Well my Kawai ES110 with the F350 foot pedals are a measly 3.5 to 4 inches from keys.

I will have to remove the foot pedal and use the sustain only, because this is unbearable. I'm quite literally on top of it - even tried pressing it down with my big toe lol

I very much prefer the "slab" or "stage" type digitals. The pedals are on the end of a wire, you can put them pretty much anywhere you could reasonably want to. In some cases, it helps to mount them to a board that you put your heel on, so they don't slide around.

For my wife's sewing machine I cut a piece of an old rubber door mat down to about the size of the pedal so it just fits under it with about a quarter inch of overhang. That holds so securely that you'd think the pedal was glued to the floor if you try to push it around, but you can just pick it up like there's nothing holding it at all.
