginning when I started taking lessons from her in April.

I do practice quite a bit throughout the day, but I am able to do this because I am retired. I don't really know exactly how much it adds up to (I don't keep track), but I think it is probably at least a couple of hours a day, because I really enjoy it. (I could never practice this much if I were still working all day and coming home exhausted.) I would say just enjoy the process! (That's what my teacher says to me: "Enjoy the process!") smile

As for the 40 Pieces a Year Club, if you go back to my first post in this thread, I included lots of the very early pieces from Alfred's Book 1, because they were pieces that I had to practice in order to master, so I felt like they could legitimately be included (at first I was shy about submitting such short pieces but now I know it's OK, because it isn't a competition or anything like that). I think people on this forum understand that we are all at different levels and if the people who are just starting out were only allowed to list the intricate & technically demanding kinds of pieces that some of the more experienced people are able to post, we "beginner-beginners" would not get to participate! I think it is expected that everyone participates at his or her own level, so I think you should feel very comfortable listing your pieces!

I do so enjoy the process. I've played guitar for years so not completely in the dark but just learned to read. I know a lot of geet pickers like that. I do want to start submitting to the 40 club. I gotta get by that shyness you (Rosewood) spoke of. Thanks for the input.

You all are doing great! I'm taking a few days off from the piano as I had dental work yesterday and my head is still a little fuzzy from the procedure and the meds. I'm working on a piece by Schmoll called Confidence. At first I only had issues with the 2nd to last bar and now that I have that right I mess up in different spots before that.

Last week I kind of got obsessed by a Styx piece called Khedive. Super fast piano playing by Lawrence Gowan that I managed to slow down to 12.5% of the original speed and have gotten the notes that are played. I swear there's no way I'll ever be able to play it at speed it's super fast.

Absolutely beautiful playing on the Piazolla. I kept drifting off into a fantasy about playing that well, myself, one day. Very nice!
