Oops -- Norfolk was 2016, and _Lancaster, PA_ is 2018 (much easier for me to get to than St Louis!) -- see you there!

I'd particularly like to hear about Kent Swafford's 21st-Century Tuning class.

Greetings from St. Louis,

This is my first PTG national. It is exciting and exhausting. A few random tidbits before I park it it for the night:

- great concert just finished. Rach, Schubert, and more on a Shigeru EX. Large group from Kawai here as part of IAPBT. KawaiDon among them.

-Joplin concert last night on a Bluthner concert grandfrom Reeder. The also have a beautiful Steinway D ('83) and a Mason Style 9.

- Chupps Piano is showing a rebuilt Steinway A-Iii from 1918 in oak that is drool worthy.

- tried a Petrof Pasat 225 cm. Lovely tone.

- tried the Hailun 178 grand and the H5-P upright. Nice pianos. They also have the 159 grand which has a strong bass for this small grand. Got to spend some time with Basilios, Joe, Joanna, and a couple of the otherPetrof and Hailun folks.

- spent some time with my friend David Carpenter at the Veritunerstand. The other major ETDs are also there.

- there are about 125 classes, five periods, starting at 8 AM and ending at 7. Pianos inside and out.

- met Bill Bremer. Hope to meet others in the next two days.

All for now

I'll be wondering this afternoon. Maybe with Bill Bremmer.

What will you be wondering about while wandering about?

Another great day.

Attended a morning long class on aural tuning strategy and musicianship by Rick Butler.

Afternoon class on steps to improve low-end pianos to make them playable and satisfying to customers. This means spinets, old uprights and the like. Instructor discussed several steps that give good results with relatively little time and material cost.

Purchased the Verituner iPad app. There is a conference promo but only for attendees and it expires tommorow.

Yamaha reception preceded by the P
TG barbershop chorus.

Forgot to mention, the M&H noted above is a screw stringer. Looks brand new and fascinating.

Have had a great time!

Keith Akins (kpembrook here) Class on ear training for voicing was one of the classes I attended, and since Keith is my first mentor I met after joining PW as a novice, I wanted to meet him as well as Ari Isaac who is the maker of the hammers I enjoy in my Baldwin L. While I had hoped he class would cover issues such as the sound problems covered by poorly mated strings, bad pinning, overly hard or soft hammers, it was an excellent intro to understanding customers descriptions of what they want, and safe and effective ways to (possibly) deliver that through side needling voicling techniques. The class didn't have enough time... a common problem with a lot of the classes I attended.

I was told by several folks who saw my "new member" badge that I needed to attend the competency playground, so I did just that and mad proud to say I did all the stations and earned my "gold star" .. well, a certificate.

I had memorized two Brahms Intermezzos, Debussy Menuet from the Suite Bergamasque, Joplin's Gladiolus Rag, and Bach's P&F in F#minor from book two, and so played many fine pianos. My dream is still a Mason and Hamlin BB with the WNG action. Such fine sound. I briefly thought about changing the shipping label to my home address, but somehow I felt that would be discovered. 👅

Will leave after my last class today and head back to Bowling Green, my home.

Life is GOOD.

Saturday evening. Final banquet in one half hour. Hard to believe it is almost over. About 100 pianos being broken down, wrapped up, and rolled away, I could take about five.

Today I met Ed Foote, Del Fandrich, and Don Manino, amomg others.

One of the real joys was some of the great ad hoc piano playing. Walking by or sitting on a balcony above the exhibit hall, one could hear Chopin etudes, Beethoven, Brahms, Joplin, Rach, and much more played on some great pianos old and new.

Well the PTG convention went very well! I think we had 724ish(?) people attend. I saw a lot of new members and met a lot of people that were attending the convention for the first time, which was very cool! I spent most of the time in the exam rooms. I trained and ended up becoming a TEC (Technician Examiner Certified). I was able to make it to 2 classes. I ended up tuning 3 pianos in the exhibit hall last minute. A booth needed a technician to tune for them and I offered. I enjoyed the Scott Jones piano bar, Kawai concert and Yamaha reception. Yoshi did a very good job prepping the Shigeru Kawai concert grand. If you didn't have a chance to play it, make sure you do next year! I liked the hotel and did a ton of walking! My feet were sore all week. We also had a PTI (Piano Technicians International Facebook page) meet up. It was cool to put names to faces, although I'm bad with names. I really enjoyed making new friends and sharing stories, and hope we can stay in touch. Congratulations to the new RPTs!! Very well done. I'm already looking forward to next year...!

The Shigeru Kawai WAS superb! You only had to think which voice you wanted to bring out and it happened!
