5 inches or 14 years?

The age of the piano is not as important as some of the improvements that have probably been made in that time period.

A longer piano is usually nicer, but 5'8" really is a nice home size piano.

I would ask the Kawai guys to chime in on the all the improvements that have occurred since '84.

Hi Cozmick,

Welcome to the forum, smile

Kawai GS-30, Grand Supreme 6'1" a step above Kawai's KG-3.
Yamaha G2, Standard grand 5'7" forerunner of the 5'8" C2.

Where did you find these pianos?
Dealer? ebay? private? craigslist?
Do you have the serial numbers? {Very Important}
Who rated them as being in good condition?
Who graded them A+ A A- etc.?
Are these "Grey Market/Wet Market" used pianos?
Have you seen them or played them?
Did you hire an independent qualified piano tech.,
{RPT/PTG} to go with you to check them out and evaluate them for you?

We can probably help you out better if we have some answers to these questions. Especially the serial number.

Cordially,

Bear

As a novice my ability to compare is limited. But the Yamaha seems noticeably brighter than the Kawai which doesn’t influence my opinion terribly. I assume that the size difference is discernable in the bass, but haven’t been around either piano enough to form a strong opinion of one over the other.

I’m equally interested in opinions on the quality of the pianos. Is the build quality of a 24 year old Kawai GS30 significantly different than that of a 20 year old Yamaha G2?

I’m happy to answer the following. But I’m interested in high level advice on the pianos and I have the help of a ptg pt. who admits to having a brand biase (I'll leave it for you to guess).

Where did you find these pianos? – Kawai = Local Dealer (took as a trade) Yamaha = Private Owner

Do you have the serial numbers? Yes on both. They match years indicated.

Who rated them as being in good condition? Dealer (is PTG) rated Kawai Yamaha is my estimated from first visit (w/o tech).

Who graded them A+ A A- etc.? Same as above
Are these "Grey Market/Wet Market" used pianos? No.

Have you seen them or played them? Yes.
Did you hire an independent qualified piano tech., Have one (he hasn’t seen them YET).

{RPT/PTG} to go with you to check them out and evaluate them for you? (You can only ask this question so many different ways before it becomes redundant)

Thanks in advance..

Yamaha stopped building the G2 around '92 or '93. The items you are considering sound like they are used pianos imported from Japan, based on the description you posted.

Proceed with caution.

Thanks I went back and checked. I had the date wrong on the Yam, its a 1988 which makes the age difference less of an issue. So my question is more to the difference in quality between the two models.

As for the pianos origin, did Yamaha & Kawai import these pianos from somewhere other than Japan at one time?

As Jeff mentioned the G2 was discontinued in the early nineties so......hopefully it is a 10 year old 5'8" C2 the successor of the G2.If not it is older.
The GS30 is a great piano at 6'1" though at 24 years old it can possibly show tell tale signs of a humid environment off the coast of.....Japan

Because of the age, and without knowing the kind of use & wear these pianos have had, it's impossible to give you any real advice here on these pianos. It's up to the musician who plays it. Furthermore, only a qualified tech inspecting these instruments can give you a fair idea of what kind of shape they are in, what service to expect in the future, distant or not so distant.

Kawai GS30s I have come across have varied greatly one to the next. Some nice, some not so nice.

Same thing with the G2.

Both pianos are from the Hamamatsu factory.
