Hold your hand up in front of you, with the back of your hand facing you with your fingers facing up and closed - no spaces between them. Are they all straight? Do they all go in the same direction?

My 1 and 2 fingers curve to the right and my 4 and 5 to the left (reverse for my left hand).

Should I get this checked out or ignore it?

mine are straight! i don't think it matters though if yours are not, as long as you could play everything normally.

#2 bends a bit to the right, #4 bends a bit to the left, the rest are about as straight as I think they can be. Never noticed that before.

I would recommend obsessing about it.

He was most likely demonstrating the humorous social tool of sarcasm.

My fingers are curved that way a lot. It never really bothered me though. As long as they work! smile

Everybody's a little different. Don't worry about it - there are as many hand shapes as pianists.

#1 on the right curves to the right and #1 on the left curves to the left.

My pinkys both look like crooked twigs! Who cares, I can play! thumb

My sister freaked out the other day when she took a look at my left hand, coz the index finger also turns (not just slightly) to the left, so she thought it might've been broken when I was younger.

But I absolutely agree with Kreisler: there ARE as many hand shapes as pianists.

There's a lot of other weird things also about my hand - but would only share if someone was geniunely interested!

The middle finger of my left hand is bent to the left while the middle finger of my right hand is bent to the right. I have always assumed that it was caused by years of reaching for far-off notes. I wouldn't want it 'fixed' as it seems to be a desireable adaptation.

Mine are the same, and my index fingers, not only do they curve toward middle, but they are so crooked, that the nail actually touches the middle finger, if that makes sense and because they are super skinny, my middle joints look super fat and my fingers super skinny, like a gaunt face, I have gaunt fingers. I worry too. But everyone reassures, that is just me.

On both of my hands, 3 and 5 are quite straight, 2 and 4 curve inward toward 3, with 2 being the most curved of all. The last joint on R3 is enlarged, from having caught a baseball on its tip when I was very young.

These, though, aren't the most important considerations with hands and fingers. The important things are, as far as I can see:

1. How far can you span with 1 and 5 with sufficient comfort to use on the piano?

2. Which fingers can you fit between black keys to play the narrow part of a white key?

These considerations are why you should always look on the finger numbering in sheet music as a suggestion and a starting point, and work out your own fingerings for the places that you find difficult.
