How does iGrand work with Bluetooth capabilities on keyboards?

I've paired up my ipad with my Kawai ES110, but I'm not sure what to do next. I don't believe I need a MIDI since my keyboard has bluetooth MIDI technology. Or do I need to buy a separate Bluetooth midi ?

Not sure I understand the question. I use iGrand via Bluetooth on my iPad. Once you've paired up with your digital, go to iGrand settings, set the midi channel, set midi controller to On, away you go. I get via slight latency, noticeable at first but the brain soon makes it go away.

I guess I just need to turn on MIDI controller and MIDI channel.

My question was basically why isn't my piano playing the iGrand sounds.

Once the iPad and piano paired via Bluetooth, I thought it was as simple as opening the iGrand app, selecting the piano sound I want, and playing.

Those are turned on and it still won't work.

I called kawai and they said these apps should have a Bluetooth setting to allow you to pair up with ES110.

But I don't think iGrand has that. Hmmmm

It's hard to get answers on this.

Try using the Korg Bluetooth MIDI Connect app (aka BLE-MIDI app). It's a one trick pony the enables global MIDI in iOS for all apps.

Not every MIDI app has an option to accept MIDI over bluetooth. But you might be able to use an app like iMidiPatchbay to take bluetooth MIDI and route it to other MIDI apps that wouldn't necessarily respond to BT directly. (Or you can just use a regular MIDI interface instead of BT.)

Does the ES110 support midi over Bluetooth?

If it does try using the midimittr app to connect.

Ok - I used the app you recommended, and the iGrand is now communicating with the piano.

However, when I play a note on my piano, the iGrand sound (Yamaha grand with violins) comes out of my phone as oppose to the piano.

I was told that the Kawai ES110 doesn't have the input capabilities - it only sends data out. I was shocked to hear that. I used to have a Roland FP4 that let me use iGrand, and it was in a similar price range.

Even on the FP4, you'd have to run a separate audio cable out of the phone and into the piano's aux inputs. But yeah, the ES110 does not have those jacks. The ES110 is better than the FP4 in some ways (piano sound, travel weight, possibly action), not as good in others (connectivity, speaker volume, range of additional sounds, operational ergonomics). Though IIRC, the FP4 typically healthily topped $1k. The "current version" of the FP4 is the FP50 at $1299.

Kawai isn't alone in not offering audio inputs on their entry level board... you similarly won't find them on the Yamaha P45/P115, Casio PX160, Roland FP30.

(As an aside, I don't think anything has real-time bluetooth audio, audio over bluetooth tends to have too much latency. There are a handful of workstation-style boards that can take audio in over USB, though I don't think I've seen that in any models with speakers.)

Thanks Scott for clearing that up.

Guess if I wanted I could plug my iPhone or iPad into speakers and use iGrand that way.
